      Pigeons
Since coming to North America, the pigeon escaped and formed feral populations, which have resulted today in pigeons being the number one pest bird in urban and rural areas across the United States.
How to Get Rid of Pigeons: Prevent Pigeon Damage
Pigeons are notorious for causing significant damage to buildings, vehicles, property and machinery with their excessive droppings. Not only do pigeon droppings cause odor and aesthetic problems in public places, droppings can also increase the rate of building destruction. Droppings can even damage and kill vegetation in farmlands. Pigeon feathers have also been known to plug and damage ventilation units, which can sometimes contribute to health problems. The cleanup of pigeon droppings and associated damage repair tends to cause significant economic losses. It is important to implement cleanup and repair on a regular basis in order to maintain safe environments for workers and safe home environments for your family. For professional pigeon dropping, feather cleanup and control services, call a Critter Control office near you.

PIGEONS Pigeons are amazing. They are all over the world. Whenever I see them on my travels to different cities here and abroad, I marvel at their ubiquity. They are in Tokyo and New York, in London and Rome, in Beijing and Lisbon, in Stockholm and Auckland, in Houston, Texas, and Savannah, Georgia. Name any city in the world, East and West, from north to south; you find pigeons. And they look the same everywhere; I'm sure they do even in places where I have never visited and witnessed with my own eyes. There are no doubt different species of pigeons. I read that there are about 290 species in the family Columbidae and that the pigeon I am familiar with is the street or domestic pigeon, Columba livia , also known as rock dove. This is the species that populate the world's towns and cities and villages, and to my eyes there are no regional variations. Cats are everywhere in the world, too. But the domestic cat, Felis catus , though relatively uniform in size and shape compared with the canine, shows some variations owing to ancestry and breed. In my first years in America, I found tabbies and calicos oddly long-torsoed. They looked peculiar, especially when they sat up with their front legs upright and produced a prominent hump on the back. Then, I recalled that Japanese cats are characteristically short-torsoed; the cats I had in Japan were short, too, perhaps with shorter legs as well. Later, when I saw carved Egyptian cats, they showed the same hump in seated profile. This made sense; I learned that the European cat descended from the African wildcat

Pigeons
Introduction
The existence of wildlife in urban areas enriches our environment, bringing a little bit of nature to the bustle of the city. Abundant food and shelter and the absence of natural predators have allowed many wild creatures to successfully adapt to urban life. Although human-wildlife conflicts may occur, understanding the characteristics and needs of animals and birds can help us take a humane approach leading to a peaceful coexistence. Humane treatment of animals involves compassion, excludes cruelty and avoids pain, suffering or injury. If there is ample food and a place to live, removing the resident animals or birds will just create a vacant territory for more to move into. In the long term, preventive measures are generally less costly and less stressful for both wildlife and the home or building owner than attempting removal or other unacceptable methods. The first pigeons, or Rock Doves, were brought to North America by European settlers and are now found throughout the United States, southern Canada and Mexico. Pigeons have long been used to deliver messages, particularly during World War I and II. Scientists are baffled by their uncanny ability to find their way home over hundreds of miles.

Identification
Pigeons ( Columba livia ) typically have a gray body with a whitish rump, two black bars on the secondary wing feathers, a broad black band on the tail, and red feet (Fig. 1). Body color can vary from gray to white, tan, and black. The average weight is 13 ounces (369 g) and the average length is 11 inches (28 cm). When pigeons take off, their wing tips touch, making a characteristic clicking sound. When they glide, their wings are raised at an angle.
Range
Pigeons are found throughout the United States (including Hawaii), southern Canada, and Mexico.
Habitat
Pigeons are highly dependent on humans to provide them with food and sites for roosting, loafing, and nesting. They are commonly found around farm yards, grain elevators, feed mills, parks, city buildings, bridges, and other structures.
Food Habits
Pigeons are primarily grain and seed eaters and will subsist on spilled or improperly stored grain. They also will feed on garbage, livestock manure, insects, or other food materials provided for them intentionally or unintentionally by people. In fact, in some urban areas the feeding of pigeons is considered a form of recreation. They require about 1 ounce (30 ml) of water daily. They rely mostly on free-stand-ing water but they can also use snow to obtain water.

    Pigeons
Pigeons can breed throughout the year, peaking between March and July. Young pigeons become independent after around five weeks and up to about 18 can be reared during a year. Pigeons have become a pest, fouling buildings and pavements where they nest or roost. Pigeon fouling is not only unsightly but also its acid content may be destructive, eroding stonework. Nest droppings and feathers can block gutters, rainwater and down-pipes and cause potential slipping hazards on pavements, ladders and fire escapes. Pigeons are also a source of substances which cause allergies. These can cause respiratory ailments like pigeon fancier's lung and allergic skin reactions. The one overriding factor that controls city pigeon populations is the supply of food, and people provide the most important source of food for pigeons in the city. The growth in food outlets that has occurred since the 1960s, particularly those of the 'fast food' variety, means that more people are on the move and eating outdoors than ever before. Many of these people, whether deliberately or accidentally, drop food in the streets and open spaces. Without this food supply, the pigeon population would be far smaller and, arguably, healthier.

Pigeon Control
Pigeons in our Environment

Most of the pigeons you see around a city, or any building, bridge or structure, are pigeons that were born and raised close by. A few may be "vagrants" and constantly on the move, but most of them are your neighbors. Pigeons might properly be called "rock doves," indeed, that's the natural place for them to be, in small rocky outcroppings. It's just that man's many artificial structures offer so many excellent nesting areas.
Pigeons are also used to people, who tend to feed them, contributing to their increased populations. Pigeons can subsist on just about any kind of diet, and will crowd out songbirds that feed near them. Pigeons are strictly diurnal, daytime animals, and they seek out a safe place to roost every night, and will only fly at night when disturbed.
In a local population of pigeons, there will be a few dominant birds, usually the breeding males, followed by the local population of fertile females, juveniles and mated pairs. The dominant birds are alphas, all the rest are omegas, and each breeding male can control many omegas, depending on the other resident populations. The dominant males come and go, sometimes staying in the area. The juveniles, if they survive a winter or two, become breeding males, or females, in their own territory, which can be yards or miles away from where they were born.

Email: Preferred Format: Text HTML First Name: unless otherwise noted. Racing Pigeons Racing pigeonsmore accurately described as racing doves are, in fact, one of man's oldest feathered companions. Pigeons date to antiquity! Far from being a lowly servant, the racing pigeon was the special prerogative of kings, princes, and nobles of all kinds. During these past times it was contrary to law for a common man to own pigeons. The great empires of Carthage, Egypt, and Rome made full use of them in many ways including the production of squabs (a great delicacy) as well as high-grade nitrogen (droppings) for their fields. The aforementioned civilizations also used pigeons in a great network of advanced communication. They kept emperors in touch with the most remote areas of their lands during a time when horse and riders or caravans would have taken weeks to deliver the same information. Caesar made formidable use of them during his conquest of Gaul. It is now extremely difficult to imagine that our feathered companions were at one time the ultimate communication tool used in the greatest of all communication networks! It is further difficult to comprehend that these little warriors of the airways made possible both great empires as well as great fortunes. As already mentioned the Egyptians and Persians trained rock doves to carry messages. They were an exceptionally reliable method of communication hitherto unheard of. As these empires spread across the then known civilized world capturing country after country they discovered that these other countries had also trained rock doves. These countries included China, Greece, Italy as well as India. Among these many countries China had in fact organized a postal system based upon the use of messenger pigeons. Knowledge is power, and at one time the surest and swiftest way to deliver this knowledge was with racing pigeons.
