Elements of a Discussion
• Curiosity and wonder
• Respectful listening
• Being open to what others have to say
• Sharing with others
• Open ended questioning
• Challenging my own viewpoints
• Clarifying my viewpoint to myself and others
• Providing concrete examples
• Supporting my views with evidence • Coherent reasoning Inquiry/ Discussion Habits • Looking for assumptions • Creativity • Finding alternate perspectives • Looking for differences of meaning • Looking for differences of degree • Staying on task • Putting ideas in context No need to arrive at conclusion or closure. Agreement and disagreement are beside the point. Discussion Practice Session . Each person brings in a philosophical question of interest to them. Bring current event issues down to the philosophical question. For instance “Death Penalty” might be better as “Who owns human life?” or “Should we be in Iraq?” might be better as “What makes a just war?” or “When should a country (or an individual) interfere in the affairs of another?” . In groups of 5 or 6, each person will facilitate a discussion on their question for 10 minutes. Appoint a timer.

The History of the Philosophy Club
The Hun School Philosophy Club was founded in 1998 by Richard Suchenski. Meetings were originally held Thursdays during Activities Period in Room 104, under the supervision of Dr. Magette. The first couple of meetings had large turnouts, mainly due to snacks provided by Richard. However, these crowded, loud forums proved to be a negative environment for discussion. With the absence of the snacks, the group shrank to a more manageable number. And thus, the Philosophy Club was born! The above optimistic drivel was written by, one, Martey Dodoo, former head of Philosophy Club ('01-'01 school year.) Though in no way is his brief chronicle inaccurate, it is the opinion of the current webmaster that certain additions and elucidations must be made so that the casual viewer may fully appreciate the extent of Hun Philosophy. There is no particular point of departure which might be deemed "best", and with that in mind, we jump into the true fray of things the present September 2002.

    Just Do It!
    David Fisher
We've heard the phrase so much it tends to lose meaning after a while. And yet it's a part of our culture now. Everyone knows that commercial and what company made the term popular. But how often do we actually "just do it"? How many training meetings, seminars, retreats, coffees, conferences, classes have we been to, but where no one really does it? It's talked about ad nauseam; you hear phrases like, "How do we reach the younger generation?"; "We really need to be involved our community"; "Lots of families are moving into this area"; "We should help the poor more"; "I wish I could get deeper into the Bible." So we pray and teach and talk, and train, train, train, but it hardly reaches beyond the walls of the church, or the fences of our comfort zones. So, to use an overused term on an old idea, maybe we
