A pesticide may be a chemical substance, biological agent (such as a virus or bacterium), antimicrobial, disinfectant or device used against any pest . Pests include insects , plant pathogens , weeds, molluscs birds mammals fish , nematodes ( roundworms ), and microbes that destroy property, spread disease or are a vector for disease or cause a nuisance. Although there are benefits to the use of pesticides, there are also drawbacks, such as potential toxicity to humans and other animals. According to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, 10 of the 12 most dangerous and persistent organic chemicals are pesticides.

FAO has defined the term of pesticide as:
any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying or controlling any pest, including vectors of human or animal disease, unwanted species of plants or animals causing harm during or otherwise interfering with the production, processing, storage, transport or marketing of food, agricultural commodities, wood and wood products or animal feedstuffs, or substances which may be administered to animals for the control of insects, arachnids or other pests in or on their bodies. The term includes substances intended for use as a plant growth regulator, defoliant, desiccant or agent for thinning fruit or preventing the premature fall of fruit. Also used as substances applied to crops either before or after harvest to protect the commodity from deterioration during storage and transport.

Direct Kill
Fine mists of herbicides can drift to nearby crops or landscape plants and kill them. Bees and other pollinators can be killed if a crop is treated with a pesticide when they are in the field. The natural enemies of pest insects can also be killed by pesticides. Life in streams or ponds can be wiped out by accidental spraying of ditches and waterways, runoff from sprayed fields, and careless container disposal. If more than one pesticide will control the pest, choose the one that is the least hazardous to the environment and most useful for the situation. To protect beneficial insects, avoid excessive use of insecticides - spray only when crop and pest populations require. Protecting Insect Pollinators
Gardeners should give special consideration to protecting insect pollinators, such as the honey bee, from insecticide poisoning. Insecticides highly toxic to bees have restricted application times when being applied to crops frequented by honey bees. Bees are not active in late evening and early morning. Do not apply insecticides when temperatures are unusually low because residues will remain toxic much longer.

Quick Resources Before a pesticide can be used in the United States, EPA conducts ecological risk assessments to determine what risks are posed by a pesticide and whether changes to the use or proposed use of that pesticide are necessary to protect the environment. A pesticide applicant is required by EPA to conduct and submit a wide range of environmental laboratory and field studies. These studies examine:
  • the ecological effects or toxicity of a pesticide and its breakdown products (degradation products) to various terrestrial and aquatic animals and plants and the chemical fate and transport of a pesticide (how it behaves and where it goes) in soil, air, and water resources.

  • Research performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Environmental Sciences Division revealed that hypoxia, a fatal condition that affects thousands of fish, shrimp, and shellfish in the Gulf of Mexico each year, is partly the result of fertilizer run-off from agricultural activities in the Mississippi basin. The run-off, along with the temperature differentials created when the warm water from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers come into contact with the cold Gulf waters, forms a deadly combination whereby algae grows, dies, decomposes and uses up the oxygen the aforementioned organisms need for survival. To combat this problem, and reduce phosphorus production, which is also seen as a contributing factor in the rise of hypoxia, researchers have proposed increasing the use of environmentally sustainable biofuel, improving nutrient management, and restoring wetlands in the affected areas.

Harmful pesticides found in everyday food products
Mercer Island children tested in yearlong study
By ANDREW SCHNEIDER P-I SENIOR CORRESPONDENT Government promises to rid the nation's food supply of brain-damaging pesticides aren't doing the job, according to the results of a yearlong study that carefully monitored the diets of a group of local children. The peer-reviewed study found that the urine and saliva of children eating a variety of conventional foods from area groceries contained biological markers of organophosphates, the family of pesticides spawned by the creation of nerve gas agents in World War II. When the same children ate organic fruits, vegetables and juices, signs of pesticides were not found.

Pesticides: Environment committee supports better protection against dangerous pesticides
The European parliament's environment committee today adopted a report on pesticides by German Green MEP Hiltrud Breyer . She commented: "The European parliament environment committee has today supported higher standards for protection of human health and the environment. Its vote will lead to a more innovative and competitive European chemical industry in the field of pesticides. The committee has set a strong negotiating position for upcoming discussions with Council and the European Commission by strengthening the cut-off criteria. I welcome that MEPs voted to prohibit substances deemed to be of significant risk to the development of the immune or nervous system. They have also insisted on better protection for bees, which play a crucial role in food production. It is a positive step that environment committee members have again rejected zonal authorisation for pesticide products, supported by the Commission and Council. As rapporteur I support harmonised rules for product authorisation but this must not be at the expense of EU member states. It is highly regrettable that many representatives of farmer's organisations uncritically accepted grossly exaggerated industry figures. Farmers and their families will benefit from improved EU legislation most of all since they are at greatest risk of exposure to the harmful effects of toxic pesticides. This legislation would not mean crop loss for farmers."
