41. Philosophy Of Mind By Roger Jones
Philosophy of Mind, Introduction to philosophy since the Enlightenment by Roger Jones

Philosophy of mind
It is often thought that the main defining characteristic of a person is that a person has consciousness, mind or soul. We are all aware of consciousness (our feelings, thoughts and sensations), however it is more difficult to say what consciousness is. Plato(c. 427-347 BC) thought that what we really are is our soul, and that this soul will survive after death, indeed death is seen as the release of the soul. Plato is thus asserting that soul and body are distinct substances, bodies die, but souls are immortal. Aristotle (384-322 BC) Thought that the soul and the body are essentially related. The soul is not a separate substance, but an arrangement of stuff, or material substance, of which the body is made. As Aristotle once said, "If an axe had a soul, its soul would be cutting" For Aristotle then individual immortality seems impossible. Modern philosophy has developed these 2 themes in a number of ways. Stimulated by Descartes , Leibniz suggested that mind and body only appear to interact: in reality there is no relation between the 2 substances, rather God has pre-established a harmony so that our minds and bodies do not fall out of sync. He uses the analogy of the 2 clocks to illustrate his point. God is seen the master craftsman who has created 2 clocks of such perfection that they always show the same time. Whilst this point of view does not rule out immortality, it does seem that free will can not exist as god has pre-established all possible activities.

Philosophy and Christian Theology
First published Mon May 13, 2002; substantive revision Sat Jan 26, 2008 Many of the doctrines and concepts central to Christianity have important philosophical implications or presuppositions. In this article we will take a closer look at some of the central doctrines and concepts, and their philosophical relevance. Of course, many philosophically laden doctrines and concepts are relevant to Christianity, and we cannot discuss them all here. Rather, our focus will be on those concepts and doctrines that are distinctively Christian, and which have been the focus of a good deal of recent discussion in the philosophical literature. Thus, although theism is a central Christian concept, it is not distinctively Christian and so will not be covered here. Further, although views about the Eucharist, a central Christian concept, have held a significant place in the philosophical dialogue in former times, it will not be discussed here since it has not been a significant focus of recent discussions. As a result, we will concentrate on three distinctive and central Christian concepts which have received significant attention in the recent literature: the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation, and views on the nature of atonement.

Philosophy of Mind
(December 12): The final papers are due on Friday the 15th of December at 5pm in my mailbox, 503 Main Building; here are the topics . The final exam is on Monday the 18th of December at 10am, in 628 Shimkin Hall. The handout summarising the second half of the course that was given out in class on the 11th is available here . Thanks to everyone who participated in the course!
Course Description
In this course we'll be thinking about immaterial spirits, futuristic computers and robots, fake computers with little people inside, Martians who behave like us but have an internal structure very different from ours, brains in vats, 'swampmen' who are formed by random aggregation of molecules.... We will ask whether these strange characters have thoughts and feelings, and whether, if so, they are like us in what they think and feel. We will consider how we might know the answers to these questions, and whether they even have right answers. The point is not to consider bizarre cases just for the sake of it, but to see what light we can shed on our own nature as beings with mental lives.

[This site can also be viewed with diacritics. Click here for access The Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies is an ongoing project to assemble and summarize information on the various systems (darsana) of Indian philosophy. Initiated forty years ago, the entire series is planned to consist of some 28 volumes: 26 dealing with particular philosophical systems, an introductory Bibliography, and a concluding Glossary/Index. Karl H. Potter is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Washington. Each volume in the series contains an Introduction by its Editor(s), followed by summaries of all the philosophical texts of the system known to exist in Western language translation, or extant only in editions, or in a few cases available only in manuscript. These summaries are arranged in the chronological order in which the texts appear to have been written, and provide a guide to the literature together with a flowing account of the development of thought through the history of the system being covered. The summaries are solicited from specialists in the field from throughout the world who have an intimate knowledge of the texts being summarized. For purposes of control, "Indian philosophical work" as understood for the project is confined to treatises which are (1) of philosophical interest throughout; (2) theoretical rather than purely practical in their intended function, and (3) polemical or at least expository in a context where defense of one view among alternatives is appropriate.

Symposia What this page is and how to use it Philosophy of mind and the philosophical issues arising in the allied domain of cognitive sciences constitute a fast developing territory, which is very well introduced by a number of excellent web resources (see our choice at RECOMMENDED LINKS section). In the hope not just to follow the stream, but to be interestingly complementary to them, more focused views of specific regions will be supplied here. We call them GUIDED TOURS , each being an in depth exploration of a particular topic that comprises two parts: 1) a preliminary state-of-the-art report on the issue, which explains what the question is, how it arises and what ramifications result from it; how the debate goes on with all the theories, objections, proposed solutions, etc. 2) a bibliographical guide to the relevant literature, which consists of copiously annotated items. Such a bibliography does not aim at an abstract completeness, but it should reasonably cover all the material worth mentioning, or at least what so seems in the opinion of the author. As it is in the ‘field guide’ genre, the reader is provided with helpful signposts by experienced authors, but is encouraged to eventually take his own path. In the continuous effort of enlarging and keeping them updated, the ‘tours’ will be always in progress.
Annotated items can be individually searched in the

All terrible evils has Romania suffered from the Arabs even until now. Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (d.959 AD) quoting the Chronicle of Theophanes (c.815 AD), De Administrando Imperio , p.94 [Dumbarton Oaks Texts, Greek text edited by Gy. Moravcsik, 1967, 2008] Hence arises the fact that everything better struggles through only with difficulty; what is noble and wise very rarely makes its appearance, becomes effective, or meets with a hearing, but the absurd and perverse in the realm of thought, the dull and tasteless in the sphere of art, and the wicked and fraudulent in the sphere of action, really assert a supremacy that is disturbed only by brief interruptions.
