    Panama : Culture
Panamanian society of the 1980s reflected the nation's unusual geographical position as a transit zone. Panama's role as a crossing point had long subjected the isthmus to a mixture of outside determines not typically associated with Latin America. The population included East Asian, South Asian, European, North American, and Middle Eastern immigrants and their offspring, who came to Panama to take advantage of the commercial opportunities connected with the Panama Canal. black Antilleans, descendants of Caribbean laborers who worked on the construction of the canal, formed the largest single minority group; as English-speaking Protestants, they were set apart from the majority by both language and religion. Tribal Indians, often isolated from the larger society, constituted roughly 5 % of the population in the 1980s. They were distinguished by language, their indigenous belief systems, and a mixture of other cultural practices. Migration, both to cities and to less settled regions in the nation, was a critical component in contemporary social relations. City and nationside were linked because the urban-based elite owned ranches or plantations, farmers and ranchers provisioned cities, and migration was an experience common to tens of thousands of Panamanians. Land and an expanding urban economy were essential to absorb surplus labor from heavily populated regions of the nationside. It remained to be seen how the social system would function in the face of high urban unemployment in the more straitened economic circumstances of the late 1980s.

More than half the population lives in the Panama City–Colón metropolitan area. Panama City (Spanish: Ciudad de Panamá) is the cultural, technological and industrial capital and largest city and conurbation of the Republic of Panama as well as the Panamá Province. Panama City is the political, administrative and cultural center of the country.
Recently, Panama City has become one of the most important financial and touristic centers in the Americas, with more than 104 banks, and has become a hub for high-rise buildings (eight of the ten tallest skyscrapers in Latin America), commerce and industrialization. This is as per the Panama culture info
The culture of Panamanians is derived from European music, art and traditions that were brought over by the Spanish to Panama. Hegemonic forces have created hybrid forms of this, by blending African and Native American culture with European culture. Dance is a symbol of the diverse cultures that have coupled in Panama. The local folklore can not be experienced through a multitude of festivals, dances and traditions that have been handed down from generation to generation.

For many years, native Panamanians lived mostly alone. In the 16th century, Spanish explorers came to Panama. They brought with them Spanish culture and traditions. The Spanish way of life mixed with the native way of life to create something new. But one culture that remained mostly unchanged was that of the Kuna. The Kuna are a tribe of native Panamanians. They live on an island chain off Panama's north shore. Today's Kuna live much like their ancestors did many years ago. That's because until recently, they were mostly left alone. The Kuna are a close community. They have strong ties to their family, community, and simple way of life. Their society is matriarchal. That means that family ties are passed from the mother's side of the family. In such a society, women have an important place. For instance, after marriage, the newly married man must live in his wife's family's house. While living there, he has to work for his wife's family.

Experience a profound kind of Panama Culture at this Panama City attraction
If you want to experience Panama culture firsthand, put this Panama City attraction on your list of places to visit, unusual it might be. Something profound takes place here three times a week, and a mere visitor probably never will know what it is. This Panama City attraction is not on any normal tourist itinerary, yet it may well provide one of the most thought-provoking Panama culture experiences of a visit to the Republic of Panama’s capital city. Invited by a friend to attend his church one Sunday shortly after arriving here, I expected hymns, sermon from the pulpit, formality, a building architecture strongly colonial-Spanish. What I got was the opposite, a relaxed atmosphere where children were free to roam, yet did so quietly without obvious parental control; an atmosphere in which people could come or go without creating the slightest curiosity from others; a place with a cafeteria especially for the 1,000 children who eat there without charge every day; a place where genuine friendliness is palpable, even toward strangers. The Panama City attraction to which I refer, the Tabernáculo de la Fe, is an architectural horror, resembling a large warehouse rather than a church. The unadorned inside of its roof towers some 60 or 70 feet above the congregation. It holds upwards of 5,000 people at Easter and Christmas, but almost any regular Sunday, Wednesday or Friday sees more than 2,000 in attendance.
