ENDANGERED YELLOW-EARED PARROTS
PROTECTED BY GUERRILLAS
By Frank Bajak, Associated Press, Colombia
(As printed in the P.S.UK. Magazine Vol 34 Feb., 2000)
Three yellow-eared parrots swoop down into a glade of wax palms, switching from wide arcs to tightly synchronized barrel rolls, screaming raucously.
  • A sight to behold in a breathtaking alpine setting. But a vision that may be fleeting. This parrot, Ognorhynchus icterotis, thrived in the cloud forests of the northern Andes a century ago. Now it is among the world's most critically endangered species. Fewer than 75 are known to exist. Ironically, this bird has become a beneficiary of Colombia's civil conflict. Its habitat is deep in rebel-dominated territory, and the guerrillas have banned hunting wildlife to preserve Colombia's rich biological diversity. On a waning Sunday afternoon, the bright green-and-yellow parrots alight on the conical rim of a dead palm and clamber down to a nest, where the female regurgitates lunch to two loudly chattering chicks. the mating couple, their young helper and the chicks are among 61 yellow-eared parrots whose discovery in mid-April was ecstasy for bird conservationists.

Species page to learn more about different species of parrots that you might be interested in. The terms "exotic birds" and "parrots" are used interchangeably on this site. Exotic birds are now one of the most popular kind of animals kept as pets today. However, one of the biggest differences between parrots and other pets is that parrots are not domesticated. While birds have been kept in captivity for quite a while, they have not been bred for specific traits that would allow them to live easily with humans. Exotic birds are technically still wild animals. They retain all of their instinctual behaviors and will behave the same as their wild cousins in the jungles and grasslands around the world. This means that they have strong urges to behave certain ways that may make life in captivity difficult and frustrating for both the bird and the bird's guardian.

Parrots - Understanding Your Parrot
Brodie's Nest Understanding parrots' vocalization and body language is very important in creating successful relationship with them. All parrots are intelligent enough to "tell" us if they are happy, sick, hungry, tired or angry. Parrots owners should learn to interpret their pets' sounds and behavior, which will enable them to tame and train them successfully. Here are the meanings of some parrot's behavioral patterns.
  • Flashing pupils. Flashing or dilating pupils together with tail fanning mean aggression and nervousness. If you insist on the contact, the bird can bite you. This behavior is also exhibited in response to another bird or animal.
  • Barking. Even without any contacts with dogs, parrots can bark in excitement during chatter or display their dominance.
  • Growling. Growling accompanied with raised feathers on the neck and dilating pupils mean that the bird doesn't want to be bothered. It's better to leave the parrot alone for some time.
  • Purring. Purring is similar to growling, but it indicates contentment. The body of the parrot is usually relaxed.

Eclectus Parrot
Male-Female Eclectus Parrots
PARROTS IN GENERAL:
Parrots are gaily and boldly colored birds. Their plumage, which is evenly but thinly distributed over their bodies, consists of patches of solid color, often sharply contrasting one with another. All parrots share a number of distinctive features. The most obvious of these is the characteristic parrot bill which consists of a downward-curving and somewhat hooked upper mandible which fits neatly over a smaller, upward-curving lower mandible. The feet of parrots are also unusual. The two outer toes of the foot point backwards and grip in opposition to the two forward pointing inner toes. This provides them with an extremely powerful grasp, enabling them to hold and manipulate objects close to their bill. Most parrots are tree-dwellers, and they tend to be most plentiful in and around lowland tropical forests. They feed on fruits, especially wild figs, seed, nuts, berries, buds and blossoms. Parrots nest in holes, usually in trees, but sometimes among rocks or in termite mounds. The two to five white eggs hatch after about three weeks. The helpless young are fed by both parents on predigested food that is regurgitated.

The female always seems to setting with her head down, (not alert as the male) and she has an area on her shoulder that her feathers seem to b ruffled all the time. What do you think causes this?
