Guide to the Philosophy of Mind
Compiled by David Chalmers
Since 1997 I have been philosophy of mind editor for the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy . By now we have accumulated enough entries in the philosophy of mind that it's the equivalent of a pretty definitive reference work in the field. I have a certain pride in this, as I've put a lot of work into the editing of each entry, and many of the entries are superb guides to their topics. I thought it would make sense to gather all these in one place, as a useful reference for those who are especially interested in the philosophy of mind. The first list below includes the entries classified under "philosophy of mind" in the encyclopedia. All of these were edited by me or by Daniel Stoljar, who came on board as co-editor in 2003. The second list includes some relevant entries from other areas, especially philosophy of cognitive science (edited by Barbara von Eckardt and Shaun Nichols), but also metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language, and philosophy of action. Note that the unlinked entries are still in progress. Most of these have already been through a draft and should appear before too long. SEP Philosophy of Mind entries

Mind, philosophy of
‘Philosophy of mind’, and ‘philosophy of psychology’ are two terms for the same general area of philosophical inquiry: the nature of mental phenomena and their connection with behaviour and, in more recent discussions, the brain. Much work in this area reflects a revolution in psychology that began mid-century. Before then, largely in reaction to traditional claims about the mind being non-physical (see Dualism Descartes ), many thought that a scientific psychology should avoid talk of ‘private’ mental states. Investigation of such states had seemed to be based on unreliable introspection (see Introspection, psychology of ), not subject to independent checking (see Private language argument ), and to invite dubious ideas of telepathy (see Parapsychology ). Consequently, psychologists like B.F. Skinner and J.B. Watson, and philosophers like W.V. Quine and Gilbert Ryle argued that scientific psychology should confine itself to studying publicly observable relations between stimuli and responses (see Behaviourism, methodological and scientific

zSB(3,3) What is the Philosophy of Mind?:
The Philosophy of Mind is a relatively recent field that deals with questions of consciousness and how it interacts with both the body and the outside world. The Philosophy of Mind asks not only what mental phenomena are and what gives rise to them, but also what relationship they have to the larger physical body and the world around us. Atheists and theists have fundamental disagreements about the nature of the human mind, with almost all atheists regarding it as material and natural while theists insist that consciousness cannot be physical. Instead, the mind must have a supernatural source in the soul and in God.
The Philosophy of Mind is generally treated as part of Metaphysics because it addresses the nature of an aspect of reality: the mind. For some, depending upon their other views on Metaphysics, the nature of the mind may in fact be the nature of all of reality because they believe that everything is dependent upon the observation and actions of minds. For theists, the Philosophy of Mind and Metaphysics are especially interconnected because many believe first that our reality exists and is dependent upon the Mind of God and, second, that our minds were created at least in part to reflect the Mind of God.

    Philosophy of Mind
The philosophy of mind is the branch of metaphysics that studies the nature of mind, what it is that makes us conscious beings. The central question in the field is whether the mind is material or immaterial: are we merely physical beings, or something more? Do we have immaterial souls that animate our bodies, or are we merely electrical activity in an organic brain?
    Substance Dualism
Substance dualism is well-established among non-philosophers. It is the view that there are two fundamentally different types of substancephysical and non-physicaland that human beings are made up of two components: physical bodies and non-physical minds. This theory has many attractions, but is now seen by many, rightly or wrongly, as old-fashioned and naive.
    Substance Monism
In opposition to substance dualism is substance monism , the view that there is no distinction between the mental and physical realms, that everything is fundamentally the same. Although it is possible to argue that everything is mental, as idealism does, it is much more common to hold that everything is physical, to endorse “physicalism” or “materialism”.

just click on the 'Notes' link above to see the pdf file There is a chapter on The Philosophy of Mind, written by David Rothenberg of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, in World P hilosophy In it he considers how mind and body are related, issues concerning artificial intelligence, and also examines both Hindu and Zen approaches to mind. The Philosophy of Mind is a fascinating area of study. It concerns fundamental questions about the nature of the self, issues of how our minds and our bodies interact, and the broader questions about the nature of consciousness. It links to science, in that we experience ourselves as free and outside the series of physical causes that might suggest that everything is completely determined on the physical level. It links also with religion, in that many religious people believe in some form of life after death or reincarnation. Does that make any sense? is disembodied life possible? How does it relate to our idea of what it is to be a person. The nature of consciousness is one of the key areas of exploration in the Philosophy of Mind. Indeed, once we stop to think about it (and we don't do that very often, because being conscious is such a natural thing that we accept it uncritically), the whole relationship between being conscious of something and the thing of which we are conscious is a curious thing. Is consciousness something that is simply going on in the brain - and therefore something that will be explained completely as neuroscience becomes more specific about brain functioning? Huge numbers of questions crop up once you start to unpack these things.

Suppose that each of B and C furthers my plan, and neither of them furthers it better than the other. Then it does not seem that sovereignty would require me to know or decide prior to my decision to cause A which of B and C would eventuate. Sovereignty perhaps requires that nothing happens that is contrary to God's plan, but it does not require that God's plan should determine every detail. Here is try at a notion of sovereignty built on this idea:
