    Paraguay Culture
Paraguay’s tumultuous history since the 1600s has led to the development of a very diverse and non-Westernized culture. Paraguay’s people are friendly, community-driven and love a celebration. They are also very hard-working and accustomed to government and political turmoil. Nowhere else in South America can tourists find a hardier and well-lived people. Paraguay’s main culture is derived from its Spanish colonial roots and traditional Guarani native customs. In the 1600s, most Spaniards who arrived from Europe inter-married with the native women. As a result, 93% of Paraguay’s population is a mix of European and Guarani background. Historically, these people have been referred to as “mestizos,” though this term has fallen into disuse. 80% of people in Paraguay are bilingual, speaking Spanish and the native Guarani tongue. A good deal of them also speak Jopara, which is a mix of Spanish and Guarani. The Paraguay people place family above all else - including government and state loyalty. Family is the center of the Paraguay culture. A culturally significant practice surrounding family is the Paraguay concept of godparents. Newborns in Paraguay are given godparents who are in favorable social positions and often wealthier than the biological parents. New parents in Paraguay view this as a custom protecting their children from financial ruin in the event of their death.

Paraguayan culture is a blend chiefly of Guaranian and Spanish elements, supplemented by more recent Argentine, German, and Italian influences. The culture of Paraguay has remained isolated and therefore has retained many features introduced in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Spanish conquerors, artisans, and Jesuit missionaries. The Ateneo Paraguayo, a leading cultural center, sponsors art exhibits, lectures, and concerts, and Guarani culture is promoted by the Academy of Guarani Language and Culture, the Indian Association of Paraguay, and the Guarani Theater. deeper links

Paraguay - Info The Republic of Paraguay (Spanish: República del Paraguay, pron. IPA [re'puβlika del para'ɣwaj], Guarani: Tetä Paraguáype) is a landlocked nation in South America. It lies on both banks of the Paraguay River, bordering Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. The name of the country means "water that goes to the water," derived from the Guaraní words pará ("ocean"), gua ("to/from"), and y ("water"). The expression in Guaraní often refers solely to Asunción, but in Spanish refers to the entire country.

Do they sometimes say you are too young to understand other things? In Paraguay, half of the people are under 15 years old, so it is important for young people to be very knowledgeable about their country. Working together, young people have done much to improve their country. Led by Camilo Soares Machado, they once even prevented a coup! In April 1996, Paraguay's president, Juan Carlos Wasmosy, dismissed army commander General Lino Oviedo for breaking the law. Many people believed that Oviedo's supporters would try to take over the government. Suddenly, it seemed that all the progress that had been made in constitutional reforms, the expansion of civil liberties, the emergence of citizens' organizations, and the birth of new political parties could be wiped out in a matter of hours. No one knew what to do. Everyone wanted to hide. President Wasmosy went to the U.S. government for protection.

Paraguay.us Paraguay History The original inhabitants of eastern Paraguay were the semi-nomadic Guaraní. Several hunter-gatherer groups, known as Guaycuri populated the Chaco. In 1524, Alejo Garcia became the first European to cross Paraguay, with the aid of Guarani guides. Three years later, Sebastian Cabot sailed up the Rio Paraguay but founded no settlements. This was left to Pedro de Mendoza, whose expedition settled at Asuncion after fleeing Buenos Aires. The colony flourished, becoming the nucleus of Spanish settlement in southeastern South America and sparking an era of intriguing socialization. The native Indian population gradually absorbed the Spaniards, who in turn adopted Guarani food, language and customs. Over time, a Spanish-Guarani society emerged, with Spaniards dominating politically, and the mestizo offspring adopting Spanish cultural values. Paraguay declared independence in 1811 After the war
