PANTHEISM
Under pantheistic theory, only God exists and all that exists is God. There are various forms of pantheism, but the most common argues that the totality of reality - you, the computer, everything - is a part of God. Another common form is that simply the universe itself or perhaps the laws of nature are God. There are four named categories of pantheism in the literature: Theomonistic Pantheism : Only God exists and the independent existence of nature is denied - also referred to as acosmism (a-*cos-mism, or "no-world") Physiomonistic Pantheism : Only nature or the universe exist, but they are referred to with the term "God". Thus, God is denied having independent existence. Transcendental or Mystical Pantheism : Actually panentheism, dealt with below. Immanent-Transcendent Pantheism : God works through and is revealed through nature (also called Idealism sometimes). When scientific pantheists say they revere the universe, they are not talking about a supernatural being. Instead, they are referring to the way human senses and our emotions force us to respond to the overwhelming mystery and power that surrounds us. Pantheism has occurred more often in the East, for example in Hinduism. There are relatively few examples of pantheistic systems developing in the West, with major examples being the philosophies of Spinoza and Hegel. The earliest evidence of pantheism is found in the Vedas of Brahmanism, perhaps the oldest existing religion, dating back to 1000 BCE. It is also associated with the Egyptian religion when Ra, Isis and Osiris were identified with all existence. Many philosophical scholars think the great Greek philosopher Parmenides was a pantheist as well as Plotinus and Erigen.

ABOUT THE ICON FEATURED RANDOM QUOTE
“as each of us can live but one life, a choice must perforce be made.
We choose in reality without ceasing; without ceasing, also, we abandon many things.
The route we pursue in time is strewn with the remains of all that we began to be,
of all that we might have become.
But nature, which has at command an incalculable number of lives,
is in no wise bound to make such sacrifices"
[Henri Bergson - 1907] ABOUT THE QUOTE OTHER QUOTES Index to What's New and What's Coming!
WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT? For years, I have been teaching people a form of spirituality that eliminates the need for a god formed in man's image; that does not require angels, devils, or other mythical entities. There is none of the ancient cultural influences, such as sexism, elitism, or racism. The teachings are based upon reason. This site is the result of people insisting that I start writing this down. The text may seem somewhat disjointed; but I write the way I teach: 1 - certain principles must be established in advance. 2 - you must understand why humans are the way they are. 3 - you only receive the pieces to the puzzle; you will not truly understand unless you are able to piece everything together into the whole: otherwise, this would be like the religions of the world, where you are told what to think, and are expected to blindly follow, without comprehension.

65. On God
A discussion of erroneous ways of thinking of God and the defense of a (non-Christian) pantheistic interpretation.

On God
There are two fundamental errors which are often made in thinking about God. The first (and worse error) is that God is "out there". The second (and better error) is that God is "within". The claim that God is "out there" is common to the Western monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. This is the most pernicious error ever to have corrupted spiritual thinking. To say that God is "out there" is to imply that one is separate from God, and renders God an object, to which can be attributed various qualities. Among the most common of these are the alleged qualities of being a ruler, a lawgiver, a judge, a delegator of authority, an interested party in the conflicts that humans wage among themselves. In such conflicts it is always asserted that "God is on our side" against those perceived as "the enemy". Such an assertion is then used to justify acts of barbarity, such as the slaughtering of the enemy — "in the name of God" of course. To believe that God is "out there" is to believe that God and oneself are separate. This is a basic error. There can be nothing other than God. To believe that from God can come something which is not of the substance of God is absurd. All that exists is within God. This includes everything that makes up the being you think of as yourself, including your body and your mind. Your body is not made of some kind of "matter", basically dead and lifeless, as materialist scientists would have you believe. Your body is of the same substance as God, and insofar as we can distinguish body from mind, your mind is also of the same substance as God.

66. PANTHEIST AGE

(Click icons for WindowsMediaPlayer to play streaming orchestral music) Pantheistic ideas have also expanded into popular culture. Gallup reports ever-growing numbers of people engaged in "an intensive spiritual search and a continuing desire for inward and spiritual growth." Web sites, song lyrics, and self help books strive to recapture a sense of the sacred that is currently missing in many lives. National bestsellers like Hymns To An Unknown God and Spiritual Literacy strum several pantheistic chords.
As the bedrock religion of humanity, Pantheism could be bulldozed, but not banished, by later world religions. Eastern faiths including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism retained thin layers of Pantheism and they never abandoned a sense of unity with Nature. Early Christianity contained outcrops of Pantheism; Saint Francis of Assisi celebrated the natural world and kinship with all life.
The environmental crisis has triggered reinterpretation of biblical texts to emphasize "caring for creation." Works on ecology and theology pouring forth from religious publishing houses contain decidedly pantheistic overtones. For example, one writer suggests that "God can be envisioned not as a king or ruler external to the universe but as the sacred whole of the universe itself." Another states "The cosmic process is within God, and God is within the cosmos as the ultimate power of life." Still another observes "The voices, coming from varying religious traditions, call us to move from a paradigm of domination, fear, and alienation to a paradigm of partnership, mutuality, and reverence for all living things, wherein spiritual values are reclaimed and divine immanence is reaffirmed." The continuing quiet pantheization of mainstream religion has the potential to contribute substantially to the sanctity and safekeeping of the world.

Those who take the time to trek the extra distance to reach the site, enter and walk the Labyrinth, pray, meditate, or simply examine the messages and talismans left in the center are rewarded with an experience that is profoundly spiritual. A total absence of clergy and congregation, the sensation is quiet and humble, yet up front and personal. The Mazzariello Labyrinth serves a diverse group of visitors for a range of purposes. Although no more than several people can be usually found at the Labyrinth at any given time, the site receives visitors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Labyrinth plays a small yet essential part in the lives of many.
