Griffonpoint
Dedicated to the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Pigeons I like to use Recall birds and Homing Pigeons in training our Griffons for hunting. They are not as good as using wild birds, but what you loose, you gain in the ability to use controlled situations in training. Pigeons are easy to keep, even if you live in the city you will be able to use pigeons.
Pigeon Facts
The earliest record of man keeping domestic Pigeons is 3000 BC Egypt. Pigeons are strong fliers and have been widely used as emergency carriers at many times in our history as they will instinctively return to their place of birth. It is this ability to fly and the instinct to return to the coop that we draw upon when we use Pigeons for the training of a hunting Griffon. Pigeons and Doves are monogamous, they mate for life, but on the death of a mate, they will re-mate in time. During courting, including head-bobbing, cooing

Management of Invasive Species Species Accounts
Pigeons
Robbins (1995) stated that the single, most serious pest bird in the United States is the common pigeon, an invasive species. Pigeons have been reported as being responsible for damages in every state and territory except the Virgin Islands. Pigeons cause damage to property and agriculture, and are a threat to human health and safety. Pigeons are a reservoir and vector for more than 50 human and livestock diseases including ornithosis, histoplasmosis, and encephalitis (Weber 1979, Long 1981). Haag-Wackernagel (1995) estimated that management costs associated with pigeon control are $9 per bird per year. Invasive pigeon damages reported to WS ranged from $198,209 to $6,412,725 with an average of $1,590,730 and a median of $804,481 per year. The total damage attributable to invasive pigeons represented 1.1% and 0.1%, respectively of the amount of yearly damages ($1.1 billion) estimated by Pimental et al. Iranian Pigeons for Sale
My name is Pejman, I was born in northern Iran and I spent most of my summer holidays on my parent’s farm. I have always been interested in animals of all shapes and sizes, especially birds. As a child I used to keep pigeons and my favourites were Kaftar Rang , [coloured pigeons]. I have been in the UK since 1977 and about 2 years ago became reacquainted with Kaftar Irani . I have at present around 120 birds, they mainly consist of colours Sorour and Toghi and only a few others such as Kaftar Tehrani Goli Kaleh Brenjee and Dom-Siah I bought my initial stock through the internet and from reputable Iranian pigeon dealers and keepers. I have met some very interesting people, of which some have become good friends. I am a director of my own catering company and I keep pigeons ONLY as a HOBBY. As you can imagine from time to time the numbers get out of hand and hence the need to sell surplus stock and that is the reason for this website. Please browse through the pages, if you like any of the breeding pairs then contact me and I will email you the pictures and details of their young.

30. Passenger Pigeons
Describes their breeding, and how they were hunted to extinction.
http://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/expeditions/treasure_fossil/Treasures/Passenger_

Passenger Pigeons lived in the eastern United States from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, breeding in their northern habitats and wintering in the southern part of their range. They migrated across this range in numbers so huge that their flocks darkened the sky. A writer once described a migrating flock of the pigeons as "a column, eight or ten miles in length . . . resembling the windings of a vast and majestic river." In 1808 a single flock in Kentucky was estimated to contain over 2 billion birds. Today, in a stunning example of the human potential for destruction, the Passenger Pigeon is extinct. During the years of westward expansion, enormous numbers of eastern chestnut and oak trees, the main source of food for the Passenger Pigeon, were cleared to make way for farms, homesteads, and towns. Moreover, the birds were believed to be a menace to crops, while they seemed to be an inexhaustible supply of food for both people and their pigs. With the extension of the railroad in the 1850s, the pigeons could be easily shipped to city markets, increasing the numbers in which they were hunted. The combination of all these factors wiped out the Passenger Pigeon. The last one, which lived in the Cincinnati Zoological Garden, died on September 1, 1914. This exhibit was created with specimens from the Museum's collection. Like the

Origins: Pigeons and doves have been around for a long time—long before humans. Rock Doves are thought to have originated in southern Asia several million years ago. Compare this to modern humans that first appeared about 120,000 years ago. Size and weight: A pigeon is about 13 inches (32 cm) in length from bill to tail and weighs a little less than a pound (0.35 kg). Males are slightly bigger than females. A pigeon family

