Philippines Geography has more islands than you could possible visit.
The Philippines geography is visually spectacular. It has 7,107 tropical sun drenched islands, of which more than 2,000 are uninhabited and 2,500 don’t even have a name. Typically the inland is mountainous which drop down to coastal plains and white sand beaches. It is nirvana for sun worshippers.
Where are the Philippines?
For those of you who do not know where the Philippines are, they are situated in South East Asia. West of the Philippines you will find Vietnam and has the South China Sea between them. The Luzon Strait separates the Philippines to the north with Taiwan and mainland China. To the east of the Philippine Islands you will come across the might of the Pacific Ocean, which batters the east coast and whips up some great surf. Depending on which part of the Philippines you leave and travel south from will determine which country you will bump into. So if you go south from Palawan Island, in the west of the Philippine Islands, you will come across Malaysia that is after you cross the Sulu Sea. Now if you go directly south from Mindanao you will travel over the Celebes Sea and arrive in Indonesia.

Philippines Geography
The Philippines archipelago is geographically located between latitude (approximately) 4 o 23'N and 21 o 25'N and longitude (approximately) 112 o E and 127 o E. It is composed of 7,107 islands, with a land area of 299,764 sq.kilometers. Its length measures 1,850 kilometers, starting from the point near the southern tip of Taiwan and ending close to northern Borneo. Its breadth is about 965 kilometers. The Philippines coastline adds up to 17,500 km. Three prominent bodies of water surround the archipelago: the Pacific Ocean on the east, the South China Sea on the west and north, and the Celebes Sea on the south. This position accounts for much of the variations in geographic, climatic and vegetation conditions in the country. The topography of the bigger islands - particularly Luzon and Mindanao - is characterized by alluvial plains, narrow valleys, rolling hills and high mountains. The highest mountains are found in Mindanao and Luzon, with the altitudes varying from 1,790 to 3,144 meters. Most of the smaller islands are mountainous in the interior, surrounded by narrow strips of discontinuous flat lowlands which constitute the coastal rims. The shorelines of both large and small islands are irregular. The Philippines' fertile land accounts for more than 900 species of orchids representing 100 genera that have been found. The Sampaguita is the national flower. Among the country's fauna are some endangered species like the Philippine eagle, the tarsier, and the mouse deer.

Geography The official count of islands that form the Republic of the Philippines is 7,107 islands. However, of these islands, only 2,000 are inhabited. The biggest islands are Luzon and Mindanao which cover roughly 66% of the country's total land area of 307, 055 sq. km. From north to south, the nation's archipelago stretches for 1,840 km while spanning 1,100 km from east to west. This island nation can be divided into four main groups. The first group is Luzon, the largest and northernmost island, which is also the site for the country's capital, Manila. Mindanao, the second largest island at the other end of the map together with Sulu form the second group. The third group is the tightly packed island group called the Visayas, which is made up of seven major islands namely Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Samar and Masbate. Finally, to the west, lies the province of Palawan with over 1,700 islands. With a make up of as many as 7,107 islands in the Western Pacific Ocean, it is not surprising that traveling in the Philippines archipelago can tax your flexibility and patience. Don't be surprised if you were told that it would take 20 years to cover all 7,107 islands even if you only spent a day on each of the island.

Philippines: GEOGRAPHY

GEOGRAPHY Location: The Philippines comprises an archipelago of some 7,107 islands located off Southeast Asia, between the South China Sea on the west and the Philippine Sea on the east. The major islands are Luzon in the north, the Visayan Islands in the middle, and Mindanao in the south. Size: The total area is about 300,000 square kilometers, including about 298,000 square kilometers of land and about 2,000 square kilometers of water. The Philippines stretches about 1,850 in the south and is about 1,000 kilometers at its widest point east to west. The bulk of the population lives on 11 of the 7,107 islands. Land Boundaries: The Philippines has no land boundaries. Nearby neighbors are Taiwan to the north, Malaysia and Indonesia to the south, Vietnam to the west, and China to the northwest. Disputed Territory: Length of Coastline: Estimates of the total length of the coastline range from 17,500 kilometers (official Philippine figure) to 36,289 kilometers (U.S. figure). Maritime Claims: The Philippines claims a territorial sea of up to 100 nautical miles from the nearest coastline, an area that includes the entire Sulu Sea and the northern part of the Celebes Sea. A presidential decree in 1978 announced additional baselines, which in effect extended the territorial sea to claim an area up to 285 nautical miles in breadth in the South China Sea west of Palawan Island. This area encompasses the Spratly Islands. The Philippines also claims its continental shelf to the depth of exploitation and an exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles from its baselines.

The philippines like many Pacific islands are the peaks of mountains whose base is on the ocean floor and is part of an island string extending from Siberia to Australia. The crust of the earth is made up of a number of movable plates and mountains are formed when one plate pushes under another. The more than 7,000 islands are part of the Pacific rim of fire at the interface where the Pacific plate slides under the Asian plate. The friction of their movements against one another gives rise to volcanos as well as causing earthquakes and produces ocean trenches in waters off the east coast which are 10,497m (about 6 mi) deep at the deepest point. An politically influential earthquake occurred August 17, 1983. Actually, it was not very strong, and there were no fatalities but one of the few buildings which suffered cracks was a famous old church in Paoay, near the home of the then President Marcos. Therefore superstitious people and Christian fundamentalists took the earthquake as a heavenly sign against Marcos.
