History Ancient Peruvian textile. Enlarge image Peru is best known as the heart of the Inca Empire, but it was home to many diverse cultures long before the Incas arrived. Although hunter gatherers lived in Peru as long ago as the eighth millennium BC, there is little evidence of organized village life until about 2500 BC. A change in climate in the coastal regions prompted Peru's early inhabitants to move toward the more fertile interior river valleys. For the next 1500 years, Peruvian civilization developed into a number of organized cultures, including the Chavěn and the Sechěn. The Chavěn are known for their striking figurative idols of animals (the jaguar in particular). The Sechěn are noted more for their military supremacy than for their cultural achievements. The decline of the Chavěn and Sechěn cultures around the 5 th century BC gave rise to a number of distinctive regional cultures.

Facts About Peru History, Geography, Culture, People, Art, Climate and much more!
What do you know about Peru history? I’m willing to bet that you may know a little about the Inca or maybe even the Spanish conquistadors but not much beyond that. When did these people live and how did their cultures develop? Peru History is one of the world's greatest when it comes to ancient civilizations. Their cultural, archeological and unique heritage impress visitors from all over the world. I was lucky enough to live in Peru for 20 years and would love to share with you all the experiences and beautiful places I discovered during that time as well as my passion for Peru history and culture. First, let me talk you through a few basic facts: Peru is, of course, located in South America and is bordered by Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil and Bolivia to the east, Chile to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The diversity of its regions (coast, highlands and jungle) makes Peru a unique country. It has a population of more than 23 million people, mainly descendents of Spanish and Inca cultures. The most common language is Spanish. Quechua and Aymara are spoken by a minority of locals. But enough with the basic stuff; let’s get to something a little more substantial about

Peru History Overview
Early Peru History
At the same time that Troy was founded and the Sumerians were building their civilizations, the Norte Chico civilization was rising in Peru. This civilization is the oldest known in the Americas and reigned from the 30th century and 18th century BC.
While the Egyptians were building the pyramids at Giza, the Norte Chico civilization was making architectural advancements of their own. These achievements would later be perfected by the Inca and cause wonder in the modern world. As Peru history marches on we see the rise of the largest empire in pre-Columbian America; the Inca Empire. While the Renaissance was taking hold in Europe, the Inca were building Macchu Picchu . That single architectural achievement would captivate the modern world when it was discovered in 1911 and became one of the new wonders of the world.
The arrival of Spain
Once again, time moves forward and in 1531 the Spanish conquistadors set foot on Inca soil. In the next year Francisco Pizarro and his brothers would christen that soil and by 1535, Lima would be founded. The Spanish conquest of the Inca, a civilization that ruled for around 300 years, would be brutally swift and usher in a new era in Peru’s history.

Peru, History
Evidence of settlement in Peru dates back thousands of years but, except for some scattered ruins, little is known of these early peoples. In about 1250 BC groups such as the Chavín, Chimú, Nazca, and Tiahuanaco migrated into the region from the north. The Chimú built the city of Chan Chan about AD 1000, ruins of which remain today. The Inca , a South American people, built one of the largest and wealthiest empires in the western hemisphere beginning in the mid-1400s. Located on the western coast of South America, the empire extended more than 4000 km (more than 2500 mi) and included regions of present-day Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. The city of Cuzco, situated in southern Peru, served as the Inca capital.

    HISTORY
The history of Peru goes back to some 20 000 years B.C. when the territory began to be populated with groups of hunters and gatherers. Theories differ in regard to the true origin of the American man. Is the American culture native, or did it result from an Asian migration? It would seem that the second hypothesis is contrary to many of the anthropological and archaeological tests, as well as an examination of legends and traditions.
For Dr. Julio C.Tello, one of the most preeminent Peruvian archaeologists, the Chavin culture was the most ancient in Peru, existing between 1000 to 250 B.C. Their principal center has been located in Chavin de Huantar, in the Ancash region. From here the people of South America developed a diverse culture, with architectural, economic and religious facets.
    THE INCAS
Going back to approximately 1200 A.D, the Inca Empire was the strongest in South America, at a similar time as the Maya and Aztec peoples. The principal centre of the Inca culture was the city of Cusco, from where the Incas governed more than 40, 000 kilometers of trails and hundreds of conquered towns.

From the advanced Inca Empire to its overthrow by Spanish forces, the country of Peru has seen many changes throughout its history. And all of this is in one of the most harsh and inhospitable environments in the world. One of these small groups was the Incas of Cusco, which in the 13th century began to grow. The Incas slowly included their neighbors into their fold until the 15th century. It was under the rule of the great Inca emperor, Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui, when the Incas grew tremendously. Under Pachacuti and his son, Topa, the Incas came to rule almost a third of all of South America.

      Peru History
The first inhabitants of Peru were nomadic hunter-gatherers who lived in caves in Peru's coastal regions. The oldest site, Pikimachay cave, dates from 12,000 BC. Crops such as cotton, beans, squash and pepper chillis were planted around 4000 BC; later, advanced cultures such as the Chavn introduced weaving, agriculture and religion to the country. Around 300 BC, the Chavn inexplicably disappeared, but over the centuries several other cultures - including the Salinar, Nazca, Paracas Necropolis and Wari (Huari) - became locally important. By the early 15th century, the Inca empire had control of much of the area, even extending its influence into Colombia and Chile. Between 1526-28, the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro explored Peru's coastal regions and, drawn by the riches of the Inca empire, returned to Spain to raise money and recruit men for another expedition to the country. Return he did, marching into Cajamarca, in northern Peru, before capturing, ransoming and executing the Inca emperor Atahualpa in 1533. Pizarro subsequently founded the city of Lima in 1535 but was assassinated six years later. The rebellion of the last Inca leader, Manco Inca, ended ingloriously with his beheading in 1572.