These nuisance birds were introduced to the United States as pets but quickly adapted to our environment and have continued to flourish in numbers, becoming a pest of business, airports, historical landmarks, schools, stadiums any place where adequate food and shelter is available. Pigeons primarily feed on grains with some occasional fruit in their diet. This basic diet has changed as the birds learned to live in our neighborhoods and cities. It is not uncommon to see flocks of pigeons walking through the parking lots of shopping centers and fast-food restaurants, looking for handouts or scraps of food dropped by humans. Pigeons are birds that live in communal flocks. These flocks generally feed, loaf and roost together, enjoying the company of their companions. These birds usually mate for life. Pigeons have a life span of up to 10 or 15 years in the wild but in urban areas they may only live for about 5 years. Most pigeon problems occur where the birds are loafing or feeding. It is in these areas that you generally need to use nuisance bird control products.

Pigeons
Last Updated: 02/18/03 Common pigeons or Rock Dove were introduced into the US from Europe as domesticated birds that escaped and formed wild populations. Pigeons can be found near parks, city buildings, feed mills, grain elevators, residential neighborhoods, and other areas that provide roosting, nesting or feeding sites.
How Do I Know if I Have Pigeons?
Typically, the birds have gray bodies with a whitish rump, two black bars on the secondary wing feathers, a broad black band on the tail and red feet. Body color can vary greatly, ranging from gray to white, tan and blackish. The average weight is 13 ounces and the average length is 11 inches. Nests are made out of sticks, twigs and grasses clumped together to form a crude platform. Damage
Pigeon feces deposited on cars, statues, park benches, and buildings is not only unsightly, but also accelerates deterioration especially to buildings. Pigeon nests may clog drain pipes, interfere with awnings, and make fire escapes unsafe. Pigeons are infested with many external parasites including mites, fleas, ticks, and bugs many of which will readily bite people. These parasites frequently will invade homes from pigeon nests located in or on the building. Pigeons are the carriers of diseases such as salmonella and others that affect humans and domestic animals alike.

BASIC PIGEON INFORMATION by Frank Mosca PURPOSE OF THIS PAGE I don't intend to get too technical in any of these articles, but I'd like to make sure we're all starting from some sort of common ground. If any of this is too basic for you, skip it and forgive me. It may not be so basic for someone else. The bird we're discussing is the domestic pigeon, ( Columba livia , which has been bred for various purposes for three thousand years or more. It's descended from a cliff dwelling Eurasian species (the rock dove or rock pigeon) with many close relatives, the closest of which is likely the stock dove ( Columba oenas .Various forms of the domestic pigeon exist. Some are bred for their flying abilities. These include tumbling or rolling (somersaulting in the air), diving (coming down from extreme heights at high rates of speed and this diving may or may not be combined with aerobatic maneuvers); and homing (returning at sustained speeds of 45-50 mph to the home loft from distances up to 600 miles). Others are bred for their voice (Trumpeters and Laughers), their great beauty, their feather ornaments or uniqueness. The Fantail, Jacobin, Wing Pigeons and Swallows, as well as the various Color Pigeons stand not only as testaments to the breeder's art, but also as full-fledged contributions to humanity's love of beauty. (Check your local library for: The Encyclopedia of Pigeon Breeds by Wendell Levi or Fancy Pigeons While all domestic pigeons are edible, most of today's show forms are seldom bred for food. However, pigeons are still bred for the table and such birds (Squabbing Pigeons) are normally much bigger than most show or flying breeds. These birds are bred for rapidity of production and size of dressed squab. The largest domestic breed, the Runt or Roman pigeon may reach weights of up to 3-5 lb. (1.5-2.25 kg) and have a three foot (1 meter) wing span. In the U.S., though, it is seldom bred in its pure state for squabbing purposes. It has become more a show bird. The most common squabbing breeds are the Texan, an auto-sexed breed,( i.e., a breed in which sex can be determined at hatched because of the different colors of the cock and hen as a result of the action of
