Highly adapted for life in the water, penguins have countershaded dark and white plumage, and their wings have become flippers . Most penguins feed on krill fish squid , and other forms of sealife caught while swimming underwater. They spend about half of their life on land and half in the oceans. Although all penguin species are native to the southern hemisphere, they are not found only in cold climates, such as Antarctica. In fact, only a few species of penguin live so far south. Several species are found in the temperate zone, and one species, the

Penguins Are Kewl! - Home Page OK, why am I starting a new web site about penguins [= , noun, singular; , plural; ], you might ask? The penguin is one of my favorite animals, along with the walrus and the hedgehog , and has been a collecting interest for about 20 years already. Walrus and hedgehog web pages may also eventually appear, but most of that collection is in the Canary Islands , Spain, and I have no idea when I shall be able to return there to take the pics and get the corresponding data. This material is not intended as a review of the natural history and sex life of penguins, which may probably be found elsewhere on the Internet it is a record of the penguins , in many media, sizes and formats, which I have acquired over the years. I have some figures in metal, glass, acrylic, porcelain, in the form of toys, mostly plush and beanie-like, and some miscellaneous penguin-related items. You will notice that I also included a section about the LINUX computer operating system, having a penguin as its logo.

Animal: Penguin Species: There are 17 different species of penguin including the Adelie, African, Chinstrap, Emperor, King, and Royal penguin. Lifespan: The average lifespan of a penguin is 15-20 years. The largest species of penguin is the Emperor penguin. Emperor penguins can weigh between 66-88 lbs and are about 4ft tall. The smallest species of penguin is the Little/Blue penguin, which is only 16 inches tall and weighs about 2 lbs! Habitat: Though all species of penguin naturally reside in the southern hemisphere of the world, not all of them live in cold climates. Penguins can be found in warm climates on the coasts of South America, Africa, the Galapagos islands and New Zealand. Emperor penguins are the only species that endure the freezing cold of Antartica through the winter. Diet: The penguins diet primarily consists of fish, krill, squid, and crustaceans. Family Life: Most species of penguins live and breed in large colonies from 100 to thousands of pairs of penguins. Penguins form monogamous pairs for a mating season. Once the egg is laid, most species take turn incubating the egg. On member of the pair will sit on the egg for days or even a week while the other mate hunts for food. The Emperor penguins, however, leave incubation to the male penguin.

When the last person is tapped with the word penguin, the 2 involved students must waddle around the circle like a penguin as fast as they can, and try to reach the empty spot first. ~Submitted by Becce from Missouri Penguin/Seal Sliding Game I found pictures of a penguin and a seal sliding down a hill in a children's picture book. The penguin is sitting on his bottom, and the seal is laying on his tummy. I copied them and made them into cards. I took our large foam triangular shaped wedge and covered it with white paper, and then with smooth plastic (the kind you buy to put on the floor when you're painting). The kids choose one of the cards and tell me "I want to sit and slide like the penguin" or "I want to slide on my tummy like the seal". They then sit on a piece of cardboard made into a sled or just on the plastic and slide down. ~Submitted by Becce from Missouri Penguin Shuffle Males protect the eggs by balancing them on their feet. So I place a bean bag on the child's feet and they shuffle from one place to another without losing the bean bag "egg".

The Penguins had many poor seasons in their first 20 years. They had a good team in the mid-1970's, with players such as Peter Mahovlich, Pierre Larouche, and Jean Pronovost. Mario Lemieux helped turn the Penguins into a strong team. He won the Art Ross Trophy as NHL scoring champion six times, in 1988, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1996, and 1997; the Hart Trophy as most valuable player in 1988, 1993, and 1996; the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP in the playoffs in 1991 and 1992; and the goal scoring title in 1988, 1989, and 1996. Lemieux did all this even though he had many injuries. After their two Stanley Cups (which included a record-tying 11 wins in a row in the playoffs in 1992), the Penguins set the NHL record for most wins in a row, with 17 in 1992-93. They won the
