Jun 9, 2009 "Contribute content like this. Start Here Pennsylvania Libraries are in an uproar over proposed budget cuts and slashing funding. The Senate and Governor Ed Rendell have proposed slashing funding and budget cuts to the Pennsylvania Libraries. Due to the economy, the Governor has proposed to slash the budget and funding from 5% to 50%. The Senate is proposing the more advanced and that is the 50% budget cuts. This budget cuts will do more harm then good. Libraries do a good service for the community and for this to happen or will happen, will hit many libraries hard.
Many libraries help the communities that they are in, doing various services and activities. If the proposed budget happens, most libraries will have to cut back on a lot of the services that are offered to the communities in which that they are apart of. Many libraries will have to stop giving some of their services that that they offer. Smaller libraries will be hit the hardest and will have to some drastic measures. Many smaller libraries will have to either reduce their hours, if they have not done so already, or close their doors all together. Other medium sized libraries will have to reduce their hours, lay off staff, reduce their services that they offer or stop them all together.
The communities in which there are libraries are using the libraries more frequently now than they were before. People come into the libraries to use the services that are offered. People use computers to search for a job or put in a claim for unemployment. Many people use the services like Interlibrary loan which is help in getting the books from other libraries if the local one does not have it. People head to the library to do research, do homework, find that particular book that they are unable to afford, get movies, there is story programs for the children and young adults, and so much more. If the proposed budget goes through, these services will be either reduced or stopped because the budget does not allow the monies usually given to these services.

Pennsylvania Libraries and the Budget Impasse

Sep 28, 2009 "Contribute content like this. Start Here The state of Pennsylvania is facing its toughest challenge yet. It is a another year and another budget that has not been met on time in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is the only state in the continental United States that has not as yet passed a budget. The state of Pennsylvania is experiencing many problems with agencies and libraries feeling the pinch of not having a budget. Many libraries throughout the state have started a campaign with asking for the help of the patrons in contacting their local representative, senator and so forth. The state library in Harrisburg has warned many people that if a budget is not passed soon, cuts will be in the near future. There is also bills on the table that want to cut funding to the services that libraries receive in order to balance the budget. There are other bills on the table that want to cut services that help people in the state and many people are up in arms over this. The budget does not balance and the state has been without a balanced budget for over three months.
The state of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Libraries are waiting with baited breath to see what the new budget that is being worked on, but has not been passed as yet, will be. The libraries are facing cuts in funding from thirty five percent up to seventy five percent. Due to this budget impasse, Philadelphia, itself, faced a huge problem and was threatening to close services and also close the libraries. Philadelphia managed to figure it all out and with help, they are able to keep their town going. Many other cities and counties are facing a similar problem and they are not sure what to do to keep from stopping services, closing, or even cutting jobs.

Innovation from the University of Pennsylvania Libraries
June 28, 2010 Category: Author: Joan Starr This presented an opportunity to expose a wide variety of library staff to the process of digital projects development, and to start having digital library efforts perceived as a library-wide endeavor. It also offered a chance for individual staff members to pick up new skills and grow professionally. In this way, Delphine estimates that over 50 people from the library have had direct experience with the DLA and with digital library projects in the past 3 years. And some of these people have had extended and exten sive experience. This is changing their effective skill set. Could this model be adapted for use in your environment? What differences might it make? Tags: Behind the Scenes innovation project management workflow
