It is characterized by sudden attacks of terror, usually accompanied by a pounding heart, sweatiness, weakness, faintness, or dizziness. During these attacks, people with panic disorder may flush or feel chilled; their hands may tingle or feel numb; and they may experience nausea, chest pain, or smothering sensations. Panic attacks usually produce a sense of unreality, a fear of impending doom, or a fear of losing control.

Panic Disorder
Women's Mental Health Home Mental Health Conditions Panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder. Other types of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder obsessive compulsive disorder social phobia , and post-traumatic stress disorders . Panic disorder affects women twice as often as men. Panic attacks are the most common symptom of this disorder. A person is having a panic attack when they feel:
  • A sense of terror that strikes suddenly and repeatedly with no warning Chest pain Difficulty breathing Flushes or chills Fear of losing control Fear of dying
Because these attacks are so unpredictable, many women may have intense anxiety between panic attacks. While most attacks last a few minutes on average, sometimes they can last as long as 10 minutes. In rare cases, they may last an hour or more.
Treatment
If you think you have an anxiety disorder such as panic disorder, the first person you should see is your family doctor. A physician can determine whether the symptoms that alarm you are due to an anxiety disorder, another medical condition, or both.

Panic disorder
Introduction
Everyone experiences feelings of anxiety and panic during their lifetime. It is a perfectly natural response, particularly when you are in a dangerous or stressful situation. However, for people with panic disorder, feelings of anxiety, stress and panic can occur at any time, usually for no obvious reason. Anxiety conditions There are several conditions where anxiety is one of the main symptoms. Phobias, generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), and post-traumatic stress disorder, can all cause severe anxiety. Panic attacks A panic attack is when your body experiences a sudden rush of intense psychological (mental) and physical symptoms. You may feel an overwhelming sense of fear, apprehension, and anxiety. As well as these feelings, you may also experience physical symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, trembling, and a sensation that your heart is beating irregularly (palpitations). A panic attack can be very frightening and intense, but it is not dangerous. It will not cause you any physical harm.

Panic disorder
Panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder in which someone has repeated attacks of intense fear that something bad will occur when not expected. The person lives in fear that another attack will occur. See also: Generalized anxiety disorder
Causes
The exact cause of panic disorders is unknown. Genetics may play a role. Studies suggest that if one identical twin has panic disorder, the other twin will also develop the condition 40% of the time. However, panic disorder often occurs when there is no family history. Panic disorder is twice as common in women as in men. Symptoms usually begin before age 25, but may occur in the mid 30s. Although panic disorder may occur in children, it is often not diagnosed until they are older. Before a diagnosis of panic disorder is made, people with this condition often have had visits to emergency rooms and health care providers for symptoms related to possible heart attack or other physical symptoms.

Panic: What Is It and How Do I Stop It?
Your heart is racing, you feel a funny tingling sensation in your fingers, you're sweaty, anxious and disoriented and feel a little detached from reality. You'll feel better once you get out of here and go get a drink of water and fresh air...you hope.
If you recognize feeling this way, you might have had a panic attack. These and other symptoms of anxiety ranging from chest pains to a fear of going crazy take many people to an emergency room or at least their family physician's office. But often, these individiuals leave more perplexed than when they arrived...because they have been told there is nothing physically wrong. It is just anxiety or stress.
Fight or Flight Response
During a panic attack, the body's fight or flight response begins when there is no real danger. All the stress hormones and adrenaline that you need to fight an armed intruder or run for your life are released at a time when there is no emergency. So your body is left with all of this extra "fuel" but no battle to consume it. And you feel pretty rotten, anxious and frazzled.
Anticipatory Anxiety
Fear of having another attack sets up the next episode. This "anticipatory anxiety" is so powerful! Telling yourself that you aren't in any physical danger can help keep the fear at bay. In fact, I often suggest to "give yourself permission" to experience the symptoms. This takes the power away from the fear and disarms it.

Panic Disorder
SYMPTOMS
People with panic disorder have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. They can't predict when an attack will occur, and many develop intense anxiety between episodes, worrying when and where the next one will strike. In between times there is a persistent, lingering worry that another attack could come any minute. When a panic attack strikes, most likely your heart pounds and you may feel sweaty, weak, faint, or dizzy. Your hands may tingle or feel numb, and you might feel flushed or chilled. You may have chest pain or smothering sensations, a sense of unreality, or fear of impending doom or loss of control. You may genuinely believe you're having a heart attack or stroke, losing your mind, or on the verge of death. Attacks can occur any time, even during nondream sleep. While most attacks average a couple of minutes, occasionally they can go on for up to 10 minutes. In rare cases, they may last an hour or more. Panic disorder strikes between 3 and 6 million Americans, and is twice as common in women as in men. It can appear at any agein children or in the elderlybut most often it begins in young adults. Not everyone who experiences panic attacks will develop panic disorder for example, many people have one attack but never have another. For those who do have panic disorder, though, it's important to seek treatment. Untreated, the disorder can become very disabling.
