Abstract
This paper describes a Perl module Lingua::Romana::Perligata that makes it possible to write Perl programs in Latin. A plausible rationale for wanting to do such a thing is provided, along with a comprehensive overview of the syntax and semantics of Latinized Perl. The paper also explains the special source filtering and parsing techniques required to efficiently interpret a programming language in which the syntax is (largely) non-positional.
Introduction
Compared to other languages (both modern and ancient), English has a comparatively weak lexical structure. Much of the grammatical load of an English sentence is carried by positional cues. A statement such as ``The boy gave the dog the food'' only makes sense because of the convention that the subject precedes the verb, which precedes the indirect object, which precedes the direct object. Changing the order ``The food gave the boy the dog'' changes the meaning. Most programming languages use similar positional grammatical cues. The operation

Why Learn Perl Programming?
(Philip Schrodt, from Political Science 907, November 2000) Over the past couple of weeks, I've been experimenting with the computer language Perl ("Practical Extraction and Report Language"), which is designed specifically for text processing. Perl has only been widely available for about five years, but in that time has become very popular. Because it is optimized for text processing, programs that do useful things can be very short. For example, the following program counts the number of "22" WEIS codes in an event data file named CASIA.EVT: $ka=0;
open (INFILE, "CASIA.EVT");
With a few more lines, this can be extended to count all 2-digit WEIS categories $evtnum= 1;
open (INFILE, "CASIA.ALL.EVT.3CODE");
$ka=0;
$event = sprintf("%02d",$evtnum);
close INFILE;
++$evtnum;
In a more complicated application, I wrote a text filter for NEXIS in about 150 lines of Perl; comparable filters in C and Pascal required about 1000 lines of code. Program modifications involving recognition of new patterns usually require only an additional line or two of code.

    Perl Design Patterns, Part 2
    By Phil Crow on August 7, 2003 12:00 AM This is the second in a series of articles which form one Perl programmer's response to the book, Design Patterns (also known as the Gang of Four book or simply as GoF, because four authors wrote it). As I showed in the first article , Perl provides the best patterns in its core and many others are modules which ship with Perl or are available from CPAN. There I considered Iterator ( foreach ), Decorator (pipes and list filters), Flyweight ( Memoize.pm ), and Singleton (bless an object in a BEGIN block). People into patterns often talk about how knowing patterns makes describing designs easier. The parenthetical comments in the last sentence show how Perl takes this to new heights by including the patterns internally. This article continues my treatment by considering patterns which rely on data containers and/or code references (which are also called callbacks). Before showing the patterns let me explain these terms.
    Data Containers
    I use data containers to mean any reference that holds a data structure. Arrays and hashes are common data containers, but hashes of lists of hashes storing things are more interesting. Careful use of these structure containers can often eliminate the need for objects.

    Course Description
    Perl is a popular and powerful language that can be applied to a wide range of data processing problems. Students will learn the basic features of Perl and gain experience in writing typical applications that do text processing, Web scraping, financial calculations, data validation, file management, word-frequency analyses, inter-process communication, simple databases, and more. The 3.5 day version called Perl Programming, plus Extended Hands-On is designed to provide additional supervised lab-time for the benefit of groups having less programming experience, or a special need to delve more deeply into specific aspects of Perl. This version of the course is offered only in on-site classes.

    Perl Programming  a 4-day course
    Synopsis
    This is our main Perl training course. It covers general Perl programming together with system and database interaction. The basic four-day course is a grounding in using the Perl programming language as a successful Perl programmer and/or system administrator.
    Suitable for
    Delegates have usually encountered some Perl before, but may not always have found it easy to learn or use. The course is for developers who want to learn the Perl way of doing things. It emphasizes taking advantage of Perl's native productivity tools and techniques, rather than trying to make do with other language's idioms. The course covers the fundamentals of Perl from the beginning, as we have found that a good understanding of how and why Perl does things in particular ways helps everyone to learn more effectively; even those who have been programming in Perl for a couple of years.

    Overview of Perl Programming
    Perl is a dynamic programming language very similar to C in many respects. It is used most widely in system administration, web site development (especially on the GUI side), and networking tasks. It is known to be a very straight-forward, easy to use programming language. Because perl is used extensively in web development, it is a very popular language. Many companies, both large and small, use perl to write CGI scripts. These are the scripts that allow web applications to interact with the server.
    History of Perl Programming
    Learning Perl Programming
    Perl is known as a relatively easy language to learn and to use. A knowledge of perl would be very useful for System Administrators (especially Unix and Unix-like operating systems) Network Administrators and would be a necessity for many Web Developers. Depending on your current fluency with programming languages, you may want to take a class at a local community college or university, or utilize online tutorials or distance learning courses. Some examples of the latter:
