Pantheism Pantheism: A History by Paul Harrison Pantheism is the belief that the universe and nature are divine. Every religion has had its pantheists. Pantheism is the perennial religion, which continually emerges from all transcendental or idealist religions. In addition people in every religion have seen God in nature, whether they formally express that identity or not. Examples include Shaftsbury, Rousseau, and many poets from Wordsworth to Robinson Jeffers. Pantheism has taken many diverse forms. Strict or scientific pantheism holds that God and the material universe are identical. Its first adherents were the Greek materialist Heraclitus, the Chinese Taoist Chuang Tzu, and the Stoic philosopher Zeno of Cittium. Later proponents have included the Christian David of Dinant, the neo-Confucian Chang Tsai, and the author of these pages, Paul Harrison. Taoism is a form of materialist pantheism, as are some types of Mahayan Buddhism. There have been many other types of pantheism. All of them identify God in some way with what is considered most fundamental in the Universe. Some pantheisms are idealistic or world-negating - believing that the visible world is unreal or an illusion, masking an underlying unity. These include the Eleatic school of Xenophanes and Parmenides, the Upanishads, and most schools of Mahayana Buddhism.

Panentheism is distinguished from pantheism , which holds that God is synonymous with the material universe. Briefly put, in pantheism, "God is the whole"; in panentheism, "The whole is in God." This means that the Universe in the first formulation is practically the Whole itself, but in the second the universe and God are not ontologically equivalent. In panentheism, God is not necessarily viewed as the creator or demiurge , but the eternal animating force behind the universe, some versions positing the universe as nothing more than the manifest part of God. In some forms of panentheism, the

Pantheism is not pansexuality , where chimps are the target of human sexual desires but many worshippers of pantheism become sexually aroused when exposed to chimpanzees. Pantheism has been around for over 5 million years when humans and chimps last shared a common ancestor. Early man would often worship the more culturally advanced Pan . Pantheism declined after the Neolithic because of creationist religions that threatened people with their lives if they didn't abadon their beliefs in more sensible religions like Darwinism and its offshoot Pantheism.

The word "pantheism," like many theological words, comes from the Greek language. Pan means "all" or "everything" and Theos means "god." So, pantheism is the belief that everything somehow is a part of god. Our galaxy, the stars, our solar system, all living things, all thoughts, all people, everything is part of who or what god is. Much of the pantheistic view can be summed up in the statement, "All is god, and god is all." Although a form of the word "Pantheism" was first used in English in 1705, its roots go far back into antiquity. Many current religious and philosophical systems that have their basis in Pantheism include Buddhism, Confucianism, Darwinism, Freemasonry, Hinduism, Occultism, Taoism, and the New Age movement. These are based on three broad types of Pantheism.
Materialistic Pantheism holds that the material universe is all that exists - there is nothing else. Our thoughts, feelings, hopes, dreams, and aspirations are nothing more than biochemical reactions occurring in the cells of the brain, glands, and organs. We are nothing but organic machines. In addition, since nothing but matter exists there was no one or nothing to create this matter. Thus matter must be eternal. "God" is just another name for the material universe. This form of Pantheism has more in common with atheism than with other forms of theism.
Idealistic Pantheism teaches that just as the human soul or mind resides in the human body, the universal soul or mind (i.e. god) resides in the physical universe. God infuses, works through, and expresses the divine essence through the material world. Ultimate reality is found, therefore, not in the material world, but in the spiritual world. Some go so far as to say that the physical world is merely an illusion - either god's or mine - in which I play my part. The sum of all thoughts and feelings is therefore "god."

Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy
Rudolf Hermann Lotze (1817–1881)
Hermann Lotze was a key figure in the philosophy of the second half of the nineteenth century, influencing practically all the leading philosophical schools of the late nineteenth and the coming twentieth century, including (i) the neo- Kantians ; (ii) Brentano and his school; (iii) The British idealists; (iv) William James’s pragmatism; (v) Husserl ’s phenomenology; (vi) Dilthey’s philosophy of life; (vii) Frege ’s new logic; (viii) the early Cambridge analytic philosophy. Lotze’s main philosophical significance is as a contributor to an anti- Hegelian objectivist movement in German-speaking Europe. The publication of the first editions of his Metaphysics (1841) and Logic (1843) constituted the third wave of this movement. The first came in 1837, in the form of Bolzano ’s Wissenschaftslehre . The second came three years later, in 1840, when Friedrich Adolf Trendelenburg published his Logische Untersuchungen . Lotze’s early works furthered this objectivist line of thought. And when a new surge of philosophical objectivism crested again in the 1870s, Lotze used the opportunity to restate his position in the second editions of his Logic (1874) and of his Metaphysics Closely following Trendelenburg, Lotze advanced an objectivist philosophy that did not start from the subject-object opposition in

Pantheism
The book recognized as containing the most complete attempt at explaining and defending pantheism from a philosophical perspective is Spinoza's Ethics , finished in 1675 two years before his death. In 1720 John Toland wrote the Pantheisticon: or The Form of Celebrating the Socratic-Society in Latin. He (possibly) coined the term "pantheist" and used it as a synonym for "Spinozist." However, aside from some interesting pantheistic sounding slogans (like "Every Thing is to All, as All is to Every Thing"), and despite promising "A short Dissertation upon a Two-fold philosophy of the Pantheists" Toland's work has little to do with pantheism.

Although the Gaia hypothesis extends the ecological idea by applying it to the Eart as an ecosystem and offers a holistic approach to nature, Lovelock supports technology and industrialization and is an opponent of 'back to nature' mysticism and ideas such as Earth worship. Johannes Eckhart was one of the greatest of Christian mystics. He was born at Hochheim in Thringen, Germany, in 1260, and entered the Dominican order when he was 15. Later he occupied several high posts in the order in Germany. Eckhart also taught theology at the Universities of Paris and Cologne. In 1326 Eckhart was formally charged with heresy by the archbishop of Cologne, Heinrich von Virneburg - who also prosecuted the Brethren of the Free Spirit in Cologne around this same time. The charge appears to have been considered proven. In 1329, shortly after Eckhart's death, Pope John XXII published a bull condemning 28 propositions from Eckhart's works. Eckhart is said to have retracted the errors. He claimed that he may have erred, but he was not a heretic. Probably his eminence protected him, for others who put forward similar views were indeed burned along with their works. By the standards of medieval Christianity, Eckhart was indeed a heretic. He stressed the unity of God and the capacity of the individual soul to become one with God during life. He said that the human soul was superior to the angels. And he spoke of passing beyond God to a `simple ground,' a `still desert,' without any distinctions, out of which all things were created - a conception strikingly similar to the

In that chapter Lewis discusses Mystical Pantheism. Also, in his work 'Conscious Interlude' in Chapter III -Inquiry into Knowledge, he delves into some of the epistemology (theory of knowledge), which leads a student to Mystical Pantheism. What is pantheism?
by Matt Slick Pantheism is the position that God and nature are the same thing.  “Pantheism” comes from two Greek words, ‘pan’ meaning ‘all’ and ‘theos’ meaning 'god.' So, it would teach that all the stars, galaxies, planets, mountains, wind, and rain, are all one and the same... part of what God is.  So, pantheists would say that all is God. Biblical Christianity teaches that God is separate from his creation and he created it (Gen. 1:1-30), where pantheism says that God and creation share the same nature and essence. A huge problem with pantheism is that it cannot account for the existence of the universe.  The universe is not infinitely old.  It had a beginning.  This would mean that God also had a beginning, but how can something bring itself into existence?  This is impossible, so this leaves us with the question of where God and the universe came from.  Pantheism cannot answer this question and it naturally leads to absurdities.
