palau culture
"Alii!", this is the greeting for "Welcome", "Hello" in Palau, kind of like "Aloha" in Hawaiian.
Palau, also known as Belau (in Palau language) is located near the Philippines. The Spanish, German and then the Japanese occupied this area at various times during Palau's history. Most of the history before these occupations is unknown.
Many people can speak Japanese and there are some remnants of Japanese life as well as remnants of war in Palau.
There was a baseball field in the middle of town called Asahi Field. Loved it, it has lots of grass in the outfield too.
Some entrances still have Japanese mon (gates). Many people have Japanese sounding last names, like someone's name was Kimurasan (-san is the polite way to address someone, Japanese-y but not really Japanese), even our taxi driver's last name was Japanese, though he was 100% Palauan.
The taxi driver said his parents spoke Japanese when he was growing up and they also attended a Japanese school in the mountains (run by Japanese temples), so he could converse pretty fluently.
I think our guide said that there are about 600 Japanese words that the people of Palau use in their everyday language!

This is a state of creating awareness that alcoholism is bad for you, you family and most of all your community. I haven’t heard a drunker become the champion of others except for him/herself. What if you were caught in a candid camera or in reality TV show; I’m sure you might feel ashamed of what you done “yesterday”? I don’t foresee you or anybody would look “beautiful”…. If you think “old drinking culture” brings goodness to you and/or your family or community then drink for your success, glory and achievement! What causes the raging hangover you get the very next day? And why is it a bad idea to mix alcohol with other drugs? Alcohol can also interact with a wide variety of herbal supplements, so avoid these while drinking, especially Echinacea, chamomile and valerian, which cause serious drowsiness and/or sedation when combined with drink. “ Enti ka panjai umor badu ngirup; Enti ka padam seput jampat agi anang nagang diri ngirup…”

Palau came into contact with Spanish explorers in 1710. Spain's influence over the region was later challenged by Germany, which eventually purchased the Caroline islands from Spain in 1899. At the start of World War I Japan took over administration of the islands, expanding infrastructure, copra and phosphate production initiated by the Germans. The United States took over after World War II and Palau became part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) administered by the US. The Spanish, German, Japanese and American periods all marked a transformation of social and political practices and particularly roles and relationships based on age and gender. Queen of Palau:
Palau is traditionally a matrilineal society in which land, rights, obligations and descent are traced through the women in a community. Proper posture and movement is crucial and much preparation goes into creating the elaborate and colorful costumes. Palau is traditionally a matrilineal society in which land, rights, obligations and descent are traced through the women in a community. Women's groups established the social networks, enhanced prestige of kin groups and took part in public decision-making. In many Micronesian islands, however, men still retained public power and carried important leadership titles. In Palau, however, senior women in a chiefly clan would select the male paramount chief. According to Palauan activist Isabella Sumang, "In our Palau culture, it is women who have the responsibility for preserving the land for generations still to come." There are two paramount chiefdoms based on matrilineal descent but today there is mixture of this matrilineal power with modern patriarchy especially in the arenas of Christianity, economic and political leadership. Nevertheless women's interest groups in Palau are strong and actively participate in the economic, social and political landscape of the islands.

    PALAU
Paradise on Earth Today Was the Site of a Major WWII Battle By Liz Goldner The island chain is often described as a spectacular 400 mile long strand of pearls laid across blue sea. The chain is made of limestone coral reefs lifted above sea level and undercut by ocean currents. Three ocean currents converge on Palau, bringing with them marine life four times as rich as that in the Caribbean. There are more than 1,000 species of fish and more than 700 species of coral. Giant clams sit on the reefs and moray eels hover nearby as do sharks who appear to be too well fed to be interested in you. The tightly clustered Palau archipelago consists of the high islands of Babeldaob, Koror, Peleliu and Angaur in the south, the low coral atolls of Kayangel to the north east and Ngeruangel and the limestone rock islands.. Apart from Kayangel, Ngeruangel and Angaur all the islands are inside a single barrier reef. Only eight islands are inhabited, and the entire population is 17,235 with the majority living in the provisional capital of Koror. There are an additional 2,500 foreigners. mostly Filipino laborers.

Palau villages were traditionally organized around matrilineal clans. Men and women had strictly defined roles. A council of chiefs governed the villages, while a parallel council of women held an advisory role in the control of land, money, and the selection of chiefs.
While women were caretakers of their homes and families, they also carried the responsibily of educating their children about Palauan traditions and culture, ensuring the continuity of the village or clan. They also cultivated taro fields and harvested shellfish from the shallow reef.
The sea was the domain of men, who braved its fury to harvest the fish necessary to sustain the village and wage battle. Inter-village wars were common so men spent a lot of time in the men's meeting halls, mastering techniques of canoe-building and refining their weaponry skills.
As the sea was the source of their livelihood, men developed a close relationship with the waters of Palau, becoming versant in the currents and the phases of the moon and the behavior of the fish they sought to put on the table.
Palauans for the most part strongly identify with their traditional culture. Several of the traditional ceremonies, such as the omersurch birth ceremony, ocheraol first-house ceremony and the kemeldiil funeral services are widely practiced and the codes and beliefs adopted by Palauan forefathers are still revered today.
