In general parlance the terms "dove" and "pigeon" are used somewhat interchangeably. In ornithological practice, there is a tendency for "dove" to be used for smaller species and "pigeon" for larger ones, but this is in no way consistently applied, and historically the common names for these birds involve a great deal of variation between the terms "dove" and "pigeon." This family occurs worldwide, but the greatest variety is in the Indomalaya and Australasia ecozones . Young doves and pigeons are called "squabs." Young Pigeons authors get the red pen out
Davina discusses the importance of a good cover. As the grade five students of Footscray City Primary School are quickly discovering, writing is only partly about writing . With the first drafts of their stories complete, it is time they consider the wonderful and mysterious world of EDITING. To help them in their task, the effervescent Davina Bell (whose many roles include Penguin harvest magazine publisher, and generous supporter of Pigeons) made a visit to the classroom yesterday, bringing with her a huge pile of editorial goodies. From first draft to complete book, Davina left no part of the publishing process uncovered. The young Pigeons authors were given sneak peeks of upcoming titles, tips for keeping the reader immersed in the story and the chance to discuss their own ideas for illustrations and cover designs. They also had a rare opportunity to pitch their manuscript to Davina, who was suitably impressed by the depth of talent and explosion of ideas in this group of young authors.

21 Amazing Facts You Didn't Know About Pigeons
How old are pigeons?
Pigeons have lived alongside man for thousands of years with the first images of pigeons being found by archaeologists in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) and dating back to 3000 BC. It was the Sumerians in Mesopotamia that first started to breed white doves from the wild pigeon that we see in our towns and cities today and this undoubtedly accounts for the amazing variety of colors that are found in the average flock of urban pigeons. To ancient peoples a white pigeon would have seemed miraculous and this explains why the bird was widely worshipped and considered to be sacred. Throughout human history the pigeon has adopted many roles ranging from symbols of gods and goddesses through to sacrificial victims, messengers, pets, food and even war heroes!
Biblical references
The first biblical reference to the pigeon (or dove) was in the Old Testament of the Bible in the first millennium AC and was the story of Noah and the dove of peace. Later, in the New Testament, the pigeon was first mentioned during the baptism of Christ where the dove descended as the Holy Spirit, an image now used extensively in Christian art. These early biblical references have paved the way for the many different ways that the urban pigeon is viewed in modern societies worldwide. Perception of the pigeon through the centuries has changed from God to the devil and from hero to zero!

I hand-fed him until he was old enough to make it on his ownabout 4 weeks of taking a baby pigeon everywhere I went. Now he's the fastest and friendliest flier in my flock (hmmm, perhaps the most alliterative avian, also).

Some Very Basic Pigeon Facts
Pigeons mate for life and rear their broods together, although if one dies the other will take a new mate. Once the simple nest is built, the female lays an egg and then another a day or so later. The incubation period for common pigeons is 17 to 19 days. The female sits on the egg from late afternoon through the night until about 10AM. The male then takes over and does the day shift. Once the eggs hatch, both parents feed the young squabs. The first food is pigeon milk or crop milk, a cheesy substance that appears in the crops of the parents at hatching time and is fed for a week or so. Then the adults start regurgitating partially digested grains for the young. By the time the squabs are ready to fly, about 4 weeks, the father is doing most of the feeding. The squabs are fed for another week to 10 days after they are free-flying. Only a mother . . . We find that this hobby has a great appeal to those who enjoy working with animals, to those who appreciate athleticism, to those who like friendly, wholesome competition. If you find yourself in one or more of these descriptions....be careful, you may discover that the allure of these amazingly athletic birds is overpowering. You can seek out your own comfort level with the birds. If you desire a lower-key approach, with only a handful of homing pigeons for the family to enjoy, that's certainly an attractive approach for many. The spectrum also includes those who are deeply committed to racing. Races range in distance from 100 miles to 600 miles, with 300 miles being among the most popular distances.

"Pigeons are dumb.
"They poop on people's heads."
"They smell."
That's what some people say about pigeons. In fact, that's what a lot of people say about these birds. But did you ever notice that pigeons come in so many colors and feather patterns? Did you ever notice their shiny, rainbow-like neck feathers or their red feet? Did you ever notice the interesting way that pigeons coo and strut? The fact is, pigeons are special. They are special because there is such variety in the way they look. Blue Jays all look very much alike, and so do robins and cardinals. But find a flock of pigeons and you will see white ones and gray ones. You will see pigeons with blue-gray feathers and pigeons with red feathers. You will see solid-colored pigeons and speckled pigeons. Look long enough and you will be able to tell them apart, give them names, and get to know their habits. Pigeons are special because they can fly very fast. In fact, some can fly 50 miles per hour! Pigeons also have very strong "homing instincts" that help them find their way back from far away. Pigeons make great pets, too. Many people build little houses called "coops" for pigeons in their backyards or on rooftops. They let their pet pigeons fly free because, unlike canaries or parrots, pigeons will come back home.

    Pigeons
Dr. Lloyd Glenn Ingles, Cal. Academy of Sciences Pigeons are the quintessential urban bird, considered both an endearing part of city life and an aggravation. Either way, almost everyone recognizes this wild neighbor. In the Old World, these birds inhabited cliffs and rock ledges, nesting in such inaccessible places and foraging on the ground below. Imported to this continent to serve as food animals and as message carriers, some pigeons escaped captivity and found shelter in the artificial "mountain ranges" of cities. The pigeon's diet consists primarily of grains and seeds, along with insects and some greens. They aren't terribly picky though, and they'll happily accept human food scraps and leftovers when available. Pigeons live in groups called flocks, and show a strong affinity for human-built structures. A courting male pursues his intended mate on the ground, circling her with neck feathers inflated and tail spread, bowing and cooing all the while. Pigeons mate for life, but if one partner dies, the survivor generally will attempt to find another mate. Pigeons breed throughout the year, even during winter, and can raise four or five broods annually. Haphazard nests of twigs, leaves, and a few feathers are built on window ledges, behind signs, and under bridges.

Photo Gallery General Pigeon Facts Pigeons, also known as rock doves, are very common birds found all over the world. Pigeon feathers are typically gray, but can range anywhere from white to tan to black. Pigeon feet are often red and their rumps white. When they lift their 13 ounces off the ground to fly, a clicking sound can be heard, which is the touching of their wing tips. Pigeon wings can beat about 10 times per second. Pigeons were originally domesticated birds, but have since become feral, and are now the most common bird pest known to humans.
