Percussion Instruments The Percussion family is probably the oldest section within the orchestra. It is a wide diverse group of instruments which are played in a number of different ways. Of these the Drum is one of the earliest and comes in all shapes and sizes throughout the world. The family includes any instrument that can be struck, beaten with a stick/hammer, scraped or shaken. The size of the instruments varies hugely. On one hand we have the complex Piano with 88 keys, and on the other we have a Triangle which is a made of a simple steel rod and hit with another piece of rod. Shaken instruments like the Tambourine or Rattle are very easy to use and tend to be more common in an orchestra than a scraped instrument.
The Cymbals
Cymbals are thin metal discs which are clashed together or beaten with a soft drumstick to make a sound. They come in varying sizes from small finger cymbals to very large deafening ones.
The Drum
The drum is made from having a skin sometimes plastic stretched over a wooden,or metal frame. It comes in all different shapes and sizes and is played throughout the world. Several of the popular drums are the Snare, Bass, Timpani, and Congo drums. Their characteristics are as follows:
  • Snare Drum
This is a cylindrical drum with a skin stretched across the top and wires or strings strung across the bottom. When the drum is struck it is the noise made from the strings which gives it it's special sound.

Examples
Percussion in jazz is virtually synonymous with the drum set, which is made of a variety of drums and cymbals: In addition to the drum set, it is not unusual to see congas, timbales, tambourines, triangles, or other types of percussion instruments in jazz as well:
Roles
Note that, while piano, vibraphone, and marimba are technically considered percussion instruments, they are not usually treated as such when we discuss the role of percussion in jazz. The instruments we are talking about here are generally limited in pitch and unable to play melody or harmony. Their main function is to accompany the other musicians with rhythmic support. Percussionists are considered members of the rhythm section. In most cases, they play a regular pattern, with improvised variations. For example, in bebop and similar styles, here is how a drummer would typically play:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search "Percussion" redirects here. For other uses, see Percussion (disambiguation) A percussion instrument is any object which produces a sound when hit with an implement, shaken, rubbed, scraped, or by any other action which sets the object into vibration. The term usually applies to an object used in a rhythmic context or with musical intent. The word "percussion" has evolved from Latin terms: "percussio" (which translates as "to beat, strike" in the musical sense, rather than the violent action), and "percussus" (which is a noun meaning "a beating"). As a noun in contemporary English it is described in Wiktionary as "the collision of two bodies to produce a sound". The usage of the term is not unique to music but has application in medicine and weaponry, as in percussion cap , but all known and common uses of the word, "percussion", appear to share a similar lineage beginning with the original Latin: "percussus". In a musical context then, the term "percussion instruments" may have been coined originally to describe a family of instruments including drums, rattles, metal plates, or wooden blocks which musicians would beat or strike (as in a collision) to produce sound. TEMPLE UNIVERSITY CONTACT US SEARCH CAREERS ... Photos The Percussion Program has a substantial and varied inventory of professional quality and hand selected instruments which need to be cared for and well maintained. Matriculated students in the percussion program have the privilege and joy of performing on these instruments and share in the responsibility for keeping them in good condition. The instruments are secured and stored in three areas. The most commonly needed equipment is found in the cabinets at the back of the rehearsal hall and in the center cabinet in the percussion studio. Students may obtain a key to these cabinets by remitting a $5.00, refundable key deposit. This deposit is returned at the time the key is returned (any loss of instruments or equipment will be deducted from the key deposit fund). Special equipment (e.g. exotic instruments) is stored in other locations. Requests for access to these instruments may be made to the Section Leader, the Equipment Manager, or the Program Director. Students should feel free to use the instruments. They should treat them with respect, as if they were their own. The instruments should be played properly and responsibly. Instruments should always be returned to the proper storage cabinet.
