RESOURCES FOR CHAPTER ONE
"Catching the Drift"
Introduction to the Social System of Roman Palestine
    Chapter Summary
It has long been obvious that the modern reader stands at a distance from the text of the New Testament in terms of history, geography, language, and literature. But this volume addresses a different set of gaps between the New Testament and the modern reader: those due to differences of culture and social system. Most of us have never encountered some of the most common first-century Palestinian social institutions, such as patronage/clientage. First-century social institutions were configured and related in ways different from our own, such as religion as embedded in kinship or politics. Our orientation to values is different from their emphasis on honor and shame. And the U.S. emphasizes the individual over the group, unlike the ancients in Galilee and Judea.
Bridging the cultural gap calls for using more adequate cultural scenarios. This means that we need to draw on social-scientific studies regarding Mediterranean and peasant studies. And these studies need to be set within context of the study of Palestinian history and archaeology, especially the study of first-century Galilee. The closer the analogies to ancient Palestine in terms of time and space, the fewer cultural hurdles one needs to account for. But our basic premise is that drawing analogies from the Mediterranean world will provide better starting-points than our own experiences in the modern Western world. A comparative approach, however, is not only helpful, but vital.

O RIENTATION
Identification. Palestine is the name the Romans gave in the second century C.E. to a region of the present-day Middle East situated on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea west of Jordan. The name is derived from the Greek Palaestina, B.C.E. Also known as the Holy Land, Palestine is held sacred by Christians, Jews, and Muslims, some of the most important events in each religion having taken place there, especially in the city of Jerusalem. Location and Geography. The Gaza Strip is a narrow sliver of land about eighteen miles long (twenty-nine kilometers)and five miles wide (eight kilometers) on the Mediterranean Sea between Egypt and Israel. It is mostly flat and sandy, with little fertile soil. The West Bank is about ninety miles long (one-hundred-forty-five kilometers) and thirty miles wide (forty-eight kilometers) and is surrounded on all sides by Israel except to the east, where it abuts the Jordan River and the Dead Sea. The West Bank is fertile in the north and mostly barren in the south. Demography.

Among one of the most important changes the Palestinian social structure encountered, was the recognition of the role of the Palestinian woman., Palestinian women presented progressive achievements and sacrifices which firmly established their place in society and status -amongst other social issues- in the struggle against Zionism and occupation. This has considerably challenged ways of thinking which traditionally refused their rights to express their national and social identity. The changing role of women is determined by their participation in resistance and political life, and increased education and employment. Besides the political struggle, women's role in the social movement is of major importance, reflected in the huge amount of women's organizations dealing with all aspects of life. They make up a considerable part of Palestinian civil society. In August 1994, Palestinian women held a conference and released a draft document to be included in the Palestinian constitution (whenever it gets implemented) guaranteeing political, social, economic and cultural rights for women based on the principle of ideological and individual pluralism and of the respect for the individual and social freedom. The Palestinian Declaration of Independence (1988) had already outlined that "Governance will be based on principles of social justice, equality and non-discrimination in public rights of men or women..."

Not only the Jews, but the Slavic races, were considered inferior, less than human, and regarded as populations that could be transferred to make room for Aryans. Though crushed by German armor and military power in hand-to-hand and street-to-street fighting, the Jewish resistance in Warsaw stands as a symbol of the right of an oppressed people to resist occupation, collective punishment, genocide and ethnocide. ... Gaza too is a ghetto. One and a half million Palestinians, most of them refugees dispossessed of the lands and homes that were theirs for centuries, inhabit the most densely populated square miles of the Middle East, if not the world. They are hemmed in by security walls and barbed wire fences, unable to move in or out without the permission of Israel, the occupying power. They have lived in a permanent state of siege, unable to conduct free trade with the rest of the world, virtually unable to visit the West Bank, unable even to fish in the sea off their coasts, subject to perpetual surveillance and control by land, sea and air. Their hospitals lack even the most essential medicines. Power and water are controlled by the Israeli government. All goods that enter or leave this virtual prison camp do so by permission of the occupying power. It is a war whose crimes, once again, include the indiscriminate slaughter of civilians, including infants and children, attacks on non-military institutions including mosques, a university and a television station, and the deliberate planning of an assault whose proclaimed ends far exceed the suppression of the purported
