Advances in Paleontology
This page was written by Ewan Wolff , Montana State University Geoscience Education Web Development Team "What does paleontology really matter anyway? For one thing, the fossil record can be a powerful mirror reflecting back to us our evolutionary future. There are sobering lessons to learn from the past. The possibility of mass extinction, of the sudden, rampant destruction of large hunks of the biota, and the implications of this for the fickle quality of life such as we know it would not be readily evident without paleontologists and their fossil record." Michael Novacek Time Traveller (p.320) Show caption Hide Chalk from the Yaverland Beach Locality, Sandown, Isle of Wight. Image courtesy E. Wolff, 2001. Details Topics such as preservation, biomolecules, and tracks and traces have consistently been the subjects of scientific and public interest. Papers on these topics have dominated paleontological conferences and publications in contemporary times. This module explores these topics and helps students learn about the research and researchers working in the field of paleontology.

Interested in life and earth sciences? Wonder what kinds of questions paleontologists are tackling today and how these questions help us understand issues affecting our species and the world? Want to find out what goes on behind the doors of UCMP? There are several ways to become informed and involved, both in person and via the Internet. Here's a sampling:
Friends of UCMP
Perhaps you visit the UCMP website often, or you enjoy UCMP events and exhibits in Berkeley. If you believe that UCMP's collections, research, and educational activities are important, consider becoming a Friend of UCMP . Help support research, education, and public outreach at the largest, most interactive university paleontology program in the nation.
Annual Open House
Every April, UCMP opens its doors to visitors during Cal Day, UC Berkeley's annual open house. UCMP's Cal Day events vary from year to year, but usually include tours, lectures, demonstrations and a reception. Check the listing of upcoming special events in the spring for dates and more information. If you're interested in finding out more about Cal Day events all over the UC Berkeley campus, take a look at the official

    NPS Paleontology Program
is a celebration organized by the National Park Service and the American Geological Institute to promote public awareness and stewardship of fossils! Learn more More than 230 National Park Service areas are known to contain fossils either in the rocks of the park, in the park's museum collections, or in cultural contexts (such as petrified wood projectile points). Only 14 of these parks were established specifically to preserve fossils. Fossils from parks collectively span every period of geologic history from stromatolites one billion years old at Glacier National Park to Ice Age fossils in various Alaskan parks thousands of years old. Many are truly unique, rare, type, or nationally and even globally significant specimens and assemblages. Skip to Content Skip to navigation U.S. Department of the Interior
