Expert comment on current issues with an ethical flavour, philosophical news, articles and much more from our own daily (well nearly) updated Philosophy News Service The Society's 2009 Conference in honour of Timothy Sprigge The Society has organised a residential conference structured around various philosophical workshops in honour of Timothy Sprigge who in his last years was a good friend to the Society. It will take place in Oxford on the weekend of 27-28th June and there are still a limited number of places available. More details are here . Please email us to find out more and enquire about attending. The Northern Group is sponsoring on-line discussions on philosophical topics. The discussions will be led by guest contributors but everyone is welcome to send their thoughts into the debate. The aim is to develop thoughtful, reflective discussions in which exploration is preferred to exposition or controversy, and listening will be as important as talking.
Send us your comments. We'd love to hear from you!

  • In Defense of a Kripkean Dogma , with Ishani Maitra and Brain Weatherson, penultimate draft: 22 February, 2010, forthcoming in Philosophy and Phenomenological Research. In “Against Arguments from Reference”, Ron Mallon, Edouard Machery, Shaun Nichols, and Stephen Stich (hereafter, MMNS) argue that recent experiments concerning reference undermine various philosophical arguments that presuppose the correctness of the causal-historical theory of reference. We will argue three things in reply. First, the experiments in question—concerning Kripke’s Gödel/Schmidt example—don’t really speak to the dispute between descriptivism and the causal-historical theory; though the two theories are empirically testable, we need to look at quite different data than MMNS do to decide between them. Second, the Gödel/Schmidt example plays a different, and much smaller, role in Kripke’s argument for the causal-historical theory than MMNS assume. Finally, and relatedly, even if Kripke is wrong about the Gödel/Schmidt example—indeed, even if the causal-historical theory is not the correct theory of names for some human languages—that does not, contrary to MMNS’s claim, undermine uses of the causal-historical theory in philosophical research projects.

The six pillars of character provide a common language of virtue and a framework for character Home Page Educational Philosophy Publications
http://web.nccu.edu/soe/faculty_staff/mutisya/educationalphilosophy.htm
My Educational Philosophy Statement My fundamental belief in education is that, all children can learn, although, at different paces, which is based on my idealism side. Thus, I view equity as the essence of educational process, which is perfected by how one understands or is literate about the system that runs the state of affairs through democratic principles. This approach to learning also becomes a life changing process and a life-long education. Understanding the role of philosophy in education (which I consider the theory of education), has made me truly believe that character is a great asset in teaching, which is grounded in the six pillars of character that transcend culture, religion, and socioeconomic differences. The six pillars are: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness and Justice, Civic Virtue and Citizenship.
