About the Department
Our understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying both normal function and drug action is advancing rapidly. The science of pharmacology addresses these issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. Researchers explore all levels of biological organization, from molecular interactions to entire animal systems. The Department of Pharmacology is part of the Medical School at the University of Minnesota. The Medical School and other healthcare professional schools make up the Academic Health Center. Summer Research
PHARMACOLOGY Summer Research Research Opportunities for Undergraduates The Department of Pharmacology has a ten-week summer research program that will run June 7, 2010 to August 13, 2010. The summer program offers participants a variety of experiences that will help prepare them for success in research-intensive doctoral programs. Participants will have research responsibilities, attend seminars, actively participate in a student journal club and take part in formal course work. Prior research experience is not necessary, and students of all undergraduate levels are encouraged to apply. The program offers opportunities for students to return for a second summer to continue the research conducted in the first summer fellowship, or to carry out research in a different laboratory. International students who are currently on an F1 visa in the United States can apply to the program, provided they have the proper documentation and summer school attendance at their home institution is not required to maintain full-time student status. The student must have a letter of permission from his/her home institution to participate in the program, as well as a notation on his/her I-20 indicating that he/she is eligible to work. This documentation must be presented to the Department of Pharmacology.

Visionary mushrooms studies in ethnopharmacology.
http://www.stainblue.com/ah.html
Dr. Albert Hofmann, the brilliant Swiss chemist, philosopher, author, and retired Director of the Pharmaceutical-Chemical Research Laboratories of Sandoz Ltd., Basel, is best known for fathering his "problem child," LSD, on April 19, 1943. Thirteen years later, a brief article in a local paper caught his eye. The article stated that a researcher from America had traveled to southern Mexico and participated in a native ritual where mushrooms were consumed that produced strange visions. Already intimately acquainted with the molecular structures of the known psychedelics, Dr. Hofmann was curious about the chemical constituency of the mushrooms. The researcher was, of course, R. Gordon Wasson, but his name was not mentioned in the article and Dr. Hofmann would remain interested in the mysterious mushrooms. A year later Dr. Hofmann was contacted by Professor Roger Heim, esteemed French mycologist and Director of the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, who requested his assistance in carrying out the chemical investigations of the sacred Mexican mushrooms. Roger Heim had accompanied R. Gordon Wasson on his 1956 expedition to Huautla de Jimenez and identified and named several of the species used by the Mazatecs in their divinatory and curing rites. His beautiful watercolor renderings of sacred Psilocybes accompanied Wasson's Life article in 1957.

Pharmacology at SIU
Pharmacology is the unified study of properties of biologically active chemicals and living organisms and all aspects of their interactions. It is an important link in medical education and biomedical science. The Department of Pharmacology at Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine evolved in July of 1979 from a broad-based, six-year old medical sciences group, resulting in a new emphasis on this discipline. The Department is charged with delivery of the graduate program in pharmacology and the main pharmacology medical student curriculum. Since its inception, this unit has grown substantially in research capability, having acquired both research personnel and substantial extramural funding support. Although it is still relatively young, the Department is highly energetic and rapidly achieving academic excellence.

Welcome to the Department of Pharmacology
The Department of Pharmacology at The University of Arizona is comprised of faculty, fellows, students, and technical staff working together to understand how chemicals influence human disease. Some chemicals and drugs are used to treat human diseases while others are known to cause human diseases. Our mission is to provide quality preclinical and clinical education in pharmacology and therapeutics for medical students, to educate and train graduate and postdoctoral biomedical scientists, to carry out basic research of recognized excellence, and to participate in governance and leadership in the UA College of Medicine, The University of Arizona and in appropriate national scientific and professional societies. Pharmacology is the science concerned with all aspects of the action of drugs and other chemicals on living systems. Its primary aim is the discovery of chemical mechanisms by which cellular and molecular functions are regulated for the purpose of understanding how existing drugs act and to develop new drugs for treatment and diagnosis of human diseases. The discipline of pharmacology explores biology through the actions of drugs and chemical substances. Drugs and chemicals produce their effects only through modifications of underlying biological systems; their actions are useful in regulating not only normal functions of cells and organisms but also the abnormal processes which occur in disease.

    Welcome to Pharmacology
The Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is dedicated to training researchers of the highest caliber. Taught by leading innovators in the field of pharmacology, our students receive a strong foundation in the basic sciences, but at the same time are encouraged to find unique ways of using that science to foster new discoveries. Our department educates both medical and graduate students in the principles underlying the distribution, metabolism, mechanism of action and toxicity of therapeutic agents or substances. The fundamental principles of basic and clinical pharmacology and therapeutics are conveyed through an interdisciplinary teaching effort that brings together faculty from this department and other basic science and clinical departments. At the graduate level, the department's interests are best reflected in the Molecular Toxicology and Pharmacology track of the Molecular Medicine Graduate Program, although departmental faculty and their students are affiliated with other tracks and programs as well. Within the department there are several defined areas of study from which to choose, including neuropharmacology, oncopharmacology and mechanistic toxicology. All incorporate training in modern techniques of pharmacology, with variable training in new drug development vs. better understanding of the actions of existing drugs and toxins.
