Seminar Abstract
Perl Programming
This seminar is a practical discussion of the Perl programming language (Practical Extraction and Report Language). Perl is a portable language that builds on grep, awk, sed, C, and other languages to provide a tool that allows the quick creation of complex programs. Its primary advantage over a tools like grep or awk is that is can handle binary files (in addition to normal text files). The emphasis is on topics related to coding including prototyping, data extraction, and use as a shell scripting language. Version 5 and cgi-bin scripting (used with the World Wide Web) are also covered.
Topics to be covered include:
  • Data types
  • Langauge Syntax
    • Operators (arithmetic and relational)
    • Selection (if/switch)
    • Looping (for, while, do while)
  • Advanced Data Types
  • File Access
  • Libraries
    • Perl libraries
    • C run-time libraries
    • Inter-process communication and Remote procedure calls
  • Standards
  • Sources
The goal of this seminar is to allow the attendee to understand and utilize Perl. Various issues involving code portability and understandability will also be considered.
Prerequisites of Attendees:
Attendees should be familiar with 3GL programming or shell scripting (Bourne, Korn, BASH, etc.). Knowledge of awk, grep, and sed are helpful but not required. The topics are not environment specific, so UNIX experience is not required, but may be helpful.

Perl Programming
Yes, we are Perl programmers. The granddaddy of most web development languages, Perl is very much in use today. Perl programming has never gone out of style, because it is such a flexible, efficient way to build web applications. Why is Perl programming so great? Here are a few reasons:
  • It's everywhere (seriously, it's hard to find a web server *not* running Perl) No licensing fees Complete integration with Apache web server via mod_perl Because Perl can be compiled, there's almost nothing faster Wide support within the Open Source development community Numerous libraries of existing code that make development even faster
On that last note it's been estimated that the dollar value of developer contributions to Perl measures in the millions - and yet it's free to use!
Why Metal Toad Media?
Metal Toad Media has the Perl programming skill to get your project completed on-time and on-budget. We've been in the web development space for over 10 years. We've worked with everyone from the merchant around the corner to Fortune 500 companies - and we can help you.

  • You: TBD Josh Barratt: AnyEvent Perl Asynchronous Programming
    Abstract:
Event driven programming has been a powerful paradigm for years, but it's emerging as an increasingly important way to work. Making events easy is part of what has made node.js so exciting, and is possible in Python with Eventlet and Ruby with EventMachine. Perl's answer to this is very mature and flexible: AnyEvent. As well as an introduction to the module, how to use it, and some of the other modules in the "family", we'll cover some before/after examples of synchronous code made asynchronous.

The Gang-of-Four Design Patterns book had a huge impact on programming methodologies in the Java and C++ communities, but what do Design Patterns have to say to Perl programmers? Phil Crow examines how some popular patterns fit in to Perl programming.

    Perl Design Patterns
By Phil Crow on June 13, 2003 12:00 AM
    Introduction
In 1995, Design Patterns was published, and during the intervening years, it has had a great influence on how many developers write software. In this series of articles, I present my take on how the Design Patterns book (the so-called Gang of Four book, which I will call GoF) and its philosophy applies to Perl. While Perl is an OO language you could code the examples from GoF directly in Perl many of the problems the GoF is trying to solve are better solved in Perl-specific ways, using techniques not open to Java developers or those C++ developers who insist on using only objects. Even if developers in other languages are willing to consider procedural approaches, they can't, for instance, use Perl's immensely powerful built-in pattern support. Though these articles are self-contained, you will get more out of them if you are familiar with the GoF book (or better yet have it open on your desk while you read). If you don't have the book, then try searching the Web - many people talk about these patterns. Since the Web and the book have diagrams of the object versions of the patterns, I will not reproduce those here, but can direct you to this fine site I will show you how to implement the highest value patterns in Perl, most often by using Perl's rich core language. I even include some objects.

The ODP dumps have a history of being rather dirty files containing a wide assortment of errors and non-standard usage of XML and RDF syntax. I've recently started working with ODP to try to improve the quality of the data dumps and this has resulted in the creation of the related code as well as a lengthy Data Dump ToDo List on which I try to keep track of the various bugs and improvement requests related to the ODP dumps. Another source of information that ODP data dump experimenters may find useful is Amir Salihefendic's data dump tag documentation The programs below are intended for developers and probably won't be very useful to you if your goal is to put ODP data on your website. If you're looking for a complete solution for using ODP data on your website, I recommend having a look at the minimoz package written by Andreas Steinmetz. Minimoz parses ODP data, stores it in an SQL database, and generates an ODP-like template-based website using the data. It's written in C and is Free Software licensed under the GNU GPL.
