For example, a red filter can be used to lighten reds or to darken a blue sky and make white clouds stand out. A green filter will lighten foliage. In both film and digital photography, a polarising filter can be used to darken a blue sky or to eliminate unwanted reflections. Normal colour images can be manipulated on a computer too. With appropriate software, the different colour elements of an image can be isolated (e.g. the red, green or blue channels) and the colour removed to produce an image similar to what can be achieved with a camera and filter.

Can Composition Be Taught?
I first did these composition classes on the Minolta Forum in 2003. Originally, my idea was simply to shake up the technophilia of the DPReview forums a little bit; I thought that the community could benefit from a little reminder of what the cameras are about, in the end. The lessons were rather more successful than I expected, and I was asked for a re-run. However, I feel that I've learned a thing or two about photography since then, and maybe also about teaching it. Therefore this preamble. A photographer whom I admire a great deal, Ed Leys (see his work at California Light and Structure ) feels very strongly that composition can't and shouldn't be taught at all. He believes that "teaching composition" imposes arbitrary and artificial constraints on creativity, and as a worst case could stifle the flame and vision of a creative genius, thereby making the world a poorer place. While I don't entirely agree with him, for reasons I'll discuss below, I think he makes a valuable point. The dilemma of "teaching composition" is that there's no way to do it meaningfully without imposing rules or constraints, and it's all too easy to get caught up in these rules or constraints, and mistake them for standards of excellence. Inevitably, the acquisition of these "rules" will shape the vision and photography of the person learning them. This can well detract from the individual quality of the work. The fact remains that a picture composed "by the book" is simply a picture that has been skilfully composed "by the book." Whether it's interesting or evocative or has artistic power or not has nothing to do with it.

Convincing Black And White Digital Photographs
I feel comparing black and white digital photography with it's film equivalent is like comparing apples with oranges. They just are not the same thing in look and feel. I discussed this in detail in part 1 of this series. When speaking with photographer Hellen Van Meene she describe film as having " magic" . Now I'm not sure what the techical term for magic is but creatively I know exactly what Hellen means. Until very recently I didn't really feel there was anything available for the digital photographer that would add that magic to a black and white digital photograph. I already knew from bitter experience that transforming a colour digital photograph into a convincing black and white print is very difficult and can be inconsistant and unconvincing. I felt the end results could be lacklustre and the process time consuming. Also doing excellent black and white conversion is beyond most peoples abilities. People want to take pictures not program computers. I resigned myself to shooting rolls of black and white film and paying exhobitant sums of money to develop them. This was the situation until I discovered some software called

Early Photographic Techniques Early Photographic Techniques The daguerreotype
Fig. 1. Photographer unknown: subject unknown, sixth plate daguerreotype, c. 1847-50. Collection of Gregory Fried. An ambrotype is a weak negative image on glass rendered positive by the addition of a dark background. Frederick Scott Archer, an English sculptor, discovered that light-sensitive silver salts could be mixed with collodion, a sticky liquid that rapidly hardens and which had seen use as a field bandage for the British military. This mixture could then be applied to a glass plate and exposed in a camera while still wet; hence the term "wet plate process." In 1854, James Cutting of Boston took out a patent on this process, and Marcus Root coined the name "ambrotype" for it, from the Greek ambrotos (immortal). The process was cheaper and easier than the daguerreotype and contributed to the demise of that earlier process. Like the daguerreotype, an ambrotype was also produced as a unique object, although in principle, a print could be made from the negative on the glass. For an illustration of how a dark background makes the negative ambrotype plate look positive, see fig. 2.

advanced imaging laboratory some notes on photography
There are several controls on the camera that are vital to any photographer who is serious about making photographs rather than simply taking them. These controls are the lens focal length, the subject distance, the aperture and the shutter speed. While modern cameras can have a high degree of automation, it is important to at least understand these functions. Fig. 1 typical film camera. Fig. 2 typical digital camera. Fig. 3 typical scientific camera Coupling the use of these controls with your selection of film type, ISO and white balance settings in a digital camera, point of view, moment of exposure, lighting (through choice of time of day or use of flash or flood light) and its direction and quality as well as your control of film processing and print making or digital post processing gives you tremendous ability to structure and create your images, rather than blindly record the reality in front of your lens. To use these controls successfully involves a certain amount of mental previsualization of the final image and this is the most important skill for a photographer to develop. Try to look at the world with a critical eye whenever you can. Try to see picture possibilities and envision how you would photograph them. By doing these visual exercises your photographic vision will sharpen rapidly.
