Harvard biologist Mike Schindlinger introduces you to the parrots he studies, as individuals as they move through their daily lives - singing, cavorting and playing as they explore their environment; doing chores, like eating, roosting, and caring for young - with an intelligence not dissimilar, in ways, to our own.
The power to imitate, for which parrots are famous, are used by the Yellow-headed Amazon to learn its population's complex and varied vocabulary, and learn it accurately. By the time they are only two months out of the nest, they are practicing the complex vocal patterns they will use to socialize with others of their species. Different species of parrots - and sometimes even different groups of a single species - have their own "language," a set of sounds shared in common, which they use to communicate amongst themselves. They learn this "language" as they grow, and the "oral traditions" of a population are passed down for many years, generation to generation.

We lost Rudy one of our lovebirds to gout and kidney failure in July. Today, November 1st 2007, we lost his cage mate and best buddy Gympie a male parakeet. Gympie suffered with a cancerous tumor on his abdomen. Rudy and Gympie were both given up by a family that was moving back to Australia two years ago and couldn't take them with. Both the little guys will be terribly missed. Thanks you to Dr. Susan Horton for her wonderful care of both the little guys. Click on the links below to view individual pages for each of my parrots. African Gray Parrots - Distribution
Togo The African Grey Parrot African Gray parrots live in the tropical forests of central Africa. The nearer to the Equator, the smaller and darker in color are the Grays. There exist two recognizable variations: the timneh (smaller and darker) and the red-tailed. There exist also Ghana, Togo, Cameroon, Congo and Angola Gray variations.
African Gray Parrots - History
In earlier days, natives killed Gray parrots for food and for their red tail feathers, which were used for decoration and were considered to have magic power. In the 19th century, African Gray parrots were sold to the Europeans and these birds gained popularity among them. At that time parrots were stuffed into reed cylinders and transported by sea. Strangely enough people thought that the parrots didn't require water. Even the European veterinarians prescribed no water for Gray parrots. Importation of wild caught parrots into the USA and some other countries ceased in 1992 with the wild bird Conservation Act. Nowadays African Gray parrots are not caught in the wild, but bred.
African Gray Parrots - Social Organization
An African Gray parrot lives and feeds in small areas. Grays are not-migrants. Usually they gather in large flocks and form subgroups of 20-30 birds. After hatching and fledging, the youth stay with the parents for 4-5 months. Adult African Gray parrots usually pair for life and often feed and clean each other.

Tinkerbell Legacy - Living with a flying parrot
How plans and directions in life altered
shanlung November 16th, 20:53
I flew into Phnom Penh cloaked in light rain.
I had not booked hotel but I decide to trust the touts at the airport. For a cost of a 9 dollar taxi ride into the city, they also will find an hotel for you at the price you determined. Their choice was quite acceptable and I got myself a twenty dollar room in nice hotel with friendly staff.
I found myself in a city rated fairly relaxed as to marijuana. After all, it featured in their traditional cooking which got the world the happy soup and its later transmogrification to happy pizzas.
So it is not too difficult to get into altered state of consciousness here. I was nicely surprised the quality was slightly lower than what is expected in Amsterdam.
Then watched Nat Geog and Discovery documentaries. And drifted effortlessly into those worlds.
I woke up and took stock of the hotel and where it was as I came with no books on Cambodia and no maps and good to know just where you are.
I know vaguely it was near the grand market due East of me with the riverside beyond that.

Talking Parrots
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on July 23rd, 2010
A young parrot bonds easily with its owner, that is you, which makes teaching it to talk a lot easier.  Just like with any other young pet, if you treat it gently and with patience, it will learn to trust you and feel comfortable when handled.  Most talking parrots were trained at an early age, and as they get used to training, they progress further into expanding their vocabulary or performing tricks. What do you when you bring a newly purchased young parrot home? Give the bird time to settle in its new environment.  Be around the bird and talk to it gently.  It is common for the bird to retreat back when you attempt to touch it in the cage.  Build on the relationship until the bird shows no sign of nervousness.  Do not let children to come near the bird at this stage. Offering food from your finger is a great way to build trust and confidence.  A millet spray is useful for this purpose because you don’t need to extend your hand too close to the bird.  As trust is built, you can gradually shorten the millet spray to get closer to the bird.  Even when you are not teaching the young parrot to talk at this moment, it is still absorbing the sounds around it and that includes whatever you say to it and the sounds of appliances in the home such as the door bell, telephone, microwave, tv etc. Once confidence and trust is built, and you are the best person to know this, your training program to teach your parrot to talk can begin.  There many ways to do this and I have written about this in my previous posts.  I recommend that that you use modern technology to assist you so that you can save your energy for other purposes.  When I say modern technology, that includes the use of CD recorded sounds specially made for teaching parrots to talk, or your voice pre-recorded on tape and played at different times of the day when you not at home.  You can be creative too by letting your bird listen to catchy phrases, or songs from famous singers such as Pavarotti.  You will be amazed by the results your parrot come up with.
