The evolutionary history of species has been described as a " tree ", with many branches arising from a single trunk. While Haeckel's tree is somewhat outdated, it illustrates clearly the principles that more complex modern reconstructions can obscure. The timeline of human evolution outlines the major events in the development of human species , and the evolution of humans' ancestors . It includes a brief explanation of some animals species or genera , which are possible ancestors of Homo sapiens sapiens . It does not address the origin of life , which is addressed by abiogenesis , but presents a possible line of descendants that led to humans. This timeline is based on studies from paleontology developmental biology morphology and from anatomical and genetic data. The study of human evolution is a major component of

The subject is primarily contentious in the United States. However, it is also important in other countries where creationists advocate the teaching of creationism as a valid alternative to evolution , or portray the modern evolutionary synthesis as an inadequate scientific paradigm Although in the scientific community there is essentially universal agreement that the evidence of evolution is overwhelming, and the

But the theory replaces God with an even more incredible deity: omnipotent chance." (_Unfinished Animal_, p101)

evolution force in evolution. Subsequently (1858), Alfred Russel WALLACE and Charles DARWIN independently set forth a scientifically credible theory of evolution based on NATURAL SELECTION, focusing on the survival and reproduction of those species best adapted to the environment. This theory had a profound effect on scientific thought and experimentation. Although it has undergone modification in light of later scientific developments, the theory of evolution still rests on essentially the same grounds emphasized by Darwin, supported now by research in GENETICS as well as by comparative anatomy, embryology, geography, paleontology, and biochemistry. It has been challenged by those believing in the creation theory of the universe.
