A lucky mother of four is the winner of a Mothers Day promotion held at the Penguin Market and she has her own children to thank. Ruth Ryan will be wined and dined after her children nominated her for the award. The lucky mum will be picked up in a luxury Hummer thanks to Hammer Road and driven to Ghost Rock Vineyard at Port Sorell for drinks, followed by dinner at Wild in Penguin. Ms. Ryan was nominated for the following reason: "I wish to nominate my Mother because Dad got her pregnant with number 5 and now she needs a break".

Fiordland crested penguin
Feeding time for the little penguins Taronga Zoo in Sydney has a colony of about 30 little penguins. The exhibit also includes 3 Fiordland crested penguins. Little penguins are the smallest species of penguin, and are about 25-30cm tall. They are also called fairy penguins. They are found in both Australia and New Zealand. Fiordland crested penguins breed in the rainforests along the coastlines of New Zealand's Fiordland Island and Stewart Island. The 3 penguins in Taronga Zoo were found washed up on a beach in Australia and quite badly injured after their long journey. They were taken to the Zoo for rehabilitation and have lived there ever since. Little blue penguin video Click on the above image to view a short video clip of little penguins swimming at Taronga Zoo. Thank you to Hedwig Reunes-Vanhaevre for her help with the video. My friend went to Melbourne Zoo (also in Australia) and took the above photo of little penguins

Here, you are watching the sub Antarctic zone, inhabited by four species of penguins. There may be as few as 6 hours of sunshine in June and up to 20 hours in December.
The Montréal Biodôme is housed in the former Olympic Velodrome, built for the 1976 Games. • What do they eat?
Rockhopper penguins eat a variety of squid and krill.
  • Highlights
Rockhopper penguins are one of the crested penguins. They also have red eyes. You can probably guess why they're called "rockhoppers." Yep, they jump from rock to rock. Rockhoppers have been described as "fearless" and "bad-tempered" by scientists. They use their sharp beaks to protect themselves and encourage "intruders" to leave nesting sites. There are an estimated 1,882,000 pairs of rockhopper penguins. The population is considered "vulnerable" by the World Conservation Union. At one time rockhoppers and other penguins were hunted for their oil. Today, all species are protected. Back to the Fishin' for Facts page
