Author: Schaff, Philip (1819-1893) Author: Augustine, Saint (354-430) Description: With over twenty volumes, the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers is a momentous achievement. Originally gathered by Philip Schaff, the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers is a collection of writings by classical and medieval Christian theologians. The purpose of such a collection is to make their writings readily available. The entire work is divided into two series. The first series focuses on two classical Christian theologiansSt. Augustine and St. John Chrysostom. St. Augustine is one of the most influential and important Christian thinkers of all time. In addition to reprinting his most popular two worksthe Confessions and the City of God these volumes also contain other noteworthy and important works of St. Augustine, such as On the Holy Trinity Christian Doctrine , and others. St. John Chrysostom was an eloquent speaker and well-loved Christian clergyman. St. John took a more literal interpretation of Scripture, and much of his work focused on practical aspects of Christianity, particularly what is now called social justice. He advocated for the poor, and challenged abuses of authority. This particular volume contains Augustine's

The Sophists, and the Socratic/Platonic Project to "save philosophy"
History of Philosophy: Ancient and Medieval Spring, 1997 - Dr. Ess
We will see Socrates and then Plato attempt to "save philosophy" in the face of several complex dilemmas. Briefly, the philosophical project, initiated by Thales and the Milesian nature philosophers , began as an effort to provide an account (a logos ) of the natural order ( physis ) an account based on human reason ( logos ) and thus resting on assumptions regarding the intelligibility of the universe to human reason . This project, over a period of less than 200 years, results in a diversity of physical theories including evolution (first in Anaximander and then Empedocles ) and the spectacularly successful atomic theory of Democritus Inspired partly by the apparent successes of the physiologoi ("those who give a logos about physis - nature"), the Sophists began with the serious intent to replicate in the domain of ethics and politics what the earlier philosophers had achieved in the domain of physics. However, their search for a human nature and set of ethical and political values which transcended cultural differences and are thus universal, fueled especially by the relativistic tendency of atomism, concluded with a Sophism which argued first of all for ethical relativism (on the basis of the cultural relativism, already well-documented in Socrates' day).

Sophists
A group of Greek sophistai , which originally meant one who possesses true certitude is unattainable, and that culture and preparation for the business of public life are to be acquired, not by profound thinking, but by discussion and debate. In accordance with this principle, they gathered around them the young men of Athens , and professed to prepare them for their career as citizens and as men by teaching them the art of public speaking and the theory and practice of argumentation. They did not pretend to teach how the truth is to be attained. They did not care whether it could be attained or not. They aimed to impart to their pupils the ability to make the better cause seem the worse, and the worse the better. If we are to believe their opponents, Plato and Aristotle , they affected all kinds of refinement, in dress, speech, gesture, etc., and carried their love of argumentation to the point where all seriousness of purpose ceased and quibbling and sophistry began. The principal Sophists were: Protagoras of Abdera , called the Individualist ; Gorgias of Leontini , surnamed the Nihilist Hippias of Elis , the Polymathist ; and Prodicus of Ceos , the Moralist . Gorgias was called the Nihilist because of his doctrine "nothing exists: even if anything existed , we could know nothing about it, and, even if we

Digest of this school s teachings and its relation to Platonism.

Back to Home Page or Contents Page or Past and present beliefs or Index Pythagoreanism
An ethical, religious, and mystical system of teaching founded by Pythagoras in the sixth century BC. Those holding to such teaching were called Pythagoreans. Their first society or brotherhood was established in Croton about 530 BC. The teaching exerted political influence in Croton and in other city-states throughout the region. By the fifth century BC Pythagorean societies in southern Italy had became involved in the fierce fighting between the aristocracy and the democratic forces of government. When the democratic party gained control it fiercely turned on the Pythagoreans in their settlements and burned them. Those that survived fled back to the Greek mainland and settled around Thebes and Phlius. About this time in the fifth century BC the Pythagoreans separated into two distinct groups called the Acusmatici (from akousma , meaning "oral precept") whose members emphasized the observation of the special Pythagorean way of life taught by the master himself. The second group was the Mathematici (meaning "students of theoretical subjects"), who prsued interests in arithmetic, the theory of music, astronomy, and cosmology.
The Mathematici group eventually became closely associated with the doctrine of Plato and his followers who established the Platonic Academy. The Acusmatici became wandering ascetics finally joining the Cynics of the fourth century BC.

2.6 Pythagoreanism
The philosophical school and religious brotherhood known as Pythagoreanism is believed to have been founded by Pythagoras of Samos, who settled in Croton in southern Italy about 525 BC.
2.6.1 GENERAL FEATURES OF PYTHAGOREANISM
The character of the original Pythagoreanism is controversial, and the conglomeration of disparate features that it displayed is intrinsically confusing. Its fame rests, however, on some very influential ideas, not always correctly understood, that have been ascribed to it since antiquity. These ideas include those of (1) the metaphysic of number and the conception that reality, including music and astronomy, is, at its deepest level, mathematical in nature; (2) the use of philosophy as a means of spiritual purification; (3) the heavenly destiny of the soul and the possibility of its rising to union with the divine; (4) the appeal to certain symbols, sometimes mystical, such as the tetraktys the golden section, and the harmony of the spheres (to be discussed below); (5) the Pythagorean theorem; and (6) the demand that members of the order shall observe a strict loyalty and secrecy. 55. The Happy Iconoclast
Using Epicurian philosophy.
http://www.rationality.net/
2300 years ago, the Greek Philosopher Epicurus declared: Happiness is man's greatest aim in life. Tranquility and rationality are the cornerstones of happiness. - BUT 2300 years later, we are still searching for tranquility and happiness. Only recently has man developed the tools and the knowledge to achieve lasting happiness in the spirit of Epicurus. NEW My new book is now available as a free download How Life Really Works:
Happiness in an Unhappy World
For a book outline and to download the book, click here How to find Happiness in an Unhappy World Man's life is a perpetual quest for happiness and yet, as Henry Thoreau astutely observed: "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation." What went wrong - Have we lost our alignment with reality? Have we allowed too many erroneous concepts to usurp our perception of reality? Is it time to re-examine obsolete concepts icons and to take a new look at the way the world really works? Shall we aspire to become what the Greeks called "Iconoclasts": The breakers of Icons?! The Path to Lasting Happiness: Happiness rests within us. If we wish to be happy, we need to take full responsibility for our emotional response to all events in our life. No other person has the power to make us happy or unhappy. We, alone, can choose to be happy, or unhappy.
