ADVERTISING INFORMATION Palau - Culture A spectacular 400 mile long strand of pearls laid across blue sea best describes this jewel of the Pacific. Made of limestone coral reefs lifted above sea level and undercut by ocean currents which over time, have notched the bases so that from the air they look like giant green mushrooms, the Republic of Palau is truly nature at her most majestic. Koror, the capital, has breathtaking views of the islands, Japanese stone lanterns and the only Shinto Shrine outside Japan, a reminder of Japanese occupation during the war. There is a National Museum founded in 1955 which displays a bounty of island treasure and on special occasions you can see young Palauan women dressed in grass skirts, covered in coconut oil and turmeric perform ancient native dances on the museum's grass. From Koror you can take a tour boat to one of the many islands for an all day picnic, take up the new sport of kayaking round the Rock Islands, snorkelling on the way, or go swimming, scuba diving and shelling out at the reef. If you prefer fishing, cast a line from the beach or a dinghy and catch a swag of tropical fish. A village tour of Babeldaob is where you can see some of the impressive historic and cultural sites such as stone walkways and hedges of immense sizes, plus the Palauan equivalent of the Biblical Lot story - an ancient statue of a mother and child who were turned to stone when the mother peeked inside a village men's house, found in Koror.

Identification. The name Palau may be derived from the Palauan word for village, beluu (Pelew). Some trace the name to the Spanish word for mast, palao. Location and Geography. The capital and major population center is Koror, the small set of islands to the south of the main island of Babelthuap. In 2004 the capital will be relocated to Melekeok on Babelthuap. Demography. As of 1995 the resident population of Palau was 17,225. It was 71 percent urban. The demography of Palau must be understood in historical perspective. Estimated at fifty thousand prior to European contact, the number dropped to about thirty-seven hundred people by 1900. The population then began a slow growth that finally accelerated from 1945 through the 1960s. Fertility has stabilized at 2.1 children per woman, with a death rate of 7.4 per thousand. In the late twentieth century, the natural population growth has been counterbalanced by outmigration. While the number of Palauans has been relatively stable at about thirteen thousand, including the peoples of Hatohobei and Sonsorol, an estimated seven thousand Palauans today reside overseas for a total population of around twenty thousand.

CULTURE Palau's social organization is highly complex and competitive. The race for money, prestige and power, the main thrust of which used to be for political power within a clan or village, was the focus from which most events occurred, such as sports competitions and wars. Palauan villages were, and still are, organized around 10 clans reckoned matrilineally. A council of chiefs from the 10 ranking clans governed the village, and a parallel council of their female counterparts held a significant advisory role in the control and division of land and money. Men and women had strictly defined roles to play in the continuity of the village. The sea was the domain of men who braved its fury to harvest the fish necessary to sustain the village and wage battle. Inter-village wars were common, so men spent a lot of time in the men's meeting houses mastering techniques of canoe building and refining their skills with weapons. Women, on the other hand, held sway in the home. They cultivated vegetables and harvested shellfish and sea cucumbers from the shallow reefs. Until the late 1800s Palauans were tattooed, with more ornate designs on women of high clan. Men wore their hair in tight buns and rubak, the important chiefs, wore bracelets made from the vertebrae of dugongs.

Although in the past few decades, Palau has adapted to an international economy, Palauans for the most part strongly identify with their traditional culture. Several of the traditional ceremonies, such as the omersurch birth ceremony, ocheraol first-house ceremony and the kemeldiil funeral services are widely practiced and the codes and beliefs adopted by Palauan forefathers are still revered today.
Probably the most noticeable aspect of Palauan culture is the people's connection with the sea. Traditionally, it was the duty of the family to go to sea to harvest fish and battle against enemy villages. As the sea was the source of their livelihood, men developed a close relationship with the waters of Palau, becoming versant in the currents and the phases of the moon and the behavior of the fish they sought to put on the table.
Women generally stayed on land or along the shallow reefs surrounding the islands, rather than combat the open ocean, providing foundation for the family. Their days were largely spent tending to their homes, family and fields where they grew taro.

Micronesian chief wins plea bargain over hitting lawyer with baseball bat
Monday, 28-Jul-2003 3:32AM PDT Story from AFP / Scott Radway
KOROR, Palau, July 28 (AFP) - Palau's most powerful traditional leader Monday accepted a plea bargain for the offence of striking an American attorney with a baseball bat. The surprising turnabout ends months of volatile debate over whether the paramount chief of Koror, Yutaka Gibbons, should be tried for his actions in a western court of law. According to the spokesman for Gibbons, the paramount chief wanted to avoid further division and conflict in a young republic struggling to balance the preservation its traditions with westernization. Under the plea agreement, the severe charge of aggravated assault was dropped but Gibbons could face up to five years in prison for the charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. "There is a realization that supporting an atmosphere of peace and harmony in the community outweighs all other options," said his spokesman Alan Seid, following a court hearing where the plea agreement was accepted.

Thousands of years ago, people from neighboring islands, particularly from nearby Indonesia and Southeast Asia, traveled farther out into the Pacific and found this gem of an island. Researchers confirm that the travelers were skilled in navigating and gradually settled as they found comfort on its shores and thrived to build a community that we know today. Since Palau is divided by the northern and southern parts, it was inevitable for a case of power struggle between the two factions. Historically, this rivalry or competition among individuals, villages, clans, and states still continue till this very day. Politics then became an essential aspect within the Palauan society with inter-village warfare undertaken by the men upon realizing that they have more time to dwell on such matters since they were no longer tied to farming. The women, on the other hand, for having provided adequate food supply for an entire year gained social status in high society and became important in the political scene within the island. While the men began constructing public buildings and other infrastructure, such as canoe houses, the women became expert weavers: weaving intricate blankets, baskets, and the sails needed for canoes. Hence, art began to flourish. The men then became craftsmen, carving items from wood
