Palindromes A palindrome is a word, phrase, verse, or sentence that reads the same backward or forward. Taking a normal word like "browse" and typing "browse swobr" doesn't count because it doesn't make any sense. It has to be a valid sentence to be a true palindrome. To see if you have a palindrome, run it through my palindrome validator and if it passes, send it in. Naomi, sex at noon taxes. I moan.
Never odd or even.
A man, a plan, a canal, Panama.
Madam, I'm Adam.

    Palindromes - Part Two
A palindrome is any word, line or even complete poem which reads the same backwards as it does forwards. This article examines common and less familiar palindromes, the longest palindromic word as well as other variations on this form of wordplay.
    Palindromes
The word 'PALINDROME' comes from the Greek word palindromos, which means 'running back again'. A palindrome is any word, line or even complete poem which reads the same backwards as it does forwards. zSB(3,3)
    Palindromes
A palindrome is a word, verse, sentence or poem which reads the same backwards as it does forwards. Here, you'll find a selection of books featuring this form of wordplay. Most of these books are for younger readers, aged 9 to 12.
    Palindrome and Semordnilap Checker
Just enter a word or phrase and hit the 'Reverse' button. If the result reads the same backwards as forwards, it's a palindrome. If it results in a different word, it's a semordnilap.

    The Twelve Days of Christmas
We're not quite at the "partridge in a pear tree" stage of the month yet, but I thought you might all enjoy this review, by Larry Urdang, of Thomas L. Bernard's The Twelve Days of Christmas: The Mystery and The Meaning , from Vol. XXI/3:
Professor Bernard, who teaches at Springfield College, became intrigued with the lyrics to the Christmas song, The Twelve Days of Christmas , when he first noticed the virtual redundancy of partridge and perdrix , the Latin word for the bird, leading him to surmise that the words in a pear tree could well have been Norman French for `en a perdrix,' or words to that effect. He allowed himself to succumb to the intrigue and, using his imagination and talent for research, traced out the other eleven days' worth of gifts as a solution to a conundrum.
Although there are several versions of the song, its earliest record is in a 13th-century manuscript in the library of Trinity College, Cambridge. Bernard not only carefully documents his ideas about the various interpretations that might be given the curiously anomalous references in the song but suggests possible variants. At bottom, his conjecture is that the entire song relates to a pilgrimage to Jerusalem from England, where (two) turtle doves is interpreted as `de tour Douvres,' whither one must go to cross to France, to `lors de Liban,' yielding (eleven)

    The mosaic organisation of BIMEs
Only out of the 584 PUs of the E. coli K-12 chromosome are single occurrences. All the others appear in clusters, containing up to twelve PUs. The distribution of PU number in BIMEs is shown below.
In these clusters, successive PUs alternate both in type and in orientation, and they are separated by short sequence motifs, located either between two heads (Head Internal Sequences or HIS) or two tails (Tail Internal Sequences or TIS). Two external motifs, A and B, flanking the tails of the last PUs, are found in some BIMEs. The figure below presents a typical organisation of PUs and "extra-PU" motifs in BIMEs.
Two different motifs can be found between to PU heads (HIS) : S is defined as a 12-14 bp-long sequence, with no strong sequence conservation, while L is 32-34 bp-long, with a very conserved nucleotide sequence, leading to the definition of a consensus. In the middle of this motif is found an IHF-binding site (in red).
    There are three TIS : l is 8-9 bp-long, s is 1 bp-long, and r has a variable size (ranging from 18 to 31 bp).

Composing literature in palindromes is an example of constrained writing . The word "palindrome" was coined from Greek roots palin ; "again") and dromos ; "way, direction") by English writer Ben Jonson in the 17th century. The actual Greek phrase to describe the phenomenon is karkinikê epigrafê crab inscription), or simply karkiniêoi ; crabs), alluding to the backward movement of crabs, like an inscription that can be read backwards.
