Perennial Gardening Made Easy
Don't be intimidated by the thought of perennial gardening. The secret to easy, successful perennial gardening is thorough preparation of your site and the proper selection of plants. Perennial gardening, as with any type of gardening, also requires careful planning and forethought and in order to accomplish this task; try sketching out your ideas on paper first. After you develop a perennial gardening scheme, examine the landscape carefully to find the most ideal location for your perennial bed. Always consider factors such as light (sun or shade) and soil (wet or dry/fertile or poor) when you are choosing a site. Once the location has been established, you can begin working the soil. Generally, the best time to prepare your perennial beds is in the fall when the soil is more manageable. It is important that the soil be easy to work with and rich in organic content. To achieve this, amend the soil with compost. Using newspaper beneath the topsoil can work wonders as well. Building up the soil into raised beds is another efficient way to achieve success with perennial gardening.
Choosing and Caring for Perennial Plants
Planting usually takes place in the spring, giving you the entire winter season to further plan out your beds and select plants. Becoming familiar with plants that are suitable to your particular area is another important element of perennial gardening.

Perennial gardening
Perennials are often used as the “backbone” of the flower garden. This is because most perennials flower over many seasons in their lifetime. Some have even adapted to survive extreme environmental conditions and with their roots protected below ground in the deep soil, they are even tolerant of wildfires. The perennial garden can save time and money for the gardener because plants last a long time. Once you decide on a design for your perennial garden and plant it - all you have to do is maintain it year to year. In warmer climates, many perennials grow continuously throughout the year, and some perennial evergreen species retain their foliage all year long. However, this is not to say that a perennial garden requires no maintenance at all in comparison to an annual garden, because perennials still need tender loving care that includes weeding, watering and pruning.

Perennial Gardening
The Perennial Gardening Experience
The art of perennial gardening like anything else requires knowledge and skill. It is learned from research complimented by experience. There are so many aspects of perennial gardening that learning how to do it right is simply not an overnight event. So, how do you learn what to do so your garden can bloom year after year with a minimum amount of replanting? To begin with go to a library or search the net. Try to learn what plants are hardy. Learn which flowers are easier to cultivate. Look at pictures to discover which ones you find most attractive. Then narrow it down to what flowers in what colors you want to use when starting your perennial gardening efforts. This may seem like a lot of work, but perennial gardening can be very satisfying if done properly. As can the outcome. Once you’ve decided what you want to plant you’ll need to check your garden shed to see if you have the required supplies to begin your perennial gardening. First thing you require is a round edged shovel to allow easy digging when planting. Then you’ll have weeding to do. For this you’ll need a good rake, a hoe, and garden shears. It’s important when doing your perennial gardening to make sure the plants do not wind up suffocated by weeds. Then you’ll want either a watering can, if the area you planted isn’t too big, or a long hose if it’s a good sized plot. Once you have your tools you can begin the project of perennial gardening. Plant your bulbs evenly spaced so that the do not overcrowd each other. Overcrowding will not produce nice flowers. You can grow your perennials from seed if that‘s your preference but be sure that the seeds are not planted too close together or they will not come up right either. The third alternative in perennial gardening is to buy plants that have already been potted. The big advantage to this is that you get to see what the colors look like and how the flowers look before you plant them. It helps you know if this is truly what you want. That may be a real bonus for someone who is new to planting perennial flowers.

Fall was all about getting the gardens cutback and working my through my checklist of garden chores; all that's left to do is pruning. Fall-early winter is spent cutting back the herbaceous perennials. A well designed winter landscape does not depend on faded perennials. With thousands of perennials in over a dozen gardens, I started cutting back the herbaceous perennials (plants whose upper growth dies back through the winter months while the roots are dormant) in early October. Shrubs along with evergreen and deciduous trees provide plenty of interest and structure in the landscape throughout the changing seasons. Pruning back perennials now rather than waiting until spring has several advantages. First, spring growth will be hardier and healthier than growth that would otherwise have to force its way through dead, matted foliage or worse, be damaged by even the gentle removing of dead foliage by hand or rake next spring. Second, removing foliage now will eliminate potential breeding havens for pests to overwinter, and third, aesthetically the garden is "winterized" leaving no dead remains to clutter the landscape.

Year-Round Color Perennial Gardening Tips
Perennial gardening is a favorite of many flower lovers because the plants reappear year after year and they require less maintenance than other flowers.
The garden can be color-enhanced by adding annual flowers to it. Everyone likes year-round color in their gardens. In the wintertime, it is understandable for backyard landscaping to fade out; however, by using the following perennial plants , annuals and evergreen trees and bushes, you can assure that your yard will have color in all four seasons.
For spring color…
Plant early spring bloomers mixed with mid and late spring bloomers.
  • Early spring bloomers include hyacinths, daffodils and tulips. Remember, if planting these from flower bulbs they need to actually be planted in the fall. Bloodroot and Lenten roses are also early spring bloomers. Mid-spring favorites include the white wakerobin, cowslips and Bethlehem sage. Snowdrops, bluebells and bleeding hearts are late spring bloomers.
For summer color…
Plant heat tolerant flowers such as coneflowers, black-eyed Susan
