A Collection of Paleontology Resources
Georges Cuvier, a French zoologist, was one of the first to establish the field of paleontology when he compared living things to fossils he had discovered. He established the theory of extinction, when he used comparative anatomy to examine the fossils of two elephants of different species with yet a third species that, indeed, no longer existed, which he named the mammoth. He conceded that this species must be extinct as it no longer was present on the planet. He then discovered yet a third elephant in the Ohio area that differed from the other three that he named the mastodon, which also must be extinct. Thus came the birth of paleontology and the importance of the examination of fossils was realized. Various types of fossils are excavated and examined by paleontologists. Vertebrate paleontologists study vertebrate fossils, from mammals to fish and birds. Ichnologists study fossils of footprints and tracks. Paleoecology is the study of the climate in the past, as evidenced in fossils. Invertebrate paleontologists study mollusks, worms, and other invertebrate animals, and palynologists study living and fossil spores and pollen. Each of these is necessary to determine the variables of each time period; and the variables and study of the variables is important because what has happened in the past can give scientists a glimpse into what is happening now and what could happen in the future.

Oligocene, ~30 million years old. Burke Paleontology Paleontology is the study of past life forms, based on plant and animal fossils and their geological contexts. Paleontologists use fossil remains to trace the evolutionary history of extinct and living organisms and to study past climates. The Burke Museum's paleontological collections contain more than 3 million specimens of fossil invertebrates, vertebrates, plants, single-celled protists, trace fossils, and modern mollusks. A portion of these collections is on display in the museum galleries. Update on Collections:
The Burke Museum and the Dean's Office of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington recently commissioned a report on the Burke Museum's vertebrate paleontological collections and have now received it. ( PDF of report Explore Paleobiology at UW

All aspects of the earth sciences are encouraged, however, including geology, paleoarcheology and occasionally space sciences. Meetings are held at 7:00 on the first Monday of the month in Ricketson Auditorium at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Members can participate in field trips and and digs; and receive the newsletter, "Trilobite Tales". Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) - Dedicated to vertebrate paleontology and organized exclusively foreducational and scientific purposes. The Paleontological Society - Nonprofit organization devoted exclusively to the advancement of the science of paleontology. Publisher of the Journal of Paleontology Geological Society of America (GSA) - Advancing the geosciences, enhancing the professional growth of its members, and promoting the geosciences in the service to humankind and stewardship of the Earth. 19 Days ITINERARY MAP There is a big advantage to viewing the many dinosaurs located within The Real America compared to those in "Jurassic Park." Our dinosaurs are dead and have been for 65 million years. Long before paleontology became popular, sites within our region were famous worldwide for the extremely rich fossil beds and accessible dinosaur skeletons. New and exciting finds are still being made every year, including the first-ever discovery of dinosaur eggs in Montana and the first full-sized Allosaurus in Wyoming. The region was, and is, a true "Jurassic Park." Days 1/2 - Arrive Denver
One of the most extensive dinosaur exhibits in the nation is at Denver Museum of Natural History. Called "Prehistoric Journey," the $7.7 million exhibit will offer visitors a unique look at prehistoric life, following a cobblestone path and entering an "enviroroama" where they’ll be immersed in a 3.5 billion year old landscape. Overnight Denver.
