Long before the first photographs were made, Chinese philosopher Mo Ti and Greek mathematicians Aristotle and Euclid described a pinhole camera in the 5th and 4th centuries BC. In the 6th century CE, Byzantine mathematician Anthemius of Tralles used a type of camera obscura in his experiments Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen) (965–1040) studied the camera obscura and pinhole camera Albertus Magnus (1193/1206-1280) discovered silver nitrate , and Georges Fabricius (1516–1571) discovered silver chloride Daniel Barbaro described a diaphragm in 1568. Wilhelm Homberg described how light darkened some chemicals (photochemical effect) in 1694. The novel Giphantie (by the French Tiphaigne de la Roche , 1729–1774) described what can be interpreted as photography.

    HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY
This web site is devoted to the study, collecting, and preservation of antique and classic cameras, vintage photographs, and the history of photography. As more and more people enter this fascinating field, the demand for better information, resources, and appraisal services is also increasing. To meet that demand, the International Photographic Historical Organization (InPHO) was established to provide a resource center offering a wide range of free services to interested individuals and groups. Not just another camera collectors club or moderated newsgroup, InPHO is your best first source for learning about the evolution of the art, science, and technology of photography, as well as practical information on the care, acquisition, and appraisal of vintage photographica. InPHO was founded in 1985 by a group of young photohistorians as part of a cooperative effort to establish a new museum of art, science, and technology in the "Silicon Valley" of California. Although the museum plan was abandoned two years later, InPHO had already established its own charter and was operating as an independent entity. This website was initiated in 1997 to further the organization's goals and services, and, thanks to the suggestions and input of our many friends and patrons, will now continue to grow and improve. In the future you can expect to find an ever expanding selection of diverse articles on various areas of the history of photography and on collecting classic cameras, the archives of the Internet Museum of Photography, informative charts and timelines, and many links to other significant photographic web sites.

    Photography
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Redirected from Photography, History of Jump to: navigation search Photography is the process, activity and art of creating still or moving pictures by recording radiation on a radiation-sensitive medium, such as a photographic film , or electronic image sensors . Photography uses foremost radiation in the UV visible and near-IR spectrum. For common purposes the term light is used instead of radiation. Light reflected or emitted from objects form a real image on a light sensitive area ( film or plate ) or a FPA pixel array sensor by means of a pin hole or lens in a device known as a camera during a timed exposure . The result on film or plate is a latent image , subsequently developed into a visual image ( negative or diapositive ). An image on paper base is known as a print . The result on the FPA pixel array sensor is an electrical charge at each pixel which is electronically processed and stored in a computer (raster)-image file for subsequent display or processing. Photography has many uses for business, science, manufacturing (f.i. Photolithography ), art, and recreational purposes.

Albumen photographs: History, Science and Preservation. America from the Great Depression to WWII The images in the Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information Collection are among the most famous documentary photographs ever produced. Created by a group of U.S. government photographers, the images show Americans in every part of the nation. In the early years, the project emphasized rural life and the negative impact of the Great Depression, farm mechanization, and the Dust Bowl. In later years, the photographers turned their attention to the mobilization effort for World War II. The core of the collection consists of about 164,000 black-and-white photographs. This release provides access to over 112,000 of these images; future additions will expand the black-and-white offering. The FSA-OWI photographers also produced about 1600 color photographs during the latter days of the project. American Museum of Photography The American Museum of Photography is an award-winning Virtual Museum dedicated to educating, informing, and sharing great photographs with millions of Internet visitors world-wide. Exhibitions are drawn from the Museum's Collection, started by Wm. B. Becker more than 30 years ago. The Collection includes five thousand individual images, from the earliest daguerreotype portraits to the work of Ansel Adams. Each photograph has been chosen for its visual impact as well as for the importance of its content. American Photography: A Century of Images The PBS series, American Photography captures the images of a century of change and the role the camera has played both in creating and documenting it. Dramatic and intimate stories trace photography's profound effect on American life ? influencing what we buy, how we dress, how we get the news, and in matters of life and death, medicine, science and war.

    Beginnings
Photography started with a camera and the basic idea has been around since about the 5th Century B.C. For centuries these were just ideas until an Iraqi scientist developed something called the camera obscura sometime in the 11th Century. Even then, the camera did not actually record images, they simply projected them onto another surface. The images were also upside down. The first camera obscuras used a pinhole in a tent to project an image from outside the tent into the darkened area. It took until the 17th Century for camera obscuras to be made small enough to be portable and basic lenses to be added.

    • Daguerreotype
    • Emulsion Plates
Emulsion plates, or wet plates, were less expensive than Daguerreotypes and took only two or three seconds of exposure time. This made them much more suited to portrait photography, which was the most common photography at the time. These wet plates used an emulsion process called the Collodion process, rather than a simple coating on the image plate. Two of these emulsion plates were ambrotype and tintype. Ambrotypes used a glass plate instead of the copper plate of the Daguerreotypes. Tintypes used a tin plate. While these plates were much more sensitive to light, they had to be developed quickly. It was during this time that bellows were added to cameras to help with focusing.
