Geography of Peru
Peru is divided into three regions. Although this simple division is a fair portrait of Peru's geography, the reality is much richer and far more complex: in Peru nature appears to have taken on characteristics which have turned its mountains, plains, jungles and valleys into unique habitats. An extraordinary variety of eco-systems shelters a wide diversity of plants and animals. The Highlands The Highlands of Peru are a mountainous area dominated by the Andes, where Mount Huascaran soars to 6,768 meters. In the Peruvian highlands, there are two well-defined seasons: the dry season (from April to October), marked by sunny days, cold nights and the lack of rain (the ideal time for visiting); and the rainy season (November to March), when there are frequent rain showers. The Coast The coast of Peru features deserts, beautiful beaches and fertile valleys. The Peruvian coastline is formed by a long snaking desert hemmed in between the sea and the mountains. The Andes to the east and the cold Humboldt Current that runs along the coast are what make this area so arid. From the Sechura desert to the Nazca plains and the Atacama Desert, the dry coastal terrain is occasionally split by valleys covered by a thick layer of cloud and drizzle in the winter.

The Andes are by no means the only region to visit in Peru. Also of great interest is Peru's narrow, lowland coastal region, a northern extension of the Atacama Desert. Although the Atacama is generally known as the most arid region on the planet, the climate along Peru's shores is made cooler and less dry by La Garuùa, a dense fog created by the collision of the frigid waters of the Humboldt Current with the heated sands of the Atacama. Lima, Trujillo, and Chiclayo, three of Peru's major population centres, are located along this coastal desert. Peru's third great region is the dense forest that surrounds the headwaters of the Amazon beneath the eastern slopes of the Andes. This part of the country is so inaccessible that only the most adventurous and intrepid travelers should attempt to penetrate its mysterious emerald depths. In fact, the region's capital of Iquitos, a city of 400,000, is accessible only by air or by boat up the Amazon. Peru's climate varies considerably by region, although January through March tends everywhere to be the wet season. The coastal areas, which are quite hot and humid during those months, are cooled during the rest of the year by La Garuùa. The fog doesn't penetrate very far inland, however, and the western side of the Andes are very clear, warm, and dry for the greater part of the year. As one moves up into the mountains, night-time temperatures become considerably colder. The eastern slope of the Andes, like the Amazon basin, experiences very heavy rainfall during the wet season, which extends from January all the way through April.

It lies on the west coast of Peru, along the Pacific Ocean. The capital of Peru is a big city named Lima. The land of Peru is very beautiful. But some places in Peru are very dangerous and even a little scary. There are the Andes Mountains in Peru. These are some of the most beautiful mountains in the world. It is also the longest mountain chain in the world. The Andes stretch 7,000 km from end to end. Many of the Andes Mountains are taller than 4,000 m. They are very rugged mountains. The straight sides of many of these mountains can even look a little scary especially if you are afraid of heights! High in the Andes Mountains is one of Peru's most famous cities. But this city hasn't been lived in for hundreds of years. Explorers found this ancient city in 1911. It is called Machu Picchu. It is a huge fortress made out of stone. It sits on top of very high places in the Andes Mountains.

Overall Look at the Geography of Peru
Peru is a country of varied climate because the influence of the following phenomena: To visualize Peru geography, imagine a sheet of paper crumpled lengthwise down the middle from top to bottom, smooth on both sides That might describe basic Peru geography. On this page:
  • Overall Look Some Basic Facts Three Major Regions
The Coast ... Like a flat sheet of paper, many milenia ago, the land forming the current geography
of Peru apparently had been a vast plain. Then, geological forces compressing the two sides towards the middle produced the upward crumpling of the central spine.
These geological processes resulted in what is called the Cordillera of the Andes, that central spinal column that runs down the middle of the Andean countries from north to south.
This central spine of mountain highland separates the two flat areas of Peru geography: the coastal zone to the west and the jungle zone to the east.
These three regions or zones with their distinctive and varied altitudes and climates provide a key to the identity of Peru as a whole as well as the challenges presented to living in such a highly complex and varied territory.

I love saying I went to Peru... There's a bit of mystery to it. Not the same as 'Went down to the shore for a week.' I say 'Well, I was in Peru, went to the Amazon Rainforest and stayed in a cool jungle camp with thatched huts and hammocks in front, macaws and parrots flying free, tarantulas in the trees nearby. The jungle was full of boas, anaconda, monkeys and of course lizards of all sizes.' I organized the trip with my new blended family by signing up with Active South America, a really first-rate tour company. Since there were only five of us we were matched with another family of our size.
