Palestine: History
Introduction
Palestine stands alone among the Roman provinces in that here only there existed a national identity strong enough effectively to challenge Roman rule. That identity depended on a body of Hebrew religious writings that constituted a concrete locus for the formation of durable political and religious institutions. This locus and these institutions provided the framework for the two great rebellions that the Romans faced in Palestine in the first and second centuries CE; the messianic promise that the writings contained and misgovernment and Romanizing policy provided the motivations for revolt. Precisely because these rebellions grew out out of the Jewish national identity, the Romans found them far more dangerous than any revolt based on generalized resistance to Romanization, Hellenization, or paganism or on any particular program for a new political and religious orderand many such programs did indeed emerge from this remarkable region. The section on People and Places offers further information on the Jewish people and their religious writings. Here I offer a survey of the history of the region with particular reference to the problem nationalism presented to the Roman rulers, at least until the Romans demolished the institutions (but not the writings and the national identity) in the 130s. Jewish resistance to Roman rule explains why the process of Romanization in Palestine had to involve not only the founding of colonies and other Greco-Roman cities and the co-optation of the local elites but also forced migrationwhat we now call ethnic cleansingand the permanent stationing of an unusually large legionary force. After the 130s Palestine lost much of its unusual and problematic features with respect to its position in the imperial system, and the large legionary force moved elsewhere. Still, the religious identity now of the Samaritans continued to challenge the authority of the government until the end of Late Antiquity.

Palestine History
PRE-BIBLICAL PALESTINE HISTORY Stretching about 150 miles from north to south, and roughly 75 miles from east to west, Palestine is a land of contrast and conflict.
Rugged mountains contrast with flat, fertile valleys. The peak of Mt. Herman (9,232 ft.) contrasts sharply with the Dead Sea, 1,300 feet below sea level (the lowest place on earth). The near impassibility of the desert regions lay in sharp contrast with the ports and harbors of the coastal regions. Palestine history of conflict dates to even before Abram's rescue of Lot. Ancient Palestine has seen blood throughout nearly every age of human existence, dating back to the earliest civilizations of the world. Palestine, or Canaan, or Israel, was described by God in Deuteronomy 8:7-9 "For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills, a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomengranates, a land of olive oil and honey; a land where you shall eat food without scarcity, in which you shall not lack anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper." The land of Palestine, or Canaan, was occupied by Canaanites long before

Northern Israel near the border with Lebanon The name Palestine refers to a region of the eastern Mediterranean coast from the sea to the Jordan valley and from the southern Negev desert to the Galilee lake region in the north. The word itself derives from "Plesheth", a name that appears frequently in the Bible and has come into English as "Philistine". Plesheth, (root palash) was a general term meaning rolling or migratory. This referred to the Philistine's invasion and conquest of the coast from the sea. The Philistines were not Arabs nor even Semites, they were most closely related to the Greeks originating from Asia Minor and Greek localities. They did not speak Arabic. They had no connection, ethnic, linguistic or historical with Arabia or Arabs. The Philistines reached the southern coast of Israel in several waves. One group arrived in the pre-patriarchal period and settled south of Beersheba in Gerar where they came into conflict with Abraham, Isaac and Ishmael. Another group, coming from Crete after being repulsed from an attempted invasion of Egypt by Rameses III in 1194 BCE, seized the southern coastal area, where they founded five settlements (Gaza, Ascalon, Ashdod, Ekron and Gat). In the Persian and Greek periods, foreign settlers - chiefly from the Mediterranean islands - overran the Philistine districts.

Palestine History
Palestine history is a battle scarred history of a parcel of land in West Asia. The land is coveted not only for its historical significance, but also for its strategic location.
The earliest settlers in Palestine history is the Mousterian Neanderthals around 200,000 BC. The Canaanites occupied the region around 1200 BC. They lived during the Bronze Age. The late Canaanite period saw the Palestinian region entering historical texts for the first time. The twelve tribes of Israel finds mention during this time period in history. The first cities began to appear in the history of Palestine around 1000 BC. King Solomon administered the area around 925 BC.
The Greek emperor Alexander the Great conquered the Palestine region around 330 BC. The Greek reign continued for 200 years. The Arab Caliphate came into existence from the Umayyad Period in 630 AD. The Crusaders conquered the Palestinian region on 1099 AD. The Muslim settlement in Palestinian history started during the Mamluk period. The Ottoman period saw the region becoming a part of the Turkish Empire. The Ottoman period lasted until 1917. British rule over Palestine started from 1917. General Allenby conquered the area from the Turks during the Second World War. Palestine is currently an autonomous region.

