Penguins Marching Into the Classroom Welcome to the Penguin Science Education Page! Here you will find fun and educational activities to help students learn about many interesting aspects of Adelie penguin life, history and their relationship to climate change. Students can also send questions to the researchers who study penguins, check the nests of penguins as they look today, and (if the season is right) even receive a postcard from Antarctica!
Adelie Penguin's existence in the far south region of our planet is a fascinating subject. The average day in the life of a penguin is filled with adventure and drama, as they struggle to live and thrive in a challenging environment and changing climate. To see a map of the penguin colonies that live on and around Ross Island, just click in the image of the map to the right.
We hope you enjoy learning about these amazing seabirds!

Last updated on 2010/05/30 "Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen an angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more careful about what they say if they had." On this page: H ere are a couple of answers to Frequently Asked Questions about penguins I received from kids and penguin lovers. My answers apply mainly to the two kinds of penguins I know best, the Adelie penguins and the Emperor penguins. Just remember that although I've lived with penguins for more than a year, I'm no substitute for a real ornithologist... IANAO, I just impersonate one on the Internet ! Before you read the FAQ, have you read the FACTS about Antarctic penguins

51. Early Penguin Books - Penguin Paperbacks And King Penguins
Illustrates the history of early Penguin paperbacks, including Kings and illustrated classics.
http://www.spingal.plus.com/penguins/
The Design The minimalist look of the first Penguin books have become an icon of 20th century design. The highly functional, simple design and colours for the books were produced relatively ad hoc compared to budgets and market research assocaited with today's consumer products.
Penguin paperbacks were the brainchild of Allen Lane, a director with publishing house, The Bodley Head who distributed the first Penguin titles against considerable opposition from the other publishers. Lane's secretary, Joan Coles came up with the name Penguin after he had suggested a 'dignified but flippant' name, either an animal or bird. Edward Young from the Production department designed the first penguin logo. The first Penguins launched in 1935 were a selection of relatively 'safe' titles. There were a couple of detective novels of merit: one by Agatha Christie, the other by Dorothy L. Sayers. There was Gone to Earth by Mary Webb and Beverley Nichols's excursion into autobiography, Twenty-five; the evergreen William by E H. Young; Compton Mackenzie's Carnival; Eric Linklater's Poet's Pub; and Madame Claire by Susan Ertz. The two highlights of this first ten were Ernest Hemingway's vivid war novel, A Farewell to Arms, and Ariel, the biography of Shelley by Andre Maurois.
However the first ten Penguins were an immediate success, not only in the bookshops and on the bookstalls, but also in such mass-outlets as department and chain stores. In the next 18 months the list grew steadily on the basis of providing books for a variety of reading tastes and moods.

AQUI PARA ESPANOL NOTE: Our work, and the events portrayed on this page, feature in BBC TV's new series EXPLORE: Patagonia to the Pampas. "Morally and Constitutionally Indefensible" is how the Supreme Court described the Falkland Islands Government's attempts to silence reports that Falklands penguins are starving to death through over-fishing. The Governor, Chief Executive, Attorney General and members of Executive Council were declared to have acted illegally and immorally in their attempts to silence a marine biologist calling for penguin protection. Attempts to silence Mike Bingham's research into penguin declines included false arrests, fabrication of evidence by the police, death threats, and an order by the Governor to deport Bingham on the grounds that he had criticised the government for not protecting penguins. The Supreme Court over-turned Governor Pierce's ruling, declaring it a gross breach of human rights for improper motives, and ordered the Falkland Islands Government to pay all Bingham's costs. Read more about the Falkland Islands Government's attempts to silence our work.

The waterproof feathers of penguins are interlocking with small muscles. This allows them to be held close to the body (reducing air and buoyancy) for better swimming and slightly apart from the body (allowing an insulating layer of air to form) for greater warmth in cold climates, although they also possess a layer of blubber under the skin, which acts as a powerful insulating layer when in water. Feathers remain waterproof by constant preening during which an oily substance (also containing wax), produced by the uropygial gland at the base of the tail, is applied to the feathers. Penguins can dive to great depths, from 100 meters to up to 500 meters (

By Steve Reuland on September 15, 2005 4:46 PM 44 Comments The surprise hit nature documentary, March of the Penguins , has, according to the New York Times , been co-opted by social conservatives as a sort of affirmation of their views on sex and marriage. The article quotes conservative pundit Michael Medved as saying that the movie “passionately affirms traditional norms like monogamy, sacrifice and child rearing.” And there is another review, written by Andrew Coffin of the right-wing Christian World Magazine , claiming that the movie makes a strong case for intelligent design: That any one of these eggs survives is a remarkable feat—and, some might suppose, a strong case for intelligent design. Sadly, that’s the sum total of his argument. It would be interesting to know why having a high mortality rate makes a good argument for ID, but I guess that’ll have to remain a mystery. Maybe it’s because these penguins live in such harsh conditions that he can’t imagine how they could have adapted to the cold so suddenly. But given the fact that penguins live at the equator , it wouldn’t have been sudden.
