ABOUT THIS SITE
The first emphasis for this site [a satellite site to the Journey in Being website ] is my work and essays in the philosophy of mind. Currently there is no attempt to provide comprehensive links or review of the field; there are, however, a few secondary links in Some Resources . The essay The Philosophy of Mind and Consciousness , 1999, also linked below, has a review of the literature with emphasis on mind-body problem for consciousness and, also, has a representative bibliography. This site may be viewed either as an independent site or as a sister site to my primary site and interest in the exploration of being by thought and action. I have long had an interest in the philosophy of mind and the recent field of consciousness studies. I have written a number of essays on mind that are philosophical in its critical and imaginative senses. Most of the essays and notes linked below are my work. I have included [links to] related topics and resources; links to other sites are included in these secondary pages. So as to avoid proliferation, links are organized in the sections starting at

A look at functionalism, the view according to which mental states are defined by their functional roles.

Functionalism
According to functionalism, what defines a mental state is its function. For any mental state, there is a functional role that defines it. For example, belief that it is raining is defined as the state that causes us to take an umbrella with us if we are going outside, fetch washing from the washing line if we have left any out there, etc. Any state that fulfils this functional role counts as a belief that it is raining. Functionalism is distinct from behaviourism because whereas behaviourism holds that a mental state is identical with facts about behaviour, functionalism holds that a mental state is the state that explains facts about behaviour. Functionalism sits well with the multiple realisability thesis, which holds that mental states can take many forms. Because functionalism is only interested in functional role as the defining feature of mentality, any state that plays the appropriate functional role will do. This means, for example, that a machine whose hardware causes it to act in appropriate ways is no less conscious than a human being whose brain causes them to act in appropriate ways. The most famous objection to functionalism is John Searle’s Chinese Room thought-experiment.

Ancient Greek Philosophy
The Ancient Greek philosophers have played a pivotal role in the shaping of the western philosophical tradition. This article surveys the seminal works and ideas of key figures in the Ancient Greek philosophical tradition from the Presocratics to the Neoplatonists. It highlights their main philosophical concerns and the evolution in their thought from the sixth century BCE to the sixth century CE. The Ancient Greek philosophical tradition broke away from a mythological approach to explaining the world, and it initiated an approach based on reason and evidence. Initially concerned with explaining the entire cosmos, the Presocratic philosophers strived to identify its single underlying principle. Their theories were diverse and none achieved a consensus, yet their legacy was the initiation of the quest to identify underlying principles.

The Origin of Philosophy The Attributes of Mythic/Mythopoeic Thought - How was Greek philosophy different from what came before? Or was it different?
    http://www.friesian.com/greek.htm
The Origin of Philosophy: The Attributes of Mythic/Mythopoeic Thought
The pioneering work on this subject was The Intellectual Adventure of Ancient Man, An Essay on Speculative Thought in the Ancient Near East by Henri Frankfort, H.A. Frankfort, John A. Wilson, Thorkild Jacobsen, and William A. Irwin (University of Chicago Press, 1946, 1977 also once issued by Penguin as Before Philosophy ). Related ideas can also be found in Henri Frankfort's great Ancient Egyptian Religion How was Greek philosophy different from what came before? Or was it different? Even though "philosophy" is a Greek word, from , "to love," and , "wisdom," perhaps it was just a continuation of how people had always thought about things anyway. After all, it is not uncommon now for items of Egyptian literature, like the Instruction of Ptah.h.otep , to be listed as Egyptian "philosophy." So if Greek philosophy is to be thought of as different, there must be ways of specifying that difference. Similarly, if Greek philosophy is to be compared with Indian and Chinese philosophy, there must be something that they have in common, and that can be mutually contrasted with pre-philosophical thought. As it happens, Greek philosophy, and Indian and Chinese

Notre Dame Center for Philosophy of Religion
Welcome The primary mission of the Center for Philosophy of Religion is to promote work on topics in the philosophy of religion and philosophical theology, and to encourage the development and exploration of specifically Christian and theistic philosophy. We also aim to foster dialogue between the disciplines of Philosophy and Theology on topics of mutual interest, and to disseminate the results of scholarly research on these issues both within the academy and to a wider, non-academic audience. We carry out our mission by hosting residential research fellowships and a weekly discussion group, and by organizing and funding academic conferences, seminars, course programs, popular and scholarly lectures, and debates.

    Possible Paper Topics
Fall, 2005 Here are a few ideas for possible paper topics. A real topic would need to be more refined, of course; these are possible directions in which papers might go rather than focused topics. 1. It seems on the face of it extremely difficult to see how the nature of conscious experience can be accounted for on any materialist view (including behaviorism, the identity theory, and functionalism). Consider some objections to a particular attempt to analyze the nature of consciousness or of sensations, and whether these objections can be overcome. (The paper will be most interesting if you make a serious effort to overcome objections to a materialist account, since the objections are fairly obvious but it is not at all obvious how to get round them. So good tactical advice might be to pick a materialist view you are inclined to think is correct and try to defend it.) Suggestions on reading: Cooney has sections on the main materialist theories, and suggestions for additional reading. A very ambitious recent attempt to develop a materialist theory of consciousness is Daniel Dennett, Consciousness Explained . One of the best recent sources for arguments against a materialist account of consciousness is David Chalmers
