... News The World Parrot Trust (WPT) announced today the launch of the FlyFree Campaign, an international alliance of bird conservation and welfare groups working together to halt the unsustainable trade in wild caught parrots and return parrots to the wild. After hundreds of years of active trade in wildlife, a coordinated global effort has been initiated to end the trade in wild caught parrots and return the birds to the wild. The World Parrot Trust (WPT) announced today the launch of the FlyFree Campaign, an international alliance of animal welfare and conservation groups working together to halt the unsustainable trade in wild caught parrots - a first in the global effort to save parrots, one of the most endangered groups of birds on the planet. “This campaign really couldn’t have come at a better time to help save parrots,” stated Dr. James D. Gilardi, Executive Director for the World Parrot Trust. “In the last few days we were notified of a massive confiscation of 300 Grey Parrots at an airport in Cameroon.” As part of the new FlyFree movement these birds are receiving emergency funding for their care and release, which is taking place at Limbe Wildlife Centre in Cameroon, Africa. Over the past several decades the trade in wild caught birds has caused the suffering and loss of millions of birds. Legal and illegal harvests for the domestic and international pet trade are destructive to wild parrot populations and few birds survive from trapping to the point of sale. Those that do survive can often carry diseases, some of which are dangerous to humans, are costly to manage, and can lead to disease outbreaks in the importing countries.

Practical - Index Pets Pet Care Parrots ... General The Great Escape
by Louise Bauck B.Sc., DVM, M.VSc
Every avian veterinarian is familiar with frantic phone calls regarding winged escapees. Even the most vigilant owner can be a victim of unfortunate circumstances: the forgotten open window, the door that no one closed, etc. This is especially true for the modern bird owner, who tends to make a greater effort to provide a more natural lifestyle, including plenty of exercise and an opportunity for flight. After the initial shock and dismay of a loss, bereft owners come to the grim realization that the escaped bird faces many hazards, including some that may occur after being found. Just last weekend, while I was out working at the local high school in a volunteer education program, my husband received a frantic phone call concerning the smallest member of the parrot family - a suddenly liberated budgerigar. As a large-animal veterinarian, my husband isn't too familiar with such cases, so the best he could come up with was: "Make a Lost Pet sign" (not too many swine and cattle make that break for freedom I guess). Fortunately he also mentioned my location at the high school.

Reading the thread about the saga of Melanie's unwelcome peacock struck me that I've been reading a lot about stray birds lately. I got a kick out of the articles in the NY Times Dining sections (4/4 and 3/30)about William Grimes's adopted chicken, and its subsequent disappearance, and a recent New Yorker article on the wild parrots that live in Flatbush, Brooklyn by Adam Gopnick (I think). The NYT articles are accessible online, but I'm not sure about the New Yorker article. All worthwhile reading. Cheers. Permalink Reply By Eric Eto on Apr 04, 2001 02:14PM

Does anyone here do this?
I've read a few things about people who do and those who don't.
What is your guy's opinion on this topic?
Trim? File? I've read to never use a Dremel or grinder as those get hot and they are uncomfortale to the bird. Sunday October 8, 2006 12:52 pm Flying tumbler Joined: 28 Aug 2005 Posts: 2310 Location: Ohio, USA All of our Beaks, have only been trimed with a Dremel. out of 15 birds we have had Cody done one time. Just to remove the sharp point, until he stopped striking out (he bite all the way through my finger nail). Amy one time when we first got her, just to take the scale build up on the side. Charile one time, when he was younger, for a scale build up. That is the only times. Beaks, generally take care of them selfs. They will rub them on thier pearchs and keep them down that way. It is up to us to give them pearchs that will help them keep thier beaks in shape, as well as thier toe nails.

56. Exhibiting, Breeding & Hybridizing Agapornis Roseicollis
Information aimed at enriching the knowledge base of peachfaced lovebird and budgerigar owners, hybridizers and selective or exhibition breeders.
http://users.accesscomm.ca/parrot/
This page is dedicated to the accumulation and dissemination of information that will enrich the knowledge base of peachfaced lovebird and budgerigar owners, hybridizers and selective or exhibition breeders, by providing a greater practical and theoretical familiarity with large scale colony and cage breeding activities and mechanics. It will also attempt to shed light on artificial selection and breeding with the intent of describing the many methodologies and principles surrounding a program aimed at developing a line, strain or variety of birds. It will also examine the ethics of hybridization and the best way to approach this objective. Descriptions of new research findings, behaviors, experiences and hybrid breeding processes are welcome. They can be forwarded to the web master, who will see that they are posted here. The site examines potentially contentious colony breeding methods, and breeding comparisons, as well as success with other bird and parrot species, and their similarity to Agapornis roseicollis (lovebirds). As a consequence of your participation I am hoping that we will all gain a greater understanding of what is possible with our parrots, parakeets and pigeons. Some of the information on these pages may be completely erroneous, but until someone can correct it or provide a different position I wont change anything. Some perspectives may anger you, but hopefully they will also help you to think about the way we currently perceive our birds. Please help me to correct or improve parts of this sites, or add more to these pages. Articles are welcome.
