Quantum Mechanics
Computers The Transistor The Web ... History
Some people may believe that 20th and 21st century physics research has less of a direct impact on their daily lives than biology, chemistry, engineering, and other fields. Perhaps they think of physics as an abstract, enigmatic, or purely academic endeavor. Others think that physics only contributes to national defense and medical imaging . I created this page to dispel those myths.
Nearly everyone would agree that the computer, the transistor, and the World Wide Web are among the greatest inventions of the 20th century. Economists and laymen alike know that today's entire world economy is inextricably linked to these technologies. The daily lives of a large fraction of Earth's inhabitants would be substantially different were it not for their inventions. Most would agree that America's preeminence in computer and information technology is at least partly responsible for its status as an "economic superpower." The wealth of other nations such as Japan, Taiwan, countries in Western Europe, and others is also due, in part, to their embracement of, and contributions to, the information age.
Read below to learn these little known facts: The electronic digital computer, the transistor, the laser, and even the World Wide Web were all invented by physicists. These inventions make up the foundation of modern technology.

From the Copernican Revolution to superstrings, a chronology of more than 500 of the greatest discoveries in natural philosophy.
http://www.weburbia.com/pg/historia.htm
Physics Time-Line
From the Greek philosophers to string theorists, this is the chronology of discoveries in physics and cosmology. According to Legend, Archimedes discovered the principle of buoyancy while taking a bath. He jumped out and ran through the streets shouting "Eureka!" The scientific revolution took off 1800 years later after Gutenberg introduced the printing press in Europe and Coperincus broke the old cosmology and put humans in their place away from the centre of the universe. Since then, thousands of scientists have experienced that Eureka moment when they realised that they have seen a fundamental truth not known before. These pages contain, in chronological order, a selective list of those discoveries from natural philosophy. These are the findings which have helped us understand the laws of physics, the universe and our place in it. The time-line is not yet complete and many more scientists will have the priviledge of contributing to its future. Today the internet is taking over from print as the primary means of communicating scientific discoveries and anyone who wants to can participate.

Descriptions of important contributions to science made by 83 women in the 20th century. These are documented by the original papers in which the discoveries were first reported. In addition there are historical essays and other historical documents not easily available elsewhere. Where are 17th, 18th, and 19th century women?
Brief historical account.
Why only three quarters of the 20th century?
By the last quarter of the century there were many more women working as physicist than in earlier years, too many for this website. Each woman in this website has been carefully and thoroughly researched, and the descriptions of their work vetted by distinguished colleagues who served as Field Editors Why only 83 women?

I am one of the few contributors to this issue of Daedalus who is not in any sense a historian. I work and live in the country of physics, but history is the place that I love to visit as a tourist. Here I wish to consider, from the perspective of a physicist, the uses that history has for physics, and the dangers both pose to each other.
I should begin by observing that one of the best uses of the history of physics is to help us teach physics to nonphysicists. Although many of them are very nice people, nonphysicists are rather odd. Physicists get tremendous pleasure out of being able to calculate all sorts of things, everything from the shape of a cable in a suspension bridge suspension bridge: see bridge. to the flight of a projectile projectile
something thrown forward.

Peter A. Sturrock
- Peter Andrew Sturrock (born 1924) is an British scientist. Much of his career has been devoted to astrophysics, plasma physics , and solar physics , but Sturrock is interrested in other fields, including ufology, scientific inference and in the history of science and philosophy of science. Max Planck Institute for the History of Science - The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin was established in March 1994. Its research is primarily devoted to a theoretically oriented history of science, principally of the natural sciences, but with methodological perspectives drawn from the cognitive sciences and from cultural history. History and philosophy of science - The history and philosophy of science (HPS) is an academic discipline that encompasses the philosophy of science and the history of science. Although many scholars in the field are trained primarily as historians or philosophers, there are degree-granting departments of HPS at several prominent universities (see below). History of Science Society - The History of Science Society (HSS) is the primary professional society for the academic study of the history of science, founded in 1924 by George Sarton. They have over 3,000 members worldwide, and publish the quarterly journal Isis as well as the yearly Osiris, and have a well-attended yearly conference.

Kazoobie Kazoos
Home Blog Fun With Kazoos FAQ ... Contact The Kazoo - Its "physics", history and importance for modern music.
The text of a speech by Michael Fink of Denmark. Appearance:
A kazoo is a tube-formed, American musical instrument, with both ends of
the tube uncovered.
One end of the tube is flattened, while the other end of the tube has a
small circular opening.
Around two thirds down the instrument there is another circular hole.
This hole leads to a small chamber, where a wax-membrane is situated.
The membrane, which is fixed around the edges by a circular
cylinder-ring, is free to oscillate.
A kazoo may be made out of plastic or metal and can have all sorts of different shapes. How to play the kazoo: The whole idea behind the instrument is, that a kazoo player by singing or speaking through the instrument induces an air current which makes the membrane vibrate and thus creates a summing, "nasal" sound. By wholly or partially covering up the membrane hole a great diversity of sounds are created.
