ICE AGE PALEONTOLOGY
OF SOUTHEAST ALASKA
Timothy H. Heaton
University of South Dakota
Southeast Alaska is a spectacular region of glacier-cut fjords and islands covered with dense rainforest. Its primary industries are tourism, fishing, and logging. There are few roads through the region, and travel is primarily by boat and float plane. It is also the home to Tlingit and Haida native groups, famous for their totems and their marine and forest adaptations. Limestone areas of Southeast Alaska have developed an impressive karst topography containing many caves. In the late 1980s the Tongass Cave Project (a joint venture of the National Speleological Society and Tongass National Forest) was created to locate, explore, and survey these caves. Caving expeditions have been conducted every summer since that time. In 1990 the first vertebrate fossils were found, and a major research effort began to explore this new scientific resource. Large-scale paleontological and archaeological excavations have been conducted on northern Prince of Wales Island, and the research is now expanding to other islands and coastal mainland areas of Southeast Alaska. The goal of this research is to establish a complete chronology of mammals, birds, and fish living in the region before, during, and following the Last Glacial Maximum, and up to the present day. This work is helping to establish the timing and extent of glaciation, the presence of Ice Age coastal refugia for land mammals, and the possibility that humans first entered North America by this coastal route.

Abstract

Disappearance of the Ediacaran Assemblage
Abstract
This page describes the stratigraphy and fossil record of the Ediacaran (f/k/a Vendian) Period, including a brief introduction to the Ediacaran fauna. Some famous Ediacaran lagerstätten are briefly discussed, followed by a sketched outline of some of the major evolutionary events. Keywords: Ediacaran, Vendian biota, fossil record, evolution, Varangian, Varanger-Marinoan, snowball earth, Ediacaran, Metazoan radiation
Introduction
The Ediacaran Period and System were first proposed by Sokolov 1952 , from drill core sequences on the Siberian Platform. . Although the Ediacaran was not embraced quickly, it is now recognised by the Subcommission on Precambrian Stratigraphy and has now come into almost universal usage although frequently still called the Vendian. As with the better-known Cambrian Period , the absolute age constraints on the Ediacaran interval have ebbed and flowed over the past few years; the best current best guess is from 630 to 542 million years (Ma) ago.

    57. The Solnhofen Limestone Of Germany
Introductory information from the University of California Museum of Paleontology.
    http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/mesozoic/jurassic/solnhofen.html
    Localities of the Jurassic:
    The Solnhofen Limestone of Germany
Towards the end of the Jurassic , about 155 milion years ago, a warm shallow sea studded with islands covered much of what is now Germany. Sponges and corals grew on rises in this sea, forming reefs that divided up parts of this sea into isolated lagoons. These lagoons were cut off from the ocean and also from terrestrial runoff. Within these warm, isolated lagoons, the salinity rose, and the water may have been anoxic (depleted of oxygen) or even toxic at various intervals. Aside from cyanobacteria and small protists such as foraminifera , nothing could survive in the bottom waters of the lagoons for very long. However, any organism that fell into the lagoons from the land, or that drifted or was washed into the lagoons from the ocean, was buried in soft carbonate muds. Thus, many delicate creatures were not consumed by scavengers or torn apart by currents. Today, in the state of Bavaria, in region between Nuremberg and Munich, these carbonate muds form a type of fine-grained, flat-cleaving limestone (known as Plattenkalk in German) that has been quarried since the Stone Age for roof and floor tiles, and more recently for lithography. These rocks known as the Solnhofen or Solenhofen Limestone, after the small town of Solnhofen are also famous for their fossils. Although relatively rare, fossils from the Solnhofen Limestone may show exquisite detail, and often include fragile or soft-bodied organisms that usually leave no fossils at all, or only fragmentary ones.

The course prerequisites include the following classes in geology: GEO 307 Sedimentary Petrology and GEO 211 Historical Geology or consent of instructor. The course covers a variety of topics including field mapping, facies analysis, invertebrate and vertebrate fossils identification, microsite screening, taphonomy, and excavation techniques. In past years, the course has been taught in the extensive outcrops of the Hell Creek Formation of eastern Montana and the Jurassic and Cretaceous formations of Utah and Nevada. Extensive hiking and outdoor physical challenges require that students be physically fit. A fee for transportation, camping fees, meals, and materials is required (see fees below).
