Philosophy is a life long process of searching and reflective thought in the quest for truth and understanding. Our own actions, and those of other people, and the world around us, are filled with mystery. We inquire to better know ourselves, to understand life and society, and to come to grips with the mysteries of the universe. Studying what philosophers have said gives us a place to start. Whether we agree or disagree with them we can use their ideas to begin our inquiry.

Art gallery is outreach for Sojourn Community
    By Victoria Moon
    Kentucky Western Recorder
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABP)Hidden among the tattoo parlors, piercing salons, trendy restaurants and alternative music stores in the Highlands district of Louisville, Ky., is an art gallery that is taking the idea of "seeker service" to a whole new level.
The gallery, Aslan's How, is the evangelistic outreach ministry of Sojourn Community, a young, postmodern church.
"We believe the arts need to be cultivated and fostered," said Pastor Daniel Montgomery.
The fledgling church, which is supported by the Kentucky Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist North American Mission Board, opened the gallery in November 2000 as a way to build bridges within the community.
"We are trying to build a non-sectarian venue with this," Montgomery said. "This isn't a Christian art gallery. It's an art gallery run by Christians."
Despite the distinction made by Montgomery, hints of the gallery's Christian leanings abound. Its name is taken from C.S. Lewis' classic children's allegory, "The Chronicles of Narnia." The gallery's first exhibit was "The Florence Portfolio: Sacrifice," a group of 20 etchings by six artists with Christians In Visual Arts.
"We had a good response," Montgomery said.

Conference Overview Philosophy is often thought to be an arcane subject, suitable only for adults. The idea that children can engage in philosophical reflection conflicts with a long-standing view that children are "emotional," "appetitive," and "irrational." There is a growing consensus among philosophers and educators, however, that children are natural philosophers. Their abundant curiosity, their propensity for asking questions, and their flexible minds, predispose them toward philosophical questions. With adequate encouragement and a student centered curriculum, they can develop the critical thinking skills characteristic of philosophic thought and move from mere consumers of information to reflective and autonomous thinkers.
The goal of Keeping the Child in Mind: A Conference About Philosophy for Children is to stimulate discussion of the theory and practice of Philosophy for Children and, in turn, to develop effective ways to introduce philosophy into pre-college classrooms in Memphis.

    http://www.salemgathering.com/Gathering_Web/NewPages/outreachwhy.html
    Why and How we Serve
How We Attempt to Touch People's Hearts for God: The Gathering is a church, but it is more than that. We are a postmodern evangelism training and outreach center in downtown Salem, MA. We love the city of Salem, and seek to be a benefit to it by whatever means possible. The arts, dream interpretation, spiritual counseling, music, movie nights, and philosophy discussion groups are some the means we attempt to interface with the North Shore of Boston. We have been able to expand our outreach during Halloween to include the largest stage in town, dozens of spiritual adivisors offering encouragement to people, and workshops on spiritual issues. This outreach from The Gathering is a mission field within the boundaries of the U.S. Our dream is to take this model around the world to other festivals. Thes are just a few of the things your giving and prayer helps to support.
