Description:
An antiviral acyclic guanine nucleoside analog that acts by inhibiting viral DNA synthesis. Selective toxicity is obtained at multiple steps, including the monophosphorylation by viral thymidine kinase and preferential inhibition of viral DNA polymerase. Publications:
Saral R, Burns WH, Laskin OL, Santos GW, Lietman PS. Acyclovir prophylaxis of herpes-simplex-virus infections. N Engl J Med. 1981;305:63-7. Established in 1954, the Division of Clinical Pharmacology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is one of the oldest in the world, and has a long history of laboratory and clinical research, teaching, and service activities. Areas of investigation range across the spectrum of pharmacology: identification of promising drug targets; preclinical studies of lead compounds; modeling of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic relationships; studies of kinetics, metabolism, safety and efficacy of drugs in humans; rational use of drugs in clinical practice. The Division enjoys productive research collaborations with numerous Departments in the School of Medicine, the School of Public Health, and the School of Arts and Sciences. Faculty in the Division are integral to the widely acclaimed and emulated Graduate Training Program in Clinical Investigation, the first such PhD program in the country. Throughout its history, and by means of its research and teaching missions, Clinical Pharmacology has brought a clear molecular perspective to the science of clinical investigation.

PHARMACOLOGY. Systematic writers on the subject differ considerably in the exact meaning which they attach to the term pharmacology ( a drug ; Xayos, a discourse), some making it much more comprehensive than others. Binz, for instance, defines it as treating of the origin, nature, chemical and physical qualities, physiological actions, and therapeutical uses of drugs; in France and in Italy it is restricted to the mere description of medicines and their preparations, the action and uses of which as remedies are included in the term therapeutics . In English-speaking countries, and by the majority of German writers, the meaning is now restricted to the study of the action of chemical substances (as apart from foods) on all kinds of animals, from bacteria up to man; it is, in fact, a comparative study of the action of chemical bodies on invertebrate and vertebrate animals. One of its practical aims is to obtain a wide and accurate knowledge of remedial substances in relation to their application in the treatment of disease, while another is to discover new or improved remedies. This meaning of the word has now become fixed in the English language by use and wont. The term pharmaco-

Pharmacology (MCDB)
Pharmacology is a subject that integrates knowledge of biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, physiology and chemistry to study the relationship between biological processes and therapeutic agents. Pharmacologists investigate the effects and mechanism of action of drugs and chemical agents with living organisms. The areas of pharmacology are many and diverse, and include the therapeutic and toxicological actions of drugs on humans, animals and microorganisms, the influence of chemicals upon the environment and biological ecosystems, and the use of drugs as research tools for the elucidation of molecular and biochemical mechanisms.
The Major
In 1974, UCSB became the first campus in the nation to offer an undergraduate pharmacological sciences curriculum. In contrast to professional programs in medicine, nursing, and pharmacy, which emphasize the therapeutic principles and applications of pharmacology, UCSB emphasizes pharmacology as a basic science. UCSB's Pharmacology major is designed for students with research interests in all areas of the health sciences and is not related to pharmacy training.
