24. Snapshot: One Day In The Life Of Pennsylvania Libraries
179,702 people visited libraries across Pennsylvania on one day. That is more than attended both the Eagles and Steelers game last weekend or visited Hershey Park.

179,702 people visited libraries across Pennsylvania on one day. That is more than attended both the Eagles and Steelers game last weekend or visited Hershey Park. The Pennsylvania Library Association and Commonwealth Libraries launched a project called Snapshot PA: One Day in the Life of Pennsylvania Libraries- October 28, 2009. Its purpose? To capture the impact that Pennsylvania libraries have on their communities on a typical day. Librarians from all types of libraries, public and academic libraries, school and special libraries, hospital libraries and government libraries; from the tiniest facility to the largest county systems participated. We created a quick survey to capture the daily activities of libraries across the state. Over 500 libraries responded. The numbers are impressive. 179,702 people walked through our libraries’ doors, 208,171 materials were circulated, and librarians answered 22,487 reference questions. But numbers don’t tell the whole story. Library patrons, young and old, shared their personal experiences during their visits. "I really appreciate the library and all it offers the community. It is a great resource, full of opportunities for learning! My son loves it too."- Angie Zimmerman, Reading.

Wharton Esherick and the Birth of the American Modern
2010 Exhibition Grant
The University of Pennsylvania Libraries has expanded its curatorial mission in recent years to present long-running, thoroughly researched exhibitions that draw on its rich archives to approach a wide range of artworks, and complement the materials in its collection. Wharton Esherick and the Birth of the American Modern focuses on the life and work of Philadelphia native Wharton Esherick (1887–1970), whose distinctive synthesis of art, theater, dance and design forged an early and compelling example of American Modernism. Esherick has been called “the dean of American craftsmen,” an artist for whom furniture was a form of sculpture, and who forged a link between the Arts and Crafts movement and the resurgent interest in furniture making following World War II. The exhibit will be the first major examination of Esherick’s work and artistic development in over fifty years, and the Penn Libraries will collaborate with the Wharton Esherick Museum and the Architectural Archives of the University of Pennsylvania, going beyond the scope of past projects and setting the stage for future endeavors. The Hedgerow Theater will also stage a revival of The Case of Clyde Griffiths , based on the novel An American Tragedy , by Esherick’s friend Theodore Dreiser, which first premiered at Hedgerow in 1935. A symposium of visiting scholars is planned for the discussion of the exhibition, as well as a series of gallery talks, lectures, and workshops in various venues.
