by Sean on August 26th, 2010 + Panama City is the capital of Panama and is purported to be one of the most modern cities in Central America. The skyline is reminiscent of major cities in the US, while the old part of the city has narrow, cobblestone streets and colonial buildings.
+ If you were to think about the most important cultural attributes that you will see operating in business in Panama, they would be:
    - A hierarchical structure
    - Group-oriented interests
    - The importance of interpersonal relationships
    - An indirect form of communication + Panamanian society and business are highly stratified and vertically structured. People respect authority and look to those above them for guidance and decision making. Rank is important and those above you in rank must be treated with respect.
+ When greeting one another, women often pat each other on the right forearm or shoulder, rather than shake hands. If they are close friends, they may hug and kiss on the right cheek. Men shake hands until they know someone well, at which time they progress to the more traditional

San Blas
KUNA INDIANS - text by Sherry Thorup The Kuna Indians are a strongly-knit tribal society living on a chain of islands called San Blas Archipelago, on the Atlantic side of the Republic of Panama. Believed to be decendents of the Caribs, the Kuna Indians tribe still live in much the same manner as their ancestors. The San Blas people have cleverly managed to retain their tribal identity and contentedly lead a moral balanced life, free from the complexities of modern, highly-organized societies. The Kuna have a matriachal society in which the line of inheritance passes through the women. A young man, after marriage, must live in his mother-in-law's house and work for several years under apprenticeship to his father-in-law. Divorce is uncommon, although it requires no more than the husband to gather his clothes and move out of the house. The daughters of the Kuna people are prized because they will eventually bring additional manpower into the family. For some unknown reason, there is a high rate of albinism in the Kuna men. Because of the intensity of the sun in Central America, the albino men are not able to do the work expected of a Kuna man. In order to contribute to their community, they assume duties traditionally assigned to the women, including mola-making. Although encouraged not to marry, the albino men are accepted in the community and their work is respected by their peers.

Panama Culture - The Colorful Clothing in Panama
Usually, the way the people dress in a place speaks of the history and the culture of the country. This is very true with the clothing in Panama. The pollera is considered as the national clothing in Panama for women as well as the Panama hat for the men. This dress is usually being used for many Panama activities and attractions. It is being worn with a lot of jewelries and hair accessories, making it an unforgettable symbol of Panama culture. This attire of Panama culture has a long history; the pollera was the apparel of servants and nursemaids during the Spanish colonial era. It was first worn only indoors but eventually was enhanced and made its way into the public eye. This well-adorned clothing in Panama has its humble beginnings in the quarters of the rustic maidens to the aristocracy of fashionable women enjoying the attractions and activities of Old Panama. The pollera consists of the upper part or gown, the skirt and petticoat. The upper part is off shoulders blouse with ornaments such as ruffles and laces in very colorful designs. The skirt is also as elaborate as the blouse and they have the same motif. Trimmings are usually hand-made thread lace.
