    Education Resources for Paleontology
USGS Links Non-USGS Links There are an ever growing number of resources available from the USGS and elsewhere for teachers, students, scientists, and others who are interested in paleontology and related earth and biological science disciplines.
    USGS Resources
    General Information and Teaching Sources
    • From USGS:
      • Information on Fossils and Fossil Collecting Selected References on Fossils and Paleontology The Learning Web is a portion of the USGS web dedicated to K-12 education, exploration, and life-long learning.
        • Global Change . As part of the larger study of Global Change, activities are presented to assist in teaching concepts such as geologic time and how fossils are made. The USGS Ask-A-Geologist system can be used to ask USGS scientists specific questions about all aspects of geology, including paleontology.
        General Interest Publications
General interest publications are prepared by the USGS to provide information about the earth sciences, natural resources, and the environment. Publications dealing with paleontology, historical geology, and geologic time include: Dinosaurs: Facts and Fiction . Ronald J. Litwin, Robert E. Weems, and Thomas R. Holtz, Jr., 1995. Answers to some frequently asked questions about dinosaurs, with current ideas and evidence to correct some long-lived popular misconceptions.

    Taphonomy: The Study of Preservation
This page was written by Ewan Wolff , Montana State University Geoscience Education Web Development Team "The fossil skeletons that we found were not articulated, which means that the bones had come apart at some point before the fossilization process began. Otherwise, we would have found neatly arranged skeletons instead of jumbles of bones. Furthermore, there were no marks or breaks showing that the bones had been cracked or chewed by predators prior to fossilization. These bits of evidence led me to think that after their deaths the babies must have lain rotting in the nest, slowly being denuded of flesh, and then, in the second stage of decay, their skeletons must have come apart as the connecting tendons and ligaments disintegrated."
