[This site can also be viewed with diacritics. Click here for access The Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies is an ongoing project to assemble and summarize information on the various systems (darsana) of Indian philosophy. Initiated forty years ago, the entire series is planned to consist of some 28 volumes: 26 dealing with particular philosophical systems, an introductory Bibliography, and a concluding Glossary/Index. Karl H. Potter is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Washington. Each volume in the series contains an Introduction by its Editor(s), followed by summaries of all the philosophical texts of the system known to exist in Western language translation, or extant only in editions, or in a few cases available only in manuscript. These summaries are arranged in the chronological order in which the texts appear to have been written, and provide a guide to the literature together with a flowing account of the development of thought through the history of the system being covered. The summaries are solicited from specialists in the field from throughout the world who have an intimate knowledge of the texts being summarized. For purposes of control, "Indian philosophical work" as understood for the project is confined to treatises which are (1) of philosophical interest throughout; (2) theoretical rather than purely practical in their intended function, and (3) polemical or at least expository in a context where defense of one view among alternatives is appropriate.

Philosophy General Overview
This conquest pushed many away from the area to start new schools in other parts of the world. A major area was Sicily and southern Italy where many philosophers continued to do just that, philosophize. A man by the name of Pythagoras started a cult that was a mixture of philosophy and mysticism. They focused greatly on math, because they thought everything was made of numbers and they were the essences of all things. Another group called the Sophists, the wise ones or “the wise guys” , sprang up from the study of philosophy. They unlike others sold their knowledge to others to make their living. One of the greatest amongst them was thought to be Protagoras who thought that all things were relative to the needs of humans. This ideology formed the conclusion that there is “no absolute truths or eternal standards of right and wrong”.

Philosophy - general
Expert: Richard Doczy - 9/11/2005 Question well, I guess i am asking a fundamental question of what is the real aim of philosophy...It strikes me as strange that for thousands of years people have been asking the same basic questions and have not found the answers to them- why are we here, what is this world, what is the right way to live and how to be happy...what then in you opinion, is the object of philosophy if we cannot answer the most basic questions of our own existence? thanks Answer It is not the case that for thousands of years people have asked the same questions but came up with no answers. They have come up with many answers, some of them excellent, even the right ones, but they haven't reached widespread agreement about them, which is perfectly normal for people to do. People are very different and often stubborn and silly and inept and only now and then are they up to reaching the right answers. In this discpline, too, even if they do reach the right answers, the next generation will need to revisit the issue again, and again, since it is so important and no one else's answer can be one's own answer that one must reach through doing the hard work like those before. From each generation there will be some who will focus on these issues and grapple with them and some of these will get it right or nearly so. But that's not good enough for the next bunchthey, too, need to come up with their answers. Such is the human condition.

Philosophy (General).
Democritus
suggested that all substance in the universe was made up of particles so minute that nothing smaller was possible. He regarded those particles (atoms) as unchangeable and indestructible, and as the only content of the universe besides the very space in which they existed. William James believed that every difference in thinking must make a difference to someone, somewhere. If two theories differ, the difference becomes clear when we know (1) how they differ over what the facts are, and (2) the difference in our behavior if we believe that one or the other is true. Philosophy of History
All terrible evils has Romania suffered from the Arabs even until now. Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (d.959 AD) quoting the Chronicle of Theophanes (c.815 AD), De Administrando Imperio , p.94 [Dumbarton Oaks Texts, Greek text edited by Gy. Moravcsik, 1967, 2008] Hence arises the fact that everything better struggles through only with difficulty; what is noble and wise very rarely makes its appearance, becomes effective, or meets with a hearing, but the absurd and perverse in the realm of thought, the dull and tasteless in the sphere of art, and the wicked and fraudulent in the sphere of action, really assert a supremacy that is disturbed only by brief interruptions.