Until the 1990s, the establishment of a Palestinian state seemed very unlikely. Jordan gives up the West Bank in favour of the Palestinian people. The West Bank had still a strong majority of Palestinians who considered towns and villages in Israel as their true homes. The West Bank was also under boundless Israeli control, which it had been since the occupation of 1967.

    Why is Palestine important?:
It is important to understand, but difficult to convey, just how close everything in this region can be. People are familiar with the names of places like Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Megiddo, and Galilee, but fewer realize just how short the distances between these places can be. Often just a few kilometers separates one from the other, a journey that would have been relatively easy to make on foot for travelers of the ancient world. Related Articles Austin Cline

lebanon warAs Israeli planes pound the Lebanese infrastructure to sunder, as the Palestinians spend their days and nights in inhumane conditions and under siege, as people in 20 Israeli towns sleep in bomb shelters, Israel threatened to widen the conflict by attacking Syria. According to Baztab.com, an Iranian online newspaper [1 ], the Israeli government has given Syria 72 hours to handover the two Israeli soldiers captured by Hezbollah or face the consequences. Iran already has declared that any attack on Syria will be considered an attack on the Muslim world (i.e. Iran and others). If Israel attacks Syria, Iran will enter the fray, which will bring in the US, which will involve Iraq and the Persian Gulf countries. In other words any attack on Syria may start a regional war that may engulf the whole region, sending the price of the crude oil to unimaginable levels. Is it possible that a small border skirmish turn into a regional war? The answer is yes.

Gaza Strip Gaza, (Arabic Ghazze), city and port near the Mediterranean Sea, about 32 km north of the Egyptian border. This ancient city has given its name to the Gaza Strip , a territory that was occupied by Israeli forces from 1967 until 1994. The Gaza Strip covers about 378 sq km (about 146 sq mi) and extends northeast from the Sinai Peninsula along the Mediterranean for about 40 km (about 25 mi).
Gaza was an important city in the 15th century BC , when the Egyptian king Thutmose III made it a base for his army in a war with Syria . In biblical times Gaza was one of the five royal cities of the ancient Philistines .
In the 8th century BC it was conquered by the Assyrians; from the 3rd to the 1st century BC , Egyptian , Syrian , and Hebrew armies fought for its possession . During Roman occupation it was called Minoa .
In the 7th century AD it became a sacred Muslim city, but the Crusaders found it almost deserted in the 12th century . Gaza fell to the French general Napoleon Bonaparte during his Egyptian campaign .
In 1917 , during World War I, the city was taken from Turkey by British forces under General Edmund Henry Hynman Allenby.

Ottoman Sultan Selim captured peacefully Jerusalem on 28 December 1516 from Mamluks, and they possessed the Holy City until 9 December 1917 more than 400 years. Palestine was a peace country during this ages.. Muslims, Jews, Greek Orthodox, Armenian Catholics, Assyrians, Coptics, Russian Orthodox, Protestants, Samaritans and Latins lived in peace together in this holy lands under the Muslim Rule. Ottomans built the Walls and Citadel of Jerusalem and they decorated the Muslim holy Aqsa Mosque and the Qubbat as-Sakhra (Dome of the Rock) with tiles. The Mawlawi and Naqshibandi dervishes from Turkey and Central Asia built their lodges. These are all visible proof that there was a Ottoman Jerusalem.
Famous Turkish world traveller Evliya Çelebi describes this event as follows:
" All the Ulama and pious men went out to meet Selim Shah. They handed him the keys of the Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. He then made presents to all the notable people, exempted them from the onerous taxes and confirmed them Sultan Selim prostrated himself and exclaimed “Alhamdulillah I am the possessor of the first Qiblah ".
