  • Compiler input language Hpfc is an High Performance Fortran Compiler which is being developed at CRI . This project aims at building a prototype compiler to be able to test new optimization techniques for compiling HPF . It has been supported by PARADIGME [ ]. The compiler is implemented on top of PIPS (Scientific Programs Interprocedural Parallelizer) which provides many program analyses such as effects, regions , etc. Realistic codes (hundreds of lines, heavy I/Os, not fully optimizable) are compiled by the prototype and have run on a network of workstations and on a CM5. Some experiments were also performed on an alpha farm. The prototype compiler is available at the source level and as SunOS4 and Solaris2 binaries with the PIPS distribution (CRI/ENSMP). Note that this implementation is a working research prototype! This means that despite it has shown to work on real HPF codes, and sometimes to perform better than commercial compilers, it remains a prototypes with bugs, core dumps, limitations and small documentation and small support.

The Coherent Virtual Machine Goals The C oherent V irtual M achine (CVM) software Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) system is being developed here at the University of Maryland. Project goals include:
  • Multiple protocol support - CVM's initial configuration provides four memory models, single- and multiple-writer versions of lazy release consistency, sequential consistency, and eager release consistency.
  • Extensibility - CVM's source is freely available, and modules are written in C++. New classes can easily be derived from a master Protocol class, allowing new protocols to be easily incorporated.
  • Multi-threading support - CVM is multi-threaded, allowing overlap of computation and communication through context switching.
  • On-line reconfiguration - CVM uses thread mobility to support automatic online reconfiguration. Thread migration will be used to adjust the degree of parallelism, to balance load, and to minimize communication requirements.
  • Heterogeneity - CVM (version 1.0) will allow execution on heterogeneous clusters of workstations.
  • Race detection - We built a practical online race detection system that is guaranteed to catch all races that actually occurred during an execution, with an order of magnitude less overhead than previous systems.

Fast Messages (FM)
Fast Messages (FM) is a low-level messaging layer designed to deliver underlying network's hardware performance to the application, even for small messages. For example, FM delivers 43 megabytes/second for messages as short as 256 bytes with even higher peak performance. FM makes bandwidth accessible, without requiring changes in applications (or protocols) to increase message size. Fast Messages (FM) is also designed to enable convenient and high performance layering of other API's and protocols atop it. As such it provides key guarantees: reliable, in order delivery, and host-network decoupling as well as a composable interface: efficient gather/scatter, receiver rate control, and per-packet multithreading which make it easy to build higher level interfaces based on FM. Some of the interfaces our group has built include MPI Shmem Put/Get Global Arrays and BSP. Because the FM messaging layer is a simple, efficient set of primitives, it is appropriate for implementors of a language runtime or communications library or even the target of a compiler, in addition to application programmer use. Fast Messages is the core communication layer the High Performance Virtual Machines (HPVM) project.

Shmem Put/Get-FM: Shmem Put/Get Interface on Fast Messages
Shmem Put/Get-FM is a high-performance cluster implementation of the Shmem Put/get interface based loosely on Bob Numrich's Shmem library for the Cray T3D. The implementation is based on Fast Messages . This library provides a shared global address space, data movement operations between locations in that address space, and synchronization primitives. Significant changes from Numrich's library include redesign for 32-bit machines and implementing only a subset of the interface. Put operations in our cluster implementation operate with low overhead at the "putting" side and can be competitive with MPP implementations. Get operations are blocking and pay a round trip delay, generally nearly 25 microseconds on our Pentium Pro cluster, much greater than in a tightly-coupled MPP. Platforms

What is GAMMA?

The Typical drawback of a Gigabit Ethernet cluster is the poor performance of inter-process communication over the interconnect. Current implementations of industry-standard communication primitives, APIs, and protocols, usually show high communication latencies and sub-optimal communication throughput. The Genoa Active Message MAchine (GAMMA) is a low-latency protocol for Gigabit Ethernet clusters running Linux. GAMMA runs on IA-32 processors (Intel Pentium, AMD K6, and superior models) and their 64-bit extensions (AMD Athlon64, AMD Opteron, Intel EM64T). Multi-CPU and multi-core nodes are supported.

LAM/MPI is now in a maintenance mode. Bug fixes and critical patches are still being applied, but little real "new" work is happening in LAM/MPI. This is a direct result of the LAM/MPI Team spending the vast majority of their time working on our next-generation MPI implementation Open MPI Although LAM is not going to go away any time soon (we certainly would not abondon our user base!) the web pages, user lists, and all the other resources will continue to be available indefinitely we would encourage all users to try migrating to Open MPI. Since it's an MPI implementation, you should be able to simply recompile and re-link your applications to Open MPI they should "just work." Open MPI contains many features and performance enhancements that are not available in LAM/MPI. Make today an Open MPI day!

    The Paradyn project develops technology that aids tool and application developers in their pursuit of high-performance, scalable, parallel and distributed software. The primary project, Paradyn , leverages a technique called dynamic instrumentation to efficiently obtain performance profiles of unmodified executables. This dynamic binary instrumentation technology is independently available to researchers via the Dyninst API Other research by the Paradyn project includes dynamic instrumentation of running operating system kernels, the Kerninst project, and the development of middleware for scalable, efficient, robust applications in the MRNet multicast/reduction network.
