Palestine throughout History Palestine was not a land without people during the last century; In fact it has been continuously occupied since beginning of humanity! Refer: www.palestinehistory.com 3'RD MILLENNIUM BC 3'rd millennium BC : The Canaanites were the earliest known inhabitants of Palestine. They became urbanized and lived in city-states, one of which was Jericho . 2'ND MILLENNIUM BC 2'rd millennium BC : Egyptian hegemony and Canaanite autonomy were constantly challenged by such ethnically diverse invaders as the Amorites, Hittites, and Hurrians. These invaders, however, were defeated by the Egyptians and absorbed by the Canaanites, who at that time may have numbered about 200000.
14th century BC : Egyptian power began to weaken, new invaders appeared: the Hebrews, a group of Semitic tribes from Mesopotamia, and the Philistines. 1230 BC : Joshua conquered parts of Palestine. The conquerors settled in the hill country, but they were unable to conquer all of Palestine. 1125 BC : The Israelites, a confederation of Hebrew tribes, finally defeated the Canaanites but found the struggle with the Philistines more difficult . Philistines had established an independent state on the southern coast of Palestine and controlled the Canaanite town of Jerusalem.

Home Culture History The Peace Process ... Discussion Forum Roman rule, 63 BC - 638 CE In 63 BC, the Romans incorporated Judah into their empire, as the province of Judea, and placed the Jewish lands under kings. The Herodian dynasty, a family of Jews who gained favor with the Romans, was appointed to these kingships. They ruled over Palestine from 40 BC until around 100 AD. The most famous member of this family was Herod the Great, who ruled from 37 to 4 BC. He rebuilt Jerusalem and many fortresses in the land and temples in Gentile territories and promoted Hellenistic culture. But his most notable achievement was the building a temple in Jerusalem, which was begun in 20/19 BC and finished in 63 AD, long after his death. Herod was an ideal medium for the empire. His Jewish ancestry gave him identification both with Jewish culture, and through his close friendships with the Romans, the Romans as well. His rise to power came through many intricately designed connections to the Romans and was spurred on by his desire to be the "king of the Jews." It was during his rule that Jesus of Nazareth was born between 6-4 BC, he would spread his message of monotheism up until around 30 AD. After gathering apostles and supporters in the Galilee whose views often conflicted with the contemporary Jewish religious establishment - Jesus made his way to Jerusalem . As his teachings were judged subversive he was to be put to death. And so it was that the Jews who showed stiff-necked resistance to God's messenger, Jesus, brought about the inevitable doom which followed in the complete destruction of their Temple under Titus in 70 AD.

Palestine History - 20th Century
In European usage up to World War I, "Palestine" was used informally for a region that extended in the north-south direction typically from Rafah to the Litani River . The western boundary was the sea, and the eastern boundary was the poorly-defined place where the Syrian desert began. In various European sources, the eastern boundary was placed anywhere from the Jordan River to slightly east of Amman. The Negev Desert was not included. The British-led Egyptian Expeditionary Force, commanded by Edmund Allenby, captured Jerusalem on 9 December 1917 and occupied the whole of the Levant following the defeat of Turkish forces in Palestine at the Battle of Megiddo in September 1918 and the capitulation of Turkey on 31 October.

Canaan/Palestine/Israel: A Brief Early History in Maps
Current Commentary View RSS feed Introduction This page traces the history of Canaan/Israel/Palestine in maps (click on links to view the maps). From this brief history, we learn that it is a small country that has usually been dominated by outsiders, and that many peoples have lived here and established themselves and staked their claims here. Canaan before the Hebrews - Canaan had been a collection of city-states, tributary to the Egyptian Pharoah, as attested to in the Tel- El Amarna tablets. The breakup of the Egyptian empire beginning about 1500 BCE made possible the invasion of the Hebrews. The map shows the probable location of cities in Canaan about 1200 BCE. Israel in Early Times - According to Hebrew tradition, 12 tribes entered Cana'an from Egypt and conquered it, led by Moses. Historical evidence from the Amarna tables suggests that there were already 'apiru' (probably Hebrews) in Canaanites in the time of Egyptian rule, some possibly with names such as "yakubu-el" (Jacob). The biblical account allots different parts of the land to the twelve tribes as shown in the maps. Soon after, a kingdom was established, first under Saul and then under David. The right-hand map shows the borders of the kingdom of David (about 1000 B.C.E. ) and other nations. The maps are necessarily conjectures based on biblical narrative and supporting archeology.
